I thought the starting sub was someone that was outside the named 22.

Surely he could perform some role for 4 quarters. He may be subbed out but a competent selection committee wouldn’t back themselves into a corner before the ball has bounced.

He could play the deepest forward role late if required, will still be quick on the burst.

In theory yes, but it is messy to take a best 22 player and omit them on Thursday before it turns out that they're actually in the 23 after all, which creates needless media speculation (see also: Cotchin at Richmond, Kennedy at Carlton, Heppell for us).

The other option is what we did in round 2, where Heppell became the sub but was originally named in the 22 so was never "omitted", and Phillips (who had missed the week before anyway) officially came into the 22 an hour before the game, despite knowing since Wednesday that he would be playing.
