However the Jacobs and Grigg trades show that currency doesn't really matter if the player is out of contract. He'll go where he wants to go and we'll get what they give us.

Very true regarding Bower. Wish we gave up puss for Judd, since he wanted to come to us...

Did anyone hear a guy yesterday morning on SEN saying that Daniel Motlop will be playing with the Blues next year? Not sure his source or even how I feel about it(if true). Thoughts?

I agree Hark's. But since this guy sounded so sure, I thought i'd see if anyone else has heard this.
Boy's got skills, just no brain...

They all sound sure yet the strike rate is about the same as for a drunk playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
Given enough swings a strike will eventually ensue.

Not sure this is correct at all, Henderson has shown enough over this season to suggest he will be a long term key Centre half back, he is a better option as a key defender than Bower longer term and it is unlikely the MC will remove Henderson from defence based on his current form.

Not sure anyone on here is advocating putting Bower up for trade, but the fact remains he is out of contract, had at least 2 ordinary seasons in a row and has seemingly not been on the mc's radar much at all the second part of the season, when we have been so light on for taller options.

Bower is the missing link in us having a perfect backline. Tall backlines win premierships. Even when we won our last flag we had talls like Silvagni (194cm) Sexton (192cm), Dean (188cm), Christou (190cm) and Manton (185 cm but often played full back or on resting ruck) playing in defence.

Good sides make the opposition kick long to their forwards and back it up with having a tall backline and tall flankers who can run and get in front of the opposition key forwards. Collingwood have a backline that is very tall like ours in 1995.

Bower is a tall who can run, attack and play on medium forwards. This is why he is worth his weight in gold. I see Jamison playing full back, Henderson playing center half back and Bower as the 3rd tall in the Christou/O'Brien/Gilbert/Blake/Gwilt/Harley type role. And Laidler as a Peter Dean type. Look at the teams who have played in grand finals latly, very tall backlines. They usually have at least two non key position players 188cm or more.

We don't even know if Watson or McCarthy can pley yet. But probably can. We all know Bower can play. Surely the club wouldn't let him walk.

Now that would be the turn around of the century Bib... but then again the facilities at GWS would be about the same as at Melbourne and why move away from family and the place you know.

Err..tripling of salary may have a small bearing on the decision.

As Kreuzer, Murphy and Henderson have proven money isn't always enough.

I tend to believe that it comes down to who coaches Melbourne next year for Scully. I wouldn't expect an announcement until then. If it's a highly regarded (in league circles, not necessarily mine) coach like Eade or Lyon then I expect Scully to stay.

They will.... Cash in and get a player wanting to come home or early picks...

Bower would have to be one of the most overated players to have ever pulled on a guernsey for Carlton. He looked promising 2-3 years ago, but has gone backwards because of injuries, lack of confidence etc.

You don't sell low. The only way I see us trading Bower is A) if Bower demands out (which very well may be the case) or B) If the club doesn't believe that he'll ever get back to his best and will take what he can now for him (which wont be very much at all).

Not overrated in the slightest. Injuries have cut him down. Don't confuse injuries for lacking talent which is the true measure when you're giving someone the overrated tag. The one time that injuries haven't been the root of all evil for him was in 2009 when he put himself in All-Australian contention. At his best he is invaluable as he is the prototypical third tall / rebounding back flanker. At his best a combination of Yaz - Hendo - Bower would give us close to the best half backline in the league, if not THE best.

Why, do you think we'd get a better player or 'cheaper' one or do you want us not to trade at all?

I just don't get it. A lot of Carlton supporters seem to fear any kind of action that represents anything other than a kind of mundane turnover of the list. I mean, what are we trying to do here? Win a premiership or trying to present a nice turn-out for Kernahan and co the next time we play Essendon in an exhibition match?

No, it was more to do with the fact that he was long odds to leave Port, want to come to Carlton and Carlton being in a position to offer something we were willing to give up. Couple this with the fact that his name kept coming up randomly by the same posters in unrelated threads.

It's not as though nobody wanted him, just that we didn't want to have his name pop up all the time based on a pie in the sky wishlist.

Going to have to agree with you there.
Definatly over rated, every one has massive wraps on him. Takes the game on which has its ups and downs because he runs himself into trouble far to often. If all our players were fit and up and running I dont see him in our best 22.

Would not faze me if he left

If you dont back yourself to take on the opposition, then you just end up chipping it around the backline. Bower tries to take the game on and in the past, didnt have the players who could keep up with him on the burst and usually ended up in trouble.

If we can get him fit and on the park, then having him as the third tall along side of Yazz and Hendo will give our halfback line the pace and attack that most of the other clubs would be drooling over.

Throw Rusty and Army on the wings or in the centre of the ground and we have a very fast rebounding defence.

Jamo, Laids and Duigan are all excellent readers of the play so having them behind the rebounding players will mean that we can chop out and cover for the guys who are making the 50-80m plays (Bower and Yazz)

I too agree with this. Laidler is an upgrade, and once he gets some real size will be a quality defender. Don't know what everybody is fretting about really.

Force freo's hand, demand overs for him. If he walks into PSD it truly is their loss as their backline is shite and we really don't have a requirement for him.

Bower for Morabito? Coming off the injury this is feasible. An up and coming quality mid with great finishing skills

Gee why dont we just play 22 rebounding defenders? Surely we'd just have opposition clubs just drooling:rolleyes:

What's not to rate? His last fully fit year he racked up touches, provided attack off the HBF where very few others could, high disposal efficiency and took some sizeable scalps.

Injuries are a curse, but those on here willing to let him go for average picks or players need their heads read. The guy deserves the same level of support that AW has been afforded through his tough years...at least Paul gave us something prior to his run with injuries.
