Time for the final edition of #ratstats for season 35.

We won't be mentioning a certain goals kicked milestone because it is still too soon.

At least we're making the most of our off season.

Stay tuned for more details of our Toots Hibbert medal night.

Just under 24 hours until the Toots Hibbert medal night.

BLUEALLTHRU will no doubt somehow con the security into letting him in.

As soon as philreich has finished watching MAFS.
I'll watch MAFS after you become a Collingwood fan.

The night will kick off straight after the first over at The Oval, when England will hopefully lose 3 wickets in the one over.

Good evening everyone. I thought about waiting until Australia took its first wicket, but the way we've started in the field, that might have meant a midnight start, and everyone would have gone to bed by then, so I thought I'd better get things underway now.

Welcome to the Sin City Swamprats best & fairest awards for season 35. It was pretty much a season we'd all rather forget - the only positive being that we managed to avoid the wooden spoon. Still, 4 wins from 16 games was far from ideal, and I figured it was time for me to hand over the captaincy to someone else, to see if the move would generate a bit more vibrancy and excitement around the place: which in turn would hopefully lead to some on field success. We'll see how that goes under jackster83 this season - I have every confidence that he'll do a wonderful job.

As well as finding our latest club champion (Toots Hibbert medallist), we'll also be crowning our Groove medallist (highest goal kicker) and captain's award - my final one before I hand over to the new skipper. The Drazah Medal will not be awarded tonight, as we didn't introduce any new rookies in S35.

So let's get this show on the road!!!

Round 1 v Dragons by jackster83

The opening round of season 35 saw the Swamprats hit the road first up, taking on the Dragons at Ljp86’s Lair. Buoyed by the return of former skipper spookism, the Rats were confident taking on the season 34 wooden spoon winners. It was clear very early on, that season 35 was going to be all about okeydoke7 and his march towards 1000 goals, though Ant Bear playing his 300th SFA game did make page 2 of the Sin City Times tabloid newsrag.

The Swamprats made a poor start to the match, missing two regulation shots at goal and conceding two straight at the other end, before Power Raid scored the Rats’ first goal for the season. okeydoke7 and sataris then added majors before the Dragons hit back with three goals inside two minutes to wrestle back the lead. Okey and GotTheGoodes then added goals of their own to see the Rats take back the lead in a topsy turvy first quarter of the season. The quarter time scores were Dragons 5.2 (32) to Swamprats 5.3 (33).

The Rats made a solid start to the second term, adding two more majors before a #VICBIAS free kick against spookism conceded a goal to former Swamprat Hatchy1992. The game then turned into a shootout between Okey and Blaze Storm for the Dragons as both teams decided that defending was overrated. Despite adding five goals for the quarter, the Rats found themselves training 10.3(62) to 11.7 (73).

Three quick goals to the Dragons saw the Rats trail by 29 point at the five minute mark of the third term, before a goal of the year contender by Power Raid clawed back some momentum for the visitors. It was short lived though as the Dragons continued to pile on the scoreboard pressure. okeydoke7 continued to add goals to his team’s tally, but inaccuracy in front of goal threatened to stall the Rats’ comeback. At three quarter time, the visitors were still in the hunt, trailing 13.11 (89) to 16.9 (105).

A dropped mark in defence resulted in the Dragons drawing first blood to start the final term before The Rats hit back care of Grav and the on-fire Okey. The Rats were unable to stop the Dragons scoring freely however, and they continued to score at will, eventually finishing with 20 goals for the match. Final scores were Dragons 20.10 (130) def Swamprats 17.14 (116).

@okeydoke7 ended up with a monster haul of 9.5 while @Grav, @GremioPower and @philreich all had busy days in the midfield.

Round 2 v Royals by jackster83

After disappointing result first up, the Swamprats headed home to take on old foes, the Gold City Royals minus skipper philreich, who was suspended for a teamsheet misdemeanor. Initially the focus was on returned Rat and former Royal spookism, before the inevitable happened and okeydoke7 got rowdy and made it all about him. Disappointingly, no one got my Frontier Psychiatrist reference, but it was still an enjoyable build up to a game that had sold out quicker than a Taylor Qwift concert.

The game got off to a disastrous start for the home team, conceding the first five goals of the game in the first ten minutes. A strong bump by GremioPower won the ball back for the Rats, resulting in a goal to GotTheGoodes. A dropped mark to Kennedy Parker then handed the Royals another before Power Raid converted to bring the margin back down to four goals. At quarter time the Rats were trailing 2.0 (12) to 6.0 (36).

The Royals continued to build a lead early in the second term, as the Rats struggled to get their hands on the qooty ball. The Royals continued to be accurate in front of goals, with nahnah particularly prominent, before a late goal to okey reduced the margin to a little over five goals. The Rats went into the main break trailing 5.0 (30) to 10.2 (62).

