Sunday nights... fish and chips all over the shag pile carpet in the lounge room. The spilt lemonade and squeezed lemon stinging your cuts. Good long term family friends... and the winners on the telly.

The late 70s seem like an eternity ago now. Life moves so fast.

Thanks for your contribution Drew, i can still hear your voice.

Being a Hawks supporter in the 80's he was a huge part of my childhood.

A classy professional who never pushed himself forward, never had an ego. Modern media performers could learn a lot from Drew.

Condolences to family and friends.

This. His enthusiasm brought you into the game. There was something about him that was humanising - whether it was a sly sense of humour or the real love he had for sport I'm not sure. But he was able to feel like a person of the people but still be a total pro which is an incredibly hard balancing act. He was very good at what he did and 69 is too young to die. Still sort of poetic that he died watching the footy - something he loved.
One thing I always remember from his commentary is an appreciation for sublime. I think it was 2007 QF, he was calling for ABC and Geelong had just annihilated North by 100 points. He spoke as if he had witnessed something very special - great team playing at their sublime best.

Earlier this year McDonald-Tipungwuti kicked a brilliant goal against Port and then we were subjected to Ling criticising the Port player. Too many commentators focus on the negative.

Can't believe the news. I heard Drew calling the Eagles v GWS game last week and thought it was soo good to hear him calling football again......then this s sad news

Sunday nights on the ABC back then there was two must watch tv shows The Winners and Countdown, was always a battle to watch them though.

Bloody parents wanted to watch boring shit like 60 Minutes.

Terrible news. He was on The Footy Show recently and looked great. It's also so difficult to see many people passing who were born the same year my father. Difficult to deal with.

RIP Drew.

Grew up in Kalgoorlie and watched The Winners back in the 80's with the old man on a Sunday night after rushing home from the local footy. It's the earliest memories I have for the VFL.

Fond memories of Morphett and that show.

RIP

As a younger bloke I mainly rember him from listening to the cricket, it was never the same once he left. And from the new version of the Winners, loved watching this with my old man, hopefully Fox will replay these.

RIP you absolute legend

I grew up watching football and cricket with the TV muted and the wireless on. I can honestly say that I wouldn't love sport half as much if it wasn't for the ABC and real commentary that broadens your appreciation for the game.

One feels for those who won't have the well funded Grandstand to rely upon in the future. It was an absolute shame when they cut Morphett. Grandstand cricket has sorely missed him.

It's just so sad. It's disheartening losing all of these talented people. In my experience, brilliance is often inseparable from darkness. Two sides of the same coin. You'll be missed Drew.

Bugger. I'm in the Amazonian region of Peru atm. Woken by a text from my bro that Drew Morphett had passed. Can't get back to sleep. Too young at 69. Was a big part of watching football for a time. I remember going out for a birthday dinner with my girlfriend about 20 years ago and Drew was sitting on the table next to me. With his distinct voice, felt like he was commentating on the eating of my meal. Life is short. Condolences to family. RIP.

I'm not usually very moved by celebrity deaths but Drew Morphett's death has a bit of meaning for me. He seemed like such a decent bloke and he was thoroughly knowledgable and professional too. Also, in QLD, growing up in the late 70's/early 80's he was really a little glimpse into footy world for me. We didn't much footy on the t.v, still don't really. It was really just the Saturday 2pm game and Winners back then (there was one local QLD footy show). Winners was where we saw all the other clubs and suburban grounds that hardly ever got featured in the game of the day. I always listened to "if you don't want to know the score look away now' and wondered about the places where there was even more footy on t.v!

He, his wife and family deserved a longer retirement than he got and that's always sad. Thanks for the memories Drew!

Channel 7 tribute tonight was lame and not enough. I`m glad i dont work with those sharks.

Came online to post the same thing.

Gives them 11 years of his life and thats the best they can dish up?
Afterall its not like they havent had a lot of time to prepare

Very sad news.
Drew was a class act and set a high standard that many modern commentators fail to reach. He realised that sport was about the competitors, not the commentators, something that BT, Brayshaw and the boys club need to learn.

What stood out about Drew was that he knew his stuff. No matter what he was commentating, he did his homework and offered unbiased, informative, passionate commentary that described not only what was happening but why.

Condolences to family and friends, he will be greatly missed.
