Look at someone like Ben Hudson, he didn't come from the SANFL - but he sure did come from left field. country QLD or NSW (?) whatever, we scouted it well because we do.

He was runner up in the BnF for Werribee in the VFL the year he got drafted. Also played for Mt Gravatt in the AFLQ a couple years before that. Probably not as obscure as the credit it recieves.

If you use the rookie list well you can get some solid players and a few gems. Of course you don't expect them to make it, most don't but if they work hard they can make it.

my picks would be Tom Hurley(u dont captain your state at u/18 level without being good), Sam Jacobs(i liked the look of him this year for the Eagles), Zac Hier(i really like the look of this guy), Nathan Batsanis(he absolutely dominated the TAC cup grand final with Mackay so why not have both of them)

I don't know I agree at all. they have gotten fantastic value for money on their picks, and they have gotten good service from their rookie list too.
plus the odd curve ball such as brad smith.

For a team that got a priority pick 5 years ago, to being premiers strikes me that they're recruiting team is doing something right!

Don't get me wrong, the Eagles recruitment during the period they were rebuilding was exceptional. They have also got some very solid players come up through the rookie system aswell but most of the kids that are taken by clubs are recognised young players, Eagles just made some very good decisions with some of them. They rookied Cox when he wasn't a standout, they took a punt with Kerr after everyone else passed on him, etc. But, they were not flawless, they also picked up some outright duds like McDougal with an early pick.

I think they have an advantage with West Australian young players, they would have a strong network of contacts in WA much like the Crows have in SA with your links to the SANFL clubs and junior clubs which feed into those clubs.

I think a bigger issue is that Victorian clubs on average have not put the time and effort into SA and WA and that has allowed the local clubs there to have greater access to good quality players. I think attitudes are changing and clubs looked interstate a lot more than they used to, that was despite Vic Country playing off against Metro in the championships.

A few years ago Crows could probably have picked Shane Edwards up with a third or fourth round pick, he was gone pretty fast this year.

Only one I haven't seen play is Hier, so no comment ......But I would be absolutely amazed if pick any of those players as rookies ...in fact I could almost guarantee it.

Looked at players training with AFL clubs in the hope of being rookied .......very much surprised that Chad Gibson is not training with any club.

Port which has a cast of thousands training with them also has no Gibson.

Has he lost interest or do clubs know something ????
