I think Madden out was always going to happen, at least once the game got moved to the Gabba. There's less of an incentive to rest a veteran in a home game. I'm sure there will be more chances for Madden in future, he made a good account of himself last week.

I think the most impressive part of Madden's game was his willingness to defend which has been a weakness of his in the VFL, although now I suspect said weakness was him being coached to focus on offence. If he can keep improving his defensive work he'll take Birchalls spot when it's his time to retire, although Birchall is in great form.
