Ryan Murphy?

Just from an outsider point of view, just wanted to get some thoughts about Ryan Murphy?
how do u guys rate him? from what i understand not a lot of freo supporters do. he is tall looks a solid build and from games i watched last year could take a mark.
Just wondering bout him...

Rated very highly. Just hasn't had a good preseason and is out of form at the moment.

Adam Campbell though not as naturally talented has had a ripper preseason and will play round 2. Many say he should of played round 1.

very true Tatter should have been dropped to the WAFL as awake up call.

Kiwi has done everthyting right and very much deserves agame.

Tatter need also to watch young Mourish from EF.

A lot of Freo supporters rate him highly. As you say he is strong and can use this to take contested marks and is a very accurate set shot. Part of his downside is that he doesn't have huge speed on the lead, so he is more a "Wrestle and push off his man" or a "pack marker" sort of forward.

I still think Chris Tarrant coming to Freo is the worst thing that could happen to his career. IMO you only can only afford a max of 2 key position forwards with Pav being a shoe in. Murphy has to fight directly with Tarrant for the other position and clearly Tarrant has an edge over him in the speed and experience department.

The overall verdict is that he has talent as a forward but based on what I have seen this season so far and last season I think we should more interested in guys that can win the ball and move it quickly from the midfield then about who is going to kick the goals. If this means sacrificing another 3rd or 4 forward (We already cut Medhurst) to play another midfielder then so be it.

You could be right about the career thing. But I think you are mistaken about the three key forwards thing. Every team is looking for three key forwards, and a ruckman.

At their best, the Saints had Gehrig, Reiwoldt and Hamill, and then Kosi. Brisbane had Lynch, Brown, Bradshaw and that big lug that only used to play in September. Essendon had Lloyd, Lucas and Barnard with Hird chiming in. Terry Wallace was playing three key forwards last season.

So Murphy has the chance to be the absolute icing on the cake. His form is crucial in taking the third defender away from Pavlich and Tarrant. But to do that, the team has to kick it to him every now and then. Especially when he is the best option. Otherwise, the opposition figures out they might as well double-team Pavlich.

In the CC interview, he said Murphy is down on confidence. I think he needs a 2-3 games at Souths to get his timing back together again. And I think the team need to be less Pav conscious. I think Murph has the talent to take most AFL third defenders to the cleaners.

You have to move it quickly to someone. At full strength, having the three key forwards plus Farmer is a dream scenario. I think if you have to add midfielders to win the ball, you're being too defensive. You're better replacing those midfielders who aren't winning it with ones who can.

Agree, Adelaide also used 3 KP forwards to great effect over the last two seasons, with Hentshell, Perrie and Welsh.

I'm a big Murphy fan, he is a very good mark and kick for goal. He averaged around 2.5 goals per game after the break last year which is a fantastic return from a guy his age. It will be very disappointing if he can't get a kick with Tarrant joining the club, luckily he is contracted for next season which gives us time to build chemistry between our 3 talls.

I'll be disappointed if Murphy and Campbell are both on the plane today. Whoever isn't going to play needs to have a run wafl, Gilmore and Webster should travel as the emergencies.

I think Murphy has some good bits to his game...marking and kicking, but his lack of urgency and intensity at times is bewildering.....he needs to be more demanding of the players to deliver the ball to him and I don't know if its lack of talk or bad body landguage but he just goes long periods with getting the pill.

Having the best forwards in the comp won't win us any game sunless we can win enough of the ball in the midfield and then kick it to our forwards advantage.

We lack exposive pace from the midfield and stoppages. yes bomber has pace but too often he runs sideways to the boundry instead of running directly at goals/forwards

Hopefully he goes back to the WAFL, finds his Mojo and works his way back into the side.

This is the thing I find most interesting about you guys giving up a bit for Tarrant. I agree with the assertion in the post below yours that good teams stretch defences for height and create match up problems, but with Sandilands and Longmuir spending more time up forward this year, that seems to be the third spot filled. Especially with Longmuir's knees making long stints in the ruck impossible for him.

Just IMHO if the Dockers were going to spend big on a player, I would have loved to see you get some speed and ball clearing ability into the middle. Reality is Tarrant is VERY good, but has his recruitment merely pushed aside a very good player you were already developing?

Absolutely spot on. I was bewildered by the Tarrant trade. Thought we should have moved heaven & earth the beef up the midfield and left Pav, Murph, Wiz etc to keep on doing what they had been doing beautifully in the latter part of 2006.

Depends how he goes in the wafl. He couldn't get near the footy in the early season games so he's gobe back to the 2's to find a bit of form & confidence. they fact he started in the first 22 round 2 suggests those that matter still want him out there so if he starts burning it up in the magoos he'll be back asap. Hell the way we are going with reports & injuries we may have to play him next week anyway.

yes i agree ,when the tarrant/solomon deal was done i thought it would be ok as long as it did not disrupt the development of guys like murphy and hinder his opportunities,murphy imho has the potential to be a key foreward ,if he is given the oppotuninty ,instead his confidence is said to be suffering,which is understandable given that he was developing well and they go out and recruit someone to take his spot,how freo is that?

Ryan has not looked interested and has played with no intensity.

That is not Tarrant's fault
