RIP Drew Morphett

One of my favourite commentators growing up through the 90s.

Didnt want to be bigger than the game. He loved it and everyone loved the way he called games.

Someone on twitter said have you ever heard a bad word said about Drew Morphett? Nope!

Shocked. An awesome caller who made sure the game was bigger than him. It saddens me to think that these informative and balanced commentators were retired before they were ready because of the emphasis on colour in the commentary teams. Broadcasters have really misjudged the lay of the land and it will take a long time to get it back again.

RIP Drew.

Memorable commentary of Drew's that I remember:

"Three kicks...three goals!!"

"In the vicinity...magnificent!!"

Morphett's expressive "Magnificent!" was right up there with McAvaney's "Special!" as far as commentary catch phrases you'd love to hear.

His excitement seemed so genuine. As a kid, he was a big part of what made it fun and interesting to watch the game.

Sad news especially growing up to love the game and hearing those familiar voices. He was certainly one of the best going around. And of course last week there was Harry Beitzel who passed away, both from around the same era.

Top of the tree with Dennis IMO, very sad loss, his work on the winners back in the day was brilliant, a huge part of the footy season and Sunday evenings as a young fella. RIP mate.

These days, not many death notices shock or surprise me, because I've become so immune to them, but this one not so.

This one deeply saddens me. He was the voice of football for me growing up, and have watched a lot of the Winners reboots on Foxtel over the past couple of years to remind me of what a fantastic bloke he was and what a great game caller he was.

I just wish the idiots on TV today calling the games were like this bloke!!!

RIP Drew Morphett. I'm very sad today.

RIP Drew.

For me this is where it sits. What made Drew so good is accepting that sometimes you are going to have to call some absolute shit and that's sport. No need to manufacture drama, simply get across what is happening and let your passion carry the call.

He was a bubbly, optimistic, professional broadcaster. A giant of the industry.

sad to hear this

Reminds me off the Saturday replays and the look away if you don't want to know the score days

A class act RIP
Oh yeah!!

"If you dont want to know the score.. look away now" and you have to peek [emoji41][emoji41]

I remember peeking for carl v wce 1995 or 96 that tony evans non goal toe poke given a goal to carlton. We lost by a point. I was shattered blaming myself for peeking [emoji28][emoji28][emoji28]

Very sad news - he was a fantastic commentator - The Winners was compulsory viewing when I was young.

Coodabeen Champions reminiscing about Drew - he sounded like a top bloke as well. R.I.P.

Deeply saddened by this news. I remember listening to him on 3LO early days and hosting the VFL replays in Saturday night.

Was a true sports broadcaster. Balanced in his commentary, without the rubbish that today's broadcasters brings.

Will be sadly missed.

RIP

Great commentator, loved his work on the abc in heady days for that station with a wealth of classy broadcasters in their stable.

Sydney lad, loved his rugby I remember but also had a passion for the World's game(aussie rules).

R.I.P.

Ah bugger. What a shame.

He was a fine cricket commentator too.

Very knowledgeable and had a genuine love of sport that came through in his calling.

Some of the boofhead ex-players calling the game these days could take a leaf out of his book.

He will be missed.
