From the first centre bounce........ a free to them, a kick to them ,a mark to them and a goal to them.....all within about 20 seconds.

Somehow, I knew it was going to be a long night after that.

Collingwood were red hot from the outset and we were stone cold..............we just had no answer for their bigger, faster bodies around the clearances, not to mention spread and field kicking which was just superlative.

THB I thought it could have been a lot worse on the scoreboard at half time.

On a positive note, we kept at it and I thought got on top in the third quarter without really doing much damage on the scoreboard, The soft free and goal to them right on 3/4 time was a bitter pill to swallow.

And at least we stuck at it for all of the last quarter and weren't blown away.

In many ways this reminded me of how the game against the Swans panned out.

Finally, Simon Black is still a wonder and I'm wondering (hoping) that somehow he might be persuaded to go around one more time next season.

Zorko was admirable and just about ran himself into the ground.....and I counted at least four occasions where he busted his gut to get to space only to be ignored and see the ball sail over his head to a one on two(against us) contest:mad: ....honestly some of our guys really need to be forced to write out a hundred times on the blackboard ...."LOWER YOUR EYES".

All in all, frustrating and disappointing game but in hindsight, not totally unexpected, especially considering our outs and the fact that the we got the Pies on their "On" week.

The guy in the age bracket of 18 to 22 need to improve their fitness and hit the gym. You forgive the first year players, but when I look at guys like Karnezis, Polec, Lester, Yeo etc they need a proper pre-season to fast track their development. Just saying, after watching tonights match, the club might want to take the whole squad to Arizona rather than selected players. Couple of the young Pies players already have AFL hardened bodies.

Really impressed by Harwood tonight. It's amazing how he hasn't been able to hold down a senior spot. Clarke coming back in helped us so much, he basically owned Lynch everywhere and it's great to have him back.

Pretty bad game to watch, but what can you do with so many youngsters playing. Something was bound to happen.

Redden played a solid game, including this great goal.

And Black, well, what more can you say about the champion? Unfortunately, he was the last man standing in the midfield with Moloney going off early. Injuries have hit our side hard all of a sudden, and now we're struggling to put a team on the park. Really hope it's not serious.

All I can say is that once we start getting back our senior players in Merrett, Brown, Rockliff, Rich and Leuenberger, we will be pretty hard to stop. Thank god we have the bye next week. Our side looked so slow compared to the Collingwood team, especially when they did a brilliant job on Hanley.

I feel like Karnezis didn't have a good game, but he must be persisted with. He has goal sense, and the ability to get to the right spot. If he had his kicking boots on, it would have been a great return to senior footy.

The ones that I was pretty dissapointed with were Patfull, Polkinghorne and Adcock. Unfortunately, they are the senior players and did not step up when the heat was on. While Adcock provides great run from defence, that's pretty much all he can do. His kicking is horrible, he turns it over too much and doesn't add much to the backline. Thought Docherty showed a lot more promise tonight, he looked the goods. Zorko and McGrath were lively as well up forward and through the midfield.

All in all, just an average game and a pretty crap Friday night game to watch. It's a shame the Lions couldn't have more senior players as this match could have been interesting.

Yeah, I think learning to cope with a tag from an experienced AFL level player is something only the absolute best players can do.

Even Akermanis struggled with a really good tag.

yeh agree, i think oppostions are realising how important he is to the team, we have No one else really who has that speed and dash who takes the game on. As I mentioned the strides hanley has taken to get to this point have been massive so I have no doubts he can turn it around, just will take time.

Also highlights the lack of any other player to really run and carry the ball....

Thought Doc was impressive when he came on, and he seemed to play a lot more on wing type position.

Is it just me or do we get a terrible run of umpiring when at the gabba, NOW im not blamming the umpires for the result, collingwood clearly outplayed us ( man that was hard to type ) but all the 50 50 calls seem to go the the other way.

the lions kick ins ...arrgghhhhhhh, they were continually bombing it down the line to pretty much the same spot, made worse tonight by the fact that our 2 big tall marking options in leuy and brown both werent playing

Correct, wouldn't have changed the result but the one at a really important time was the non-decision to McGrath for in the back and then immediately the ball goes up the other end, is clearly touched and the mark is paid to Elliot who goaled. Classic 12 point play at a critical period in the second when we are having a bit of the play.

