Rohan being used in the forward line a lot has been a consistent theme during pre season. I don't have a major issue with this but it seems to almost be as a semi key forward role?

After Goodes retires Rohan will probably be our most versatile player imo, so I think it would be good for him to play a variety of roles this season rather than playing the majority of game time deep in the forward line. His speed is one of his main weapons and I'd like to see more of him running out of the midfield and streaming into the forward line, rather than being the end product in the forward line.

Only early days, so we'll see how it unfolds I guess.

Re: Rohan has a forward?

He'll be used mainly as a defensive forward, but one with a potency to kick bags of goals too. They're aiming to use his pace and ability and desire to tackle effectively to put pressure on the opposition coming out of their defensive 50, an area I think the stats show we've been relatively poor in in recent years.

Secondly, his defensive positioning is poor, he's been caught on the wrong side of the player more than a few times, seeming to suggest he doesn't have a natural feel for playing as a backman. In addition, there are more open spots in the forwards than in the backs.

However, there is no reason why he can't have a licence to roam all the way back down into the defensive half, something that ROK used to do in his old half-forward role that he so successfully held down during the premiership year and the seasons either side of that.

Re: Rohan has a forward?

So I guess that means McGlynn will continue in his midfielder role and Parker will probably move into the midfield more as well?

I realise that with the rotations they have in the current era they'll all move around a fair bit and will still play in the forward line at times but I'll assume McGlynn/Parker are being groomed as mids more than forwards going into 2012.

We have a lot of players who can play the forward/mid role, which is a good thing. Goodes, Rohan, McVeigh, O'Keefe, Parker, McGlynn etc. Nice balance.

English ******, do you speak it?

;)

On a more serious note, I'd rather him play the 3rd forward role this year before making a full time move into the midfield.

When he returned from injury last year I thought forward was the only logical place for him to play given his lack of match fitness etc. Now that he is fully fit after a full preseason I still think forward is the position in which he will have the most value for us but I think he ought to be given runs further up field from time to time in order to further build his experience and awareness.

All in all, I like him being used as a forward for the majority of the game. We need to build a forward line around Reid with competent goal-kickers and Rohan is definitely one of those players. I can't think of too many defenders who would want to be one out deep in the forward line with a player of Rohan's pace, skills and size. Add to that his tackling ability and he is a potent force in the forward 50.

On McGlynn, in Longmire's press conference he said McGlynn would be playing more in the middle this year but will definitely play some parts of games up forward. Parker I think will probably play more up forward than in the middle at this stage on the other hand.

McGylnn should be our primary tagger in the midfield this year, however we can leave the bigger jobs (Judd, Murphy, Griffen, etc.) to Shaw.
