Although it is a bit of a wank, they all make sense bar Dogs v Saints and Cats v Dees.
The latter I suppose they will sell as 2 cities however I dont think the Dees represent Melbourne as a whole.
Apart from 1 flag each for the dogs and saints I cant think of anything historical that would suggest a rivalry between them.

Apologies - Just noted there is a similar thread below.

Read the history books

Melbourne and Geeelong is the oldest rivalry !

there is no 'rivalry' between saints & dogs, or dees & cats....

If anything a better mix would have been saints v cats, because there has been a modern rivalry between these two clubs since the last round of 2003...

But before that Cats main rival was West Coast, and 5 years before that it was Hawthorn. It's all stupid.

How I solved rivalry round:

Geelong v St Kilda - 'Battle of the Bay' has been simmering since at least 2003
Collingwood v Brisbane - A modern one, but shaping as a beauty.
Melbourne v Hawthorn - Merger, anyone?
Essendon v W Bulldogs - Battle of the western suburbs.
Richmond v Carlton - Two great rivals of years gone by.
Sydney v Kangaroos - Still some genuine feeling there after North's attempts to win the Sydney market. 'North v South' had some feeling in the VFL.
Adelaide v Port Adelaide - Obvious.
West Coast v Fremantle - Obvious.

Alternatives:
- Collingwood-Essendon is already taken by the Anzac Day fiesta, which is a shame because Brisbane-W Bulldogs has been known to have some spice.
- Keep Sydney vs Brisbane & make it Kangaroos v Bulldogs 'battle of the battlers'.

I wouldn't mind seeing the AFL cultivate some interstate rivalries:
- Sydney v West Coast, Collingwood v Brisbane, Sydney v St Kilda, Essendon v Fremantle, Essendon v West Coast and Port v Collingwood could all qualify as potential rivalry round matches.

Wait didn't we have a rivalry against Richmond a couple of years ago? How many other rivalries do we have that I don't know about?

How bout' this.
Adelaide vs Port
West Coast vs Freo
Brisbane vs Sydney
Collingwood vs Richmond
Essendon vs Carlton
North Melbourne vs Hawthorn
Western Bulldogs vs Geelong
Melbourne vs St.Kilda

.. How many other rivalries do we have that I don't know about?
Adelaide - restricted to prelims, though
Melbourne - supporters' identical socio-economic backgrounds
St Kilda - Sedat knows
Essendon - the battle for the Maribyrnong
Richmond - how many coaches, defecting stars and dobbers do you need ?
West Coast - the battle of the "westies"
Sydney - We've never forgiven the old South Melbourne for Hughie McLachlan and Bottles Greenwood
Fremantle - the battle of the bightly coloured jumpers
North Melbourne - they've never forgiven us for beating them into the VFL by 5 minutes
Hawthorn - see North
Brisbane Lions/Fitzroy - let nobody forget 1989
Collingwood - why not, everyone else has them
Port Adelaide - does Chris Grant and $0.20 ring a bell ?
Carlton - who's looking tragic these days ?
Geelong - Ted never played in a winning side at Geelong

The only true rivalry is Collingwood v Carlton, and that isn't even in the feature.

I would consider any of Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, Brisbane, Richmond or Port Adelaide our rivals in that order.

As a Collingwood supporter I don't really see anyone being our rivals other than Carlton, Richmond and Essendon. For a rivalry to truly exist I think there has got to be a lot of history about it.

The rivalry we had against Brisbane is losing momentum as both teams are no longer powerhouses. As will the Sydney Vs West Coast rivalry,

Have thought about this a little more...am trying to find the best balance for next year...

Friday 3rd April, 2009
Geelong v St Kilda, MCG (n) - 60,000

Saturday 4th April
Collingwood v Carlton, MCG - 85,000
W Bulldogs v Kangaroos, TD - 35,000
West Coast v Fremantle, Subiaco (n) - 40,000
Sydney v Brisbane, ANZ Stadium (n) - 60,000

Saturday 5th April
Richmond v Essendon, MCG - 75,000
Adelaide v Port Adelaide, AAMI Stadium - 45,000
Hawthorn v Melbourne, TD (twilight) - 40,000

Total crowd aggregate: 440,000 - I don't think those crowd totals are too optimistic, either. Sydney pulled in over 60,000 for all of their ANZ Stadium matches last year and if the right publicity went into it, they could do it here, surely. Likewise, Coll-Carl may not get 85,000, but Ess-Rich could get up to 80,000. Geelong-St Kilda could be anything if they have big 2008 seasons and start 2009 strongly.

Even then, the existing record is 368,000. Surely the above round would break that record.

Now, with Gillon McLaughlin obsessed with breaking the AFL total crowd/broadcast figures record, wouldn't he want a rivalry round that actually worked?

Whilst not 'massive' rivalries, there's definitely feeling between Geelong and St Kilda, and that will only be enhanced this year. The Kangaroos-Dogs is perhaps the weakest, but there's no reason it couldn't be promoted as a genuine 'blue-collar' clash.

Be interested on your thoughts guys on how my model could be improved...