Black, Redden, Zorko, McGrath played quite well.

Paperone showed glimpses. Karnezis looked like a really good player who needs some confidence.
Crisp good for 10 minutes.
McGrath looked heaps better in forward line.
Bewick continues to show he is getting there.
Staker was decent early.
Harwood a bit of grunt was good.
Reddens last two games have been extra good.
Doc alright when on.
Did Polks do anything?
Adcock seems out of form to me.
Raines a bit out of form too.
Lester went missing.
Clarke had a shmeh game.

Is Maloney injured?

Out: Michael, Yeo, Raines
In: Mayes, Banfield, Green

Of course if Goose is available and fit enough to play, he'd be in ...

....Not to concerned that Longer cant ruck whole game. We cant compete in ruck anyway.

Anyone notice lack of shepherding in the game????

Starting to think when/if Maguire gets fit given Clarke's form we might need to send Merrett forward.

Simon Black is a champion. One of the best ever. Going to be a very sad day when he hangs yp the boots for the final time.

I thought that Redden, Harwood, and Zorko battled hard all day and were in our best.

Paparone and Clarke are two young and inexperienced talls but we need to get as many games into them this year as possible. Both played very well tonight and are a big part of the future.

Staker also played probably his best game since returning intercepting a few passes and grabbing some nice marks.

McGrath lively up forward. Keep him up there and Doc down back:thumbsu:

Just got back from the game, not much to cheer for, I always knew we were going to lose but, that was Afl gees looked life something I would expect to watch down the road , should of saved the fifty and spent it at the pub. When Collingwood took their foot off the gas that game was so uninspiring. I will have to watch another game this weekend just to remind me how AFL can be a free flowing and skillful game.
Cant beleive how some of our players just jog around just behind or off an opposition player(Zorko excluded) and that is so obvious at the game live. How about sprinting to shut an option down when they have the ball, bloody f...k all pressure at all ,and that is what kills us.

The only positive was rhino showing us some nice run and carry. Dont care if their 18 or 25 have a decent crack fellas.
Pretty much a training run for Collingwood unfortunately we did not even push them to great heights. piss poor game.saw better last year . I will need to watch the replay to comment further but I dont think I could be bothered. better things to do.
Sorry should of posted in the vent thread.

Despite being seriously undermanned and very inexperienced, we fought on gamely. We were well beaten but persisted and while they won comfortably, the margin, which could have been over a hundred was half that.

It might not seem like much right now but as the experience comes that fight will get us wins. There were lots of honest efforts and confidence and experience will gradually turn this all around. I think we had the essence of a finals team out there tonight, they just don't know it yet. A long way to go of course but we have a team that does a lot wrong still but has some heart. Give these guys some experience and they will win games.

Some are overlooking how good Redden played tonight. Redden, Black, McGrath, Zorko were very good. Paperone, Bewick, Staker and Harwood were good.

McGrath proved he must play forward.

Disappointed in Raines, Polks, Maloney (subbed)

That fantastic pressure we showed just before half time against Carlton - why is that not us from the first bounce, for as long as we can maintain it? It's a genuine question, I'm perplexed. Dogs, Roos, Swans, now Pies (did I miss one?).

Brisbane coach Michael Voss said the club's "non-negotiable" had been breached so the players were "fair game" in the long and tense post-match meeting.

"You can't compromise those, you can't do that," he said.

"It was unacceptable.

"There's a responsibility to be able to win the ball... collectively as a midfield mix, they have to be accountable. It wasn't good enough.

"We are falling short of the mark in terms of pressure."

Early game has been our biggest problem all year. Like Zorko said in the post-game interview - "we're always coming back from behind". When we're in it early we seem to genuinely be in it for the whole game. Other games we switch on far too late for it to have any real impact. Very frustrating.

Attack on the football.

Thats all. Harwood and Black ran hard to the football and didn't stop when they got there, they put their head over the ball and went at it.

Zorko and Redden were a step behind but at least didn't shirk the contest and put pressure on their opponent.

