RIP Dean Jones

Shocking news :(

Like everyone else said, condolences to his family and friends. Sad day for all the fans of world cricket.

He was one of my favourite players. I was a teenager when he was at the peak of his career.

One Christmas I got dean jones’ book and apparently when mum got it at the book shop Deano and merv were doing a signing, so she lined up and got merv to sign it as she knew him as a cricketer and then Went to walk off before deano signed it.

Deano “do you want me to sign as well”
Mum “ are you a cricketer?”
Deano “yes, my pictures on the front and back of the book”
Mum “oh, ok then”

Apparently both merv and deano pissed themselves laughing.

Yeah dang, really advanced the One Day game, used his feet to the quicks and had a booty-belting sweep shot. Really enjoyed watching him in ye olde canary colour days, he was in fact the only reason to watch in a line up with crawling slugs like taylor, marsh, etc. RIP DJ.

Best Australian ODI batsman of the Benson and Hedges WSC era.
Drew me into the ODI game as a kid with his timing, flair and speed.
As others have said, his 145 against England stands so vividly in my memory, ahead of his time.

The first innings I watched of Dean was as a 7 year old at my grandparents house, in early 1985.
Australia smashed a record 2-323 against Sri Lanka in an ODI at Adelaide, I remember Border and Jones seemed to bat forever.
Jones ended the innings on 99*, Australia won by a then record 200+ runs and I was hooked.

As a young boy, there are sportsmen who can mould your childhood.
For me, in the then VFL, it was Michael Roach.
In Cricket, it was Dean Jones.

An entire generation of cricket lovers now in their 40s, thank you Dean, for providing such entertaining innings throughout our childhoods.

Good stuff. My sentiments exactly. I can remember where I was when Deano scored that 145.

Canary yellow ? It’s Australian gold my friend and don’t you effing forget it, canary yellow indeed !

Shocked and saddened like everyone else here.

He revolutionised ODIs with his ability to hit to all areas of the ground, running between wickets and wearing the wraparound sunnies.

He was the first player to wear sunnies in a game here, the commentators thought he was a flog at the time, but now every player wears sunnies.

He was ahead of his time.

#putyoursunniesoutfordeano

Let's get it trending.

Terrible news, loved watching him bat in both Test and One Dayer's

John Howard congratulating Deano for inventing cricket sunnies, one of the great moments in cricket.

Thoughts should also be going to Brett Lee right now who apparently gave Deano CPR after he collapsed. Can’t even imagine what he would be going through right now

He was a flawed human being, but while being so flawed, he managed to become a very good cricketer, especially in the ODI format wherein his fielding came into its own.

His 210 at Chennai signified courage, in its purest human form. Dante speaks of his circles of hell, but I would say that Jones went through a few circles of his own personalised hell in those conditions, both mentally and physically. To re-enter from those circles, as he did, denotes willpower that's scarcely been seen in Australian cricket.

The worst part is that he wasn't even 60. No-one deserves to die at that age. To the posters here, take time to appreciate your loved ones, for tomorrow they could be gone.

RIP Deano.

The Australia Day Massacre

Zinc on the lips. Deano was a trailblazer in so many ways. ******* huge loss to cricket!
1st guy i saw bowl in sunnies

The jones boy was second only to viv richards as most watchable exciting cricketer in that period ..they had that swagger very few have and perform on the big stage ... he played the game like a slick confident footballer ,always on the move either with bat in hand or as exceptional fielder.....victorian crowds would cheer out his name all day at the MCG for years after he was dropped demanding him back in the side ....that has never happened again in australian cricket.
RIP champ

Vale Deano.
Was no BS.
A swashbuckler
Not afraid to voice his opinion.
Australia's greatest ODI player.
Tough as nails.
Great batsman.
Amazing fielder and arm.
Wasn't afraid to roll his arm over.
VICTORIAN cricket legend
Cricket icon of Australia.

I grew up Dean Jones number 1, Slater 2, Gilchrist 3 as my favourite ball hitters. Jones was the one, i remembered was prepared to take the game on by using his feet. He danced down the wicket like not many Australian batsman did in that era. i only watched a bit of his cricket when he was coming to the end of his career. I watch alot of cricket but would have liked to see and willl endeavour to source out a few videos, of him playing before 1990.

He was a player that was a bit beyond my time.

just read the news. Awful :(

As a lil kid i used to put the zinc cream on the lips and dance down the pitch and swing for 6 every ball cos of Dean Jones.
