That's what Sheeds thinks:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,25561533-19742,00.html

And I agree.

I think Ryder is one who responds to responsibility and having the spotlight on him. I think that making him Captain would bring him out of himself more on the ground and make him a better player, and I think he has the quality to lead from the front.

I also agree that Watson is perhaps someone who's better off just going about his business without that added pressure.

ive got to say i think sheeds has lost it this time, no doubt ryder has probably the most talent on our list and im confident in saying he will be a star, but a leader? watching ryder on the field he rarely opens his mouth and i have seen no evidence of his leadership skills. yes he has the talent of some of the great essendon players but i cant see him yelling at teammates when a ppropriate, grabbing someone and telling them to get to this position and i definately cant see him grabbing the whole team at half time and pumping them up

I'd say it's a pretty good decision.

He currently doesnt have a leadership position so how could he do the things above now?

thats the point he cant, if he can improve those things then maybe but a club captain is the front of the organisation, he will deal with the media the most out of any other player, is to a large degree responsible for the clubs public perception and needs to be able to deal with many types of personalities and complex situations

if ryder improves in these areas then by all means make him captain but at this stage i cant see it happening

McVeigh for me. When Lloyd eventually goes, we'll be a very young side, and the guy bleeds Essendon.
I also think it would be too much pressure on Ryder, and would weigh him down. We are hoping for him to be a star player, but i'm not sure on the leadership front.

It's funny reading Sheedy's article. As usual you get the feeling that he has lost it but he always seems to have a point. While I could see Ryder as a future captain I'd say someone like McVeigh could have a few years of captaincy until Ryder/Watson/whoever else are really ready. It seems we have a lot of potential captains but those players really need to live up to their potential. With that said, they may do that by the end of the year.

Ryder would have to string together a couple of seasons of what he is doing now to even be considered for the role. I think Captaincy would be a burden on Patty. Hopefully can prove me wrong, but he does not seem to have the make up of a leader. Just let him play free without that pressure.

I love Sheeds, but he lost the plot years ago, and IMHO has been detrimental to the club in his last 5 years. He thought he was bigger than the club in the end.

I don't think he can't. He hasn't.

Jobe Watson is a clear stand out and will without a doubt be the next captain. The only other person I can see it going to would be McVeigh, but I think Jobe has made it blatantly obvious that he has the right stuff and would do a fantastic job in every area required.

Except for the fact that Ryder is quiet as a mouse on the field according to Matthew Knights.

I love Ryder there is no question about that, however he is not captain material. A lot would need to change.

The article strikes me as more to do with the opportunity to groom a young Aboriginal boy than it does about finding the best on field leader at the club.

In May 2009 it is just unfounded speculation

After Lloyd it will be Hille

after Hille it will be Welsh or Watson

paddy, despite being an awesome kid, doesnt seem like a natural leader ... simply because he looks like a bit of an intravert. I think a lot of indigenous players are as well, hence why you rarely seen any as captain. they've got the qualities but they're quieter types. not ideal for off-field leadership requirements.

It's funny reading Sheedy's article. As usual you get the feeling that he has lost it but

He has lost a captain anyway.

In Ryder we have a great opportunity for our game to teach a young man to be a great leader in football. Not many Aboriginals get that opportunity. Essendon captains since 1980 were Simon Madden, Neale Daniher, Terry Daniher, Tim Watson, Mark Thompson, James Hird and Matthew Lloyd.

Staggered watching the game today at how quickly Ryder has become so exceptional in the ruck, and how bad we look witohut him there. Also not a lot standing up besides him...

Without wanting to lay into Paddy, because he's been immense this year, today showed exactly why he shouldn't be captain.

A captain wouldn't watch on as his team-mate (a first year player no less) gets run down without opening his mouth. That's exactly what Paddy did.

Superstar in the making - yes.
Future captain - no.

I really, really don't see Ryder captaining the EFC. Did anyone else feel this was a little slight stab at Jobe since there has been a little bit of talk about how well suited he would be to be the next captain of Essendon?

"But I think you're asking for trouble if you elevate him. When you get into the preliminary final or the Grand Final you don't want to be wondering. You've got to get it right"

Wouldn't you be left wondering with Paddy as captain, as he would be a more speculative choice? This argument against Jobe lost me. Sheeds should worry about Richmond's marketing battle ahead.

What's O'Donnell? Chopped liver?

pointless article at this stage by sheedy. ryders looking pretty good at the moment and seems to be coming into his own however he doesn't need added pressure. knights knows him better than sheeds and has often said he is a very quiet, laconic kid so i doubt captaincy would suit him.

lets wait until the end of the season and see if: (a) lloyd should no longer be captain or decides to step down from the role and (b) which player proves his worth over that period.

given it could happen between 1-3 years than it could be any of watson, stanton, winderlich, prismall, mcveigh, welsh, myers, ryder. Some will think i'm crazy listing myers but he has been noted for his leadership qualities when recruited and during his time in the club. He would only get it though if lloyd stayed for another 2-3 yrs as that would give him the necessary time to elevate his performance to the level required. Another good young leader is Hurley.

My gut says no. I would love someone like McVeigh to lead the side. He oozes class and bleeds for the club. No doubt anyone would follow him to hell and back. Beyond him I see the leaders in the club being Watson, Winders and Reimers.

Jobe Watson is the only player that can lead this side. He has the respect from all the players, he is the hardest worker in the team, he rarely gets injured, he can change the game with his hands in tight and is still getting better.
