??? Care to elaborate Gadz? Do you have more concerns than an odd bad game or being underdone?

I actually know nothing except people who were at the game said Zorko was off the pace/ timing of the game - it wasn't just a tag.

Zorko is a true elite player and he only had 11 touches that didn't have a significant impact. I can't recall him being that quiet in years and because I'm paranoid I've fixated on the possibility of an injury.

like hodge, zorko's importance to the team is more than his personal contribution when he is playing. He provides direction and instant feedback, and he brings the young players into the game. I'm sure I'm panicking but we have so few elites to lead the way I'm probably going to jump at shadows throughout the whole season. Going to be a long year.

Anyone else think that Gardiner had one of the worst games of his career on Saturday? His lack of urgency was telling. Very visible even in the highlights. Unlikely to be dropped, but boy I hope he lifts his effort next week.

Not sure what everyone's fascination with Cutler is tbh. Never really shown anything that screams AFL quality, and fwiw he has been playing forward in the NEAFL, at least he did in the game last week, so make of that what you will. I'd be happier with Bailey coming up if the opportunity arose

Would not mind bailey coming in next week. Culter though, I would give a go at full forward.

From 'Around the state leagues'

Athletic utility Tom Cutler bagged eight goals as a high half-forward in a landslide win in a NEAFL practice match against Wilston Grange on Saturday.

But rookie-listed midfielder Jake Barrett, captain for the day, was best afield, leading from the front with his contested-ball work.

The Lions’ runners enjoyed a day out, with first-round draft pick Zac Bailey showing great composure and the experienced Rohan Bewick playing selflessly to create numerous goals.

Many thanks for that. and how did Cox go. Sorry to ask ,I am a fan of his. I would like cutler at ff next week,to see how he goes.

That was all the information I could find on the AFL site. I think the Lions will likely provide an update throughout the week though.

I have high hopes. Got pace, good user of football and good kick. I also think he has a touch of brilliance - just needs opportunity to show - maybe half forward will suit. Does have to work on his contested possessions though.

Why hasn't allison never been given a go at half back? played there is his junior years and given our backline is very slow at the moment his pace will be a huge benefit, He should 100% replace rich can easily see him rebounder and intercepting in our backline will be a huge plus, him and nrobbo should rotate with each with mid and back time will be perfect

Think you will be well liked with your first post on here.
wasn't just the dropped marks it was the selfishness that killed me and I'm 99% sure he won't drop him, fagan doesn't like to drop the older boys and doesn't seem to rate matho as much as i do either

Fagan comes from the Hawks system. The same system that played spuds like Hartung, Schoenmakers and Langford.
Also the same system that won 4 premierships and will be pushing top 8 again this year...
He knows what he's doing.

Bell will go out if Fagan thinks he needs to. Until then we just have to believe.

Speed out of the backline is overrated.

I wouldn't say he doesn't rate Mathieson. If Fagan didn't rate Mathieson, we wouldn't have seen him much at all last year. Needs to focus on afl standard endurance mode rather than beast mode if he wants to make it IMO.

I would say he is, trained with NRobbo who is our endurance king

This is a huge call. He took a few marks, won a few contests (often outnumbered) and fell in the hole in bunch of times. Not amazing but not terrible. Hard exsistance watching it sling shot back at you all day from turnover.

Edit: Equal highest contested possession winner with 6

This needs to be said.

I was at the St Kilda game and and I think the Bell stuff is too rough.

The running that guy does to put himself in a position to compete is pretty epic.

I sat close to the boundary and there was a few times he stood under fluffy rubbish only to get smashed by 2-3 defenders who had all the time in the world to line him up.

The thudding/impact noise off the body contact each time made everyone watching close by wince. It was tough footy and he forced the contest and brought the ball to ground. Of course no other lion was close by so StKilda crummed the ball..... But Bell was hard.

I left the ground with Bell noted as a physical presence in offence. Yes he butchered it a few times.... But so did Zorko and McCluggage and NRobbo.

I'm not saying he stared.... But wasn't as bad as what I'm reading either.

I thought Hipwwod, Walker and McStay were our worst. With Walker being dropped.

Out Walker and Rich.
In Allison and Cutler.

Injured forced changes only. You should only drop blokes this early in the year if you’ve been towelled up or for lack of effort. I didn’t see a lack of effort on Saturday, just some poor decision making and deplorable skills.

100% agree and was actually gobsmacked by the amount calling for Bells head. Not saying he was our best but he certainly wasn't our worst and looked very good when thrown in the midfield. Won a few centre clearances, won a few hard balls and ran himself to exhaustion. Kicking needs work but his best was when he had little space so had to win the hard ball and dish it off by hand. A few times he done that and we were away on a stoppage break resulting in scoring shots.
