Watts is a 20 year old KPP, you can't call him a failure just yet. He has at least three years before we can write him off. Hell, Tippett is 25 this year and is yet to break out according to some.

I do think that the expectation that Jack Watts will become a gorilla forward at the focal point of attack is misplaced, at best he will a second/third forward, winger or perhaps even third tall in defence.

Of course they do, hence why everyone drafted becomes equal.

more bollocks. it's all about expectations mate. with a pick 1 you have high expectations of a champion, with a late rookie pick you expect that most likely will never play a game. if you get a middle of the road player at pick 1 you are pretty disapointed, if you get one as a late rookie you are delighted

I think I agree with you. Once players are drafted onto a list, they are on par with each other new recruit on the list, with regards to "making it" as an AFL player. The first round-picked player doesn't get to only participate in half the drills, compared to the last rookie taken; you all do the same drills, with the best suited players (best new performing player) from training making the team. It is the expectations of the supporters that differs between players based on when they were taken. Take a look at the Tom Lynch thread to see what I mean (Managed to get hijacked into a Taylor Walker vs Tom Lynch thread).

Now, back to what I came here for. I don't think a lot of people have Wright in their Round 1 teams. Was he on the ground as much as Callinan? Watch a replay of the game and see his touches/tackles. I want to see Callinan in the team Round 1, but why aren't people putting Wright in their teams?

Yeh I actually really rated Wright's game on Saturday night. I thought he was very good when the game was tight in the first half. Callinan was obviously exceptional, but in fairness Collingwood pretty much capitulated after half time. I think you could definitely make a case for either of them or even both for round 1.

I am all on the Wright bandwagon... Was extremely impressed with him in his 19 games last year. I think Callinan can play and he impressed me against Collingwood, but one would think that a combination of Wrights age and the fact that he has impressed at AFL level would put him in front....

Callinan is just the 'new shiny toy' a la Brodie Martin....

Wright's game on Friday night was certainly under-rated, at the end of the first half I had him ahead of Callinan, only for Callinan to come on and kill it too. I wonder whether we won't try and fit both into our side. History tends to show that its the smaller forwards who tend to excel in final, where the taller forwards tend to struggle due to their coming up against the best key defenders in the business. Having said that, they are still important as it the small forwards tend to feed off of the contests that the bigger guys make in the air.

Reilly was bloody frustrating on Friday, he's now the new Scott Stevens. Does some superb work in defense, goal saving kind of stuff, only to cough the ball up with an unforgivable error, costing us an opposition shot on goal. I do agree though that we may struggle to fit Johncock, Jaensch, Reilly and Doughty into the one side. Especially when there are guys like Petrenko, Smith and van Berlo who could cover their roles well enough if required.

Otten started poorly on Friday, but I think that game may have been a bit of a turning point for him, he took a couple of great marks late in the game that were akin to the Otten of old. I think his confidence may be on the up again. Although, Shaw also did a great job on Dawes, will be tough to choose between these two (who was apparently playing, not that I noticed).

Martin's game was similar to Otten, started poorly, but then seemed to work into and do things that reminded me why they were both so highly rated.

Mackay I'm starting to think may need a couple of games in the SANFL, he just seems to be struggling to have a genuine impact on the game. We all know that his best is sublime, but I think he just needs to go back to the SANFL and find a bit of the footy.

I wonder whether we might consider using Lynch as a sub early. Usually I'm for a mid as a sub, but Lynch has shown he can really come on late in the game and sneak a few goals. People have been discussing Henderson as a tactical sub in a similar way, I wonder whether Lynch might be the may. See if we might be able to exploit a tired defensive unit with another, refreshed tall. He could also move into defense too and cover there if required.

That's not to say Porps wouldn't.

Vardy was one of the best clutch goalkickers we ever had.

It was, especially when he kicked 3 against us in that great final against the Dees in 02. Maybe he did want a change of scenery in the end. I have this recollection that when his previous contract came up there was talk we might offload him, so it didn't come totally out of the blue when he left. Was still disappointing though.

