This has floored me.

He was an icon to 80s kids in Australia and became a warm and regular voice in living rooms across the world. One of the most enthusiastic and personable ex players. Always engaging, giving advice and answering fan questions on social media. Last ever post was just 15 hours ago...

RIP Deano.

Loved his flamboyance and natural talent, gutted.

Invented fast running between the wickets, incredible fielder but supreme batsmen.

R.I.P. Dean Jones.

Sad day for all who love cricket.

Was lucky to watch him on the tv for a few years before he retired, He really was ahead of his time as a ODI batsman with his stroke play and aggressive running between the wickets turning 1's into 2's and 2's into 3's.

I recommend checking out an Interview he did for Mark Howards podcast, really shines a light on how he became the cricketer and person that he did.

My favourite of Howies interviews

Best Australian ODI batsman of the Benson and Hedges WSC era.
Drew me into the ODI game as a kid with his timing, flair and speed.
As others have said, his 145 against England stands so vividly in my memory, ahead of his time.

The first innings I watched of Dean was as a 7 year old at my grandparents house, in early 1985.
Australia smashed a record 2-323 against Sri Lanka in an ODI at Adelaide, I remember Border and Jones seemed to bat forever.
Jones ended the innings on 99*, Australia won by a then record 200+ runs and I was hooked.

As a young boy, there are sportsmen who can mould your childhood.
For me, in the then VFL, it was Michael Roach.
In Cricket, it was Dean Jones.

An entire generation of cricket lovers now in their 40s, thank you Dean, for providing such entertaining innings throughout our childhoods.

Athers noting how Border was pushing Jones to get back out there in Madras and that he maybe shouldn't have done it made me realise that, for better or worse, we'll never see an innings like that again. Today the medical team would take charge and Jones would have been prevented from going back out to bat. For the health of the players it's the right thing to do but it's also going to deny us from ever seeing these legendary acts of mental strength and toughness.

RIP Deano.
