waiting with interest on this story as well...

As an aside, whilst we wait, how would you compare them as players?

Roo obviously has proven himself over a longer period of time.. but Hodge to me is a bit like Alan Border.. if I had to pick someone to play for my life he'd be one of the first I'd consider. Has probably done more in big games (aka finals/grand finals) than Roo did.

It was a while ago when a bunch of the MMM guys went on a cross state bus trip doing clinics, sportmans nights, drinking, punting etc. From memory it was Brian Taylor, Danny Frawley, Roo, Nathan Brown, Hodge, Roughead, Jordan Lewis and a few other current players.

They are all good friends, and one night after winning the quaddie, they were out celebrating and Hodge and Roughead were teasing Nathan Brown for wearing a denim jacket with jeans, calling him Double Denim. This then progressed to them teasing Roo about a flannelette shirt that was 4 sizes too small for him. Brown and Hodge decided to team up to try and fight Roo, but just as there about to 'attack', Brown backed out and left Hodge to get sat on his arse and escorted out.

Roughead, blind drunk and oblivious to all this walked in and started teasing Roo about his shirt, to which Roo put him on his back.

It was all done in very good fun, and on the back of a very heavy drinkins session/competition.

Hodge is a star no question. But this is really he his first year where he is absolutly dominating. Roo had a couple of years like the one hodge is doing now. I think you cant accuratly gage at this point of time if hodge is better. Roo has enough runs on the board to have this one covered for the time being. if hodge backs this year up over and over then I think you have a case.

2005 & 2007 were the other 2 years when Hodge dominated, when he was playing purely as a midfielder before Croad went down.

2005 - Averaged 27.6 touches a game. 7th in the Brownlow.
2007 - Averaged 24 touches a game. 23 Goals. 11th in the Brownlow

Obviously Roo is ahead if you compare them over their respective careers. He has played double the games, won a Brownlow, captained for 8 (?) years, 8 (?) All Australian etc. Just happy that Hodge is only getting better every game, and hopefully by the end of his career, he can be on level par with Roo.

Hodge's efforts to win Hawthorn a flag exceed Roo's efforts in our finals games tbh. Admittedly Roo struck down with injury in 97 but 98 he was shut out of the game and had to go to HBF to influence the game.

Hodge was dominant in Hawthorn's flag year. Won the Normie as well.

Agreed Roo in front for now, and to be honest probably will be by the end of their careers (I hope so ;) ). But again - if I had to pick someone to play for my life then Hodgey would be one of my first picked.

Actually if you here Chad's version of the story its by far the most entertaining. Obviously he knew Roo was a strong bloke but then found out he was a hell of a lot harder than he thought.

Chad said he was the strongest guy he'd come across after the incident. Chad tried the tough man approach in trying to remove Roo's arms from the headlock he had on Carr, with all his strength he couldn't move Roo's arms an inch.

When Roo said "why don't you stay out of this Cornes" and gave him the stare, Chad decided it was a wise move given he couldn't even get Carr out of a headlock. Only time i've heard Chad even remotely endearing.

To be fair, they were at very different points in their respective careers.

I think Hodge is that tiny bit better in most categories, except maybe strength, marking, and kicking for goal outside 50. Or is that being naive?

Yeah i looked into that before I posted so I wouldn't get egg on my face...

98 GF win being Roos only premiership was his 6th year playing AFL at the age of 23. In the previous 4 seasons (95-98) he'd racked up 44 brownlowe votes. Won the B&F in 98 and also his 3rd AA.
Stats/game in 98 - 24d, 4.6m, 1g

2008 GF win is Hodge's only flag to date in his 7th year plyaing AFL at the age of 24. In the previous 4 seasons (05-08) he'd racked up 37 brownlowe votes. Won the B&F that year and his 2nd AA.
Stats/game in 08 - 23d, 5.7m, 1g

So I'm going to be a prick and say no.. not much difference ;)

Fighting? ;)

Leading...? Some would argue it's debateable but Roo was the competitions best captain for years and Hodge can't get the nod at his own club. Hard to say from an external point of view I guess when Hodge leads so well on the field... but Roo gets him in that category for mine.

I know Brady Rawlings, Roo hip and shouldered him quite a few years back and he said it felt like a truck hit him. His shoulder is still not right.

Yep.

Roo=GUN, top 5 player for an entire decade of players. Hodge hasn't yet played enough to judge.