You are 'wright' and wrong.... I think Wright is crucial to our side as a defensive forward. I think every team needs one, although they dont look impressive on paper... I had him as an emergency in my 22, I think I made a mistake.. I think he is almost a certainty for round 1 as Callinan and Porps can not play that role.

But you are wrong with Callinan. He isn't my shiny new toy. He just possesses gamebreaking skill and adds a new dimension to our side... To compare him to Brodie Martin hype of last year is unfair.

Yes, I don't see Callinan as the shiny new toy. There's no novelty factor here - he's well and truly suited for AFL level. The only issue is that he won't be around for very long, and we're not really close to a flag. Balancing those two issues is difficult.

I don't share your optimism for 2013 But I do hope we'll be contending again before he retires. I don't see why he couldn't play another few years, injury permitting of course.

im gonna assume douglas and Rutten both come in for rd1 which leaves 5 to go out. so baesed on the game tonight, id say the 5 unlucky ones to miss would be McKernan, Wright, Otten, Doughty and Kerridge

McKernan's contribution to the game was a grand total of 2 hitouts - and I can't even say that I saw them. To be fair, he didn't get a whole lot of game time in the first half and was subbed out during the main break. His main competitor (Lynch) was fairly active in the 2nd half, reigniting the contest. It all depends upon whether or not the selectors are happy asking Jacobs to ruck with only Tippett as backup. I still have no clue as to which way they will go.

Wright did very little in the first half and was subbed out for the 2nd. I think he's now officially lost his battle with Callinan. With Douglas set to return it's game over.

Doughty will play.

Kerridge's time will come and it won't be long in coming. First injury to a small/mid-sized player and he'll be in like Flynn. However, I agree - he's one of the 5 who will miss out.

Otten is fighting with Shaw for the 3rd tall defender slot once Rutten returns. If Rutten doesn't come up then both will almost certainly play. I think Otten will hold his position, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Shaw get the nod instead. Shaw has been one of the revelations of the MMC.

So.. having said that Doughty will play, who then misses out? Either Jaensch or Henderson. Jaensch may have just played himself out of a R1 position tonight. He ignited the crowd with his fantastic super-goal, looking a million dollars when playing offensively. However, he let himself and the team down with his defensive efforts, being led a merry chase by Hill when the Weagles got the ball up their end of the ground.

I never thought I'd say this at any stage of the pre-season (prior to Thursday when the MMC GF team was named), but I honestly think that Jaensch will miss the 22 selected for R1 2012.

Henderson has surprised me by how well he's done in the backline.

Our team has some resemblance of depth which is nice. The thing is though, we've got a very even team. We don't really have that many 'untouchable players' I'd say at least half our team's spots are up for grabs with not much separating the player vying for spots. You could make a strong case for 35 players on our list who would deserve round 1 spots.

We just look so much better coming off that HBF with Jaenschs' kicking that i find it hard to see him not making the 22 Vader. I think his quality forward pushes far outweigh the couple of times he gets caught out of position, especially when you take into account the way he crumbs/sweeps the opposition F50 entries and the times when he actually gets into position to spoil/mark.

Jaensch wasn't beaten for height, he was beaten on the lead. He just didn't have the footy IQ to compete with Hill, who led him a merry chase.

Jaensch kicked 1.1 (a supergoal & failed supergoal attempt). If Hill didn't have a severe case of the yips then Jaensch's defensive failures could well have cost us 4 goals.

There's no doubt at all that he had a massive impact in the minutes immediately following his entry into the game. However, West Coast really hurt us by kicking to his man when they had the ball. He is lucky that his defensive failures didn't hurt badly - but the only reason for that is Hill's failure to convert (largely from short range). Jaensch cannot take any credit for Hill's inaccuracy.

I know it's harsh, but I honestly think that Jaensch will miss out on R1 selection. Believe me, that's a massive surprise to me too.

Hill has always been a nightmare match up for us Vader, I don't think he has ever played a bad game against us. For some reason we can't get the right match up for him. Jaensch should be used as loose man with Shaw/Otten taking someone like Hill when Rutten is back, our defensive structure looks a lot more sound that way.