Almost every other player ran to the contest, and then stopped, Hung back, waited, and didn't go in. At best we were caught flat footed, at worst we did not affect the contest.

Karnesis is a potentially good player because he has a real sense of where to go on the football field but there is a lot of work for him to do on his defensive game before he is going to be a regular.

He really has to show some hunger when the opposition have the ball. Three times in front of where I was sitting he ran half-heartedly to a contest he could have been in. Three other times he backed off from the man with the ball instead of making tackles.

I can forgive a little bit of it for inexperience, part to fitness maybe (a couple of times were late in the game) but I hope part of the issue isn't just a plain lack of work ethic when it comes to defense. Or am I being too harsh?

Clarke, Harwood and Docherty were the young players that I thought really showed potential last night and contributed.
Redden was just as good as Black in my opinion. His tackles, critical score involvements, disposal efficiency and that goal equated to a strong performance. Black was very good too. McGrath and Zorko were the other two senior players that played well.
A lot of the younger guys don't know where to run, especially defensively. Collingwood had so many free players last night, and often it wasn't because we were slack or unfit, it was because our team was disorganised and didn't have the game smarts. That comes with time. Sam Michael in particular had no idea where to run as a key forward but give him time. The younger guys (most of our team) really lacked composure. And they had weaker bodies than the Collingwood players, and contested ball and tackling were terrible. We were poor in contested ball, tackling, decision making and game smarts. And having a key forward with some ability would give us something to kick to. But I don't think we can expect too much of such a young side and they are certainly improving and developing this team :thumbsu:

The game was a shocker just like the Footscray game i went to . What this game highlights to me is the following - what i really want is the afl to get brisbane lions reserves to play in the vfl . ATM we are playing a reserves side in i feel a second rate competition . This leads to inflated egos.they think they are better than what they really are , OK to beat queensland teams by 100 points or so every week. I realy want to test where our list is at against good/better competition. reason when they get the chance in teh seniors they seem to struggle Secondly the afl should allow ( i will stand corrected if i am wrong) the older academy boys into TAC cup comp for next year a Brisbane lions /sun team in the TAC to help anaylse the strenghts and weaknesses in the kids .Lets test them to see if they aare up to aafl standard or not. This would i feel be a tremendous help in developing the BRAND in Queensland. Several of the players on list should simply be either traded or cut . I said it before and i will say it again we desparatley need to draft SKILL and SPEED into the team and let VOSS go WE MUST TRADE TO GET EARLY PICKS AND PICK UP SKILL

Not that Harwood had a perfect game, but I was really struck by how confident and comfortable he looked out there for someone who gets so few senior appearances.
Compared to many of his more Senior counterparts he looked more than composed and his deft handball out of packs, given the slippery conditions was great. Strikes me as a natural hard mid fielder who could rack up constant big numbers of possessions and if ever given this role again, may start getting important clearances which others (apart from Blacky) don't seem to be capable of.

I thought Black, Harwood, Redden (that goal!!!), Zorko, Paparone and Staker were good. I'm not going to say anything about anyone else.
Agree with your sentiments here but Stakers possessions were largely non effective. Karnesis looked lively up forward and if he had converted those two goals would have been considered amongst this group. Are we not forgetting Ash McGrath, who has had his detractors this season. I thought that he handled the ball well all night and made the most of his limited opportunities.

Completely agree with this. I'd missed Patty K and am a huge fan, but defensively he was pretty soft last night and I found that way more disappointing than him missing a couple of shots. When the opposition had the ball he seemed half-hearted and would just give his opponent a bit of a push as he kicked rather than lay a tackle. In the last quarter I thought he seemed to lift the intensity a bit though and I did see a few tackles, so perhaps at 3/4 time someone gave him a word, or he just picked up on it himself.

Really want him to be a regular in the team as he provides so much and seems to mark anything that comes his way. I just wish he had some Zorko-hustle about him!

I think the long running Karnezis midfield experiment needs to stop. He was deplorable last night in the middle with a softest to the ball and contest and devoid of ideas and effort...but forward late in the game he looked very promising as one of the few that demanded the footy. I see a real player in Karnezis as a forward, but the leap to play midfield seems beyond him atm
