As i understand it our ruck coach for last year was Barry Stoneham. Now nothing against Barry but how many games did he play in the ruck. Not a lot.

Back when Steven King was a dominant ruckman was it no coincidence that he had Damien Bourke helping him out. I also believe Crackers Keenen helped him also.

I believe we need a quality ruck coach.

It is a must for our midfield to become better. I know Sam Newman has been helping Melbourne out last year would he be a good option, apparently knows the craft very well, and White/Jamar were very good in the ruck this year.

I am not suggesting we get Sam in but i do believe we need a ruck coach just to round off our coaching panel.

Sam is a respected Ruck coach and would probably do it for nothing but I fear the barrage our rucks would get in the media from him if they don't perform they way he would like them to.
Crackers has been used as a ruck coach but I can't help thinking if I was a player and being coached by him I would be thinking "you are such a far king idiot"

Bourkey resides in Queensland, and Crackers and Sammy have had a go before.

I don't. I think ruck coaches are yet another of the vastly overrated non-jobs in footy. Our problems in the ruck - such as they are - are to do with fitness, especially King. It's nothing to do with technique. Ottens is one of the best tap ruckman in the competition, and King is perfectly adequate. At this level they should know their job, I'm not convinced any guru ruck coach is going to make a difference. Just gives them another excuse in case they fail.

If they need to make a change, it's play Ottens as first ruck as he's more durable. He doesn't need a coaching lesson.

What direct effect would he have on the brigade of Bartel, Ling, Corey etc? None.

Well by having a ruck coach we would hopefully win more tap outs and hit it to better spots. This would help the above players because they would have more oppurtunity to get first use of the ball in the middle and around the ground giving us more clearences.

Not really a 'direct' effect.

I think Crackers still works with King a fair bit. That could explain King's form.

I think a ruck coach would be most beneficial to the younger lads in Blakey and West, not so much King and Ottens.

I'm not so sure it's as easy as pinpointing that having a ruck coach equates to more tap outs, which equates to more centre clearances (the strategic facet to clearances being one thing), but I would certainly think having a proper, experienced, full-time ruck coach would be in the best interests of the club - particularly in the long run.

And yes, Sam Newman is one man I wouldn't hesitate to bring over.

I would try to decifer the type of ruckman Blake and West will be , and then look at who has been the most successful ruckman of this sort who is a master teacher and get him to the club.

Now , the way I see it. Blake and West look closer to leap/tap ruckmen than ever being big bodied flat footed monster types that King really is. Ottens probably a blend of them both these days although when fit certainly is excellent at tapping to position.

Now although Sam is excellent he is not our only option. Simon Madden was recognised as being possibly the best ruckman in the modern era and surely Bomber must know the man well enough to get him involved. There must be others as well , what about Shaun Wren top ruckman , ruined by bad knees.

Think a new ruck coach could be handy, with King beaten by 5 donkeys in the last 5 rounds. Maybe its time Blake and Ottens shared the duties and King on last chance?

Agreed, and a fair point. There would be the preference for someone like Matthew Clarke to be showing both young lads the art of tapwork.