Another poor start to a quarter saw the Rats cough up another two goals before a contentious goal umpiring decision saw spookism denied a major. Things rapidly turn sour for the home side, with the Royals getting out to a 59 point lead before RPCB added some respectability before the final break. At three quarter time the Rats were still a long way behind, trailing 6.1 (37) to 14.6 (90).

The Rats players and fans alike decided to hit the bar at the start of the final term, as the Royals continued to pile on the misery. Late goals to Dewyyyyy and Grav were too little, too late as the home side suffered a heavy defeat at home. Final scores were Swamprats 9.2 (56) def by Royals 19.9 (123).

Dewyyyyy (Dominic03) was one of very few winners for the Rats with 20 disposals and 2.0.

Round 3 v Bombers by jackster83

Sitting at 0-2 and the #JusticeforPhilreich movement still being a hot topic of discussions at cafes and strip clubs throughout Sin City, there was an air of tension around the Rats camp for round 3. Another home game presented the chance for the Rats to get on the winners’ board, this time against Baghdad’s 20th most successful sporting franchise. To their credit, the Bombers brought their usual spirited banter, despite the threats that the sprinklers would again be used before the game.

Despite a stirring pre-game address by former Bomber ant555, the Rats again got off to a poor start. The Bombers piled on four quick goals, which became comical when jackster83 kicked it through the wrong goals. The Rats only got on the board late in the quarter after a quality crumb and goal from Ticky009. When the quarter time siren blew, the Rats were already a long way behind, trailing 1.3 (9) to 7.3 (45).

The second term threatened to follow in the same manner, with Ant Bear having a screamer taken on him, and Bombers rookie norway blue adding to the home side’s pain. The Rats then started to fight back, with ant555, okeydoke7 and Ticky all getting busy on the scoreboard. When okey added his fourth for the term, the margin was cut down to four points, before Rats young gun KinderSmock put them in the lead for the first time in the match. The sides traded late goals, with the Bombers holding a slim lead at the main break. Scores were Swamprats 9.8 (62) trailing the Bombers 10.5 (65).

Similarly with the first quarters, the Rats’ third terms had been costing them dearly in the season so far, and this week was no exception. The Bombers continued to apply scoreboard pressure, despite Okey and Ticky adding goals of their own. Struggling to get the qootball past the centre, the Rats needed a boost, which they finally got via ant555 who ran the ball for half of the length of the ground himself before booting the goal. At the last change, the home side was trailing 12.9 (81) to 15.8 (98).

The Bombers scored the first goal of the final term before the interchange players even had the chance to sit down. Kennedy Parker then cut into their lead and attempted to fire up the crowd, and when BloodySwan goaled, the margin was back down to 15 points with just under ten minutes remaining. Bloodyswan goaled again to reduce the margin further and when ant555 goaled after a Bombers defensive half turnover, it was less than a goal the difference. Unfortunately the time clock ran out, denying the Swamprats what would have been an amazing come from behind win. The final score was the Swamprats 17.10 (112) def by Bombers 17.12 (114) in a terrific game of qooty.

okeydoke7 added five goals for the home side, while KinderSmock (34 disposals), philreich (31) and Grav (31) all enjoyed big games.

Round 4 v Phoenix by jackster83

After a devastatingly close loss against the Bombers, the Swamprats were still seeking the first win of their season 35 campaign. The streak of home games continued, this time taking on MP_ and the Phoenix. The Rats players were a bit scattered this week, with several eating away their sorrows at KFC and Red Rooter.

The Rats’ poor starts by now were becoming a regular occurrence with the Phoenix piling on five goals to none for the quarter. Highlights were few and far between, and the quarter time siren blew with the Rats might as well have been sponsored by Qrispy Qreme, trailing 0.0 (0) to 5.1 (31).

The Phoenix quickly added another goal to start the second term, before Kennedy Parker finally broke the Rats’ duck. KinderSmock quickly followed suit with a spectacular running goal, before a fired up sataris added the Rats’ third. A lower scoring term saw the half time siren go with the Rats trailing 3.1 (19) to 6.2 (38).

Another poor start to the third term, saw the Phoenix stretch their lead out to 25 points before GremioPower got on the scoreboard. The Rats controlled much of the play but couldn’t make any further inroads into the deficit. At the final break, the Rats trailed 4.2 (26) to 8.2 (50).

The Rats came out hard to start the final term, with okeydoke7 scoring almost straight away, and should have made it two in two minutes, but he was offline. When philreich goaled, the margin was down to a manageable 10 points. The game was by now a real arm wrestle in the muddy conditions, but when GremioPower added another major, the deficit was down to less than a goal. With the home crowd getting behind them, the Rats continued to surge and it was one of their leaders in BloodySwan who gave them the lead with a terrific goal. The Phoenix had other ideas though, with Itsmyshow adding two quick goals to take back the lead. Okey had a late chance to bring the margin to less than a goal, but in uncharacteristic fashion, he could not convert and the Phoenix hung on to win a nailbiter. Final scores were Sin City 8.6 (54) def by Phoenix 10.4 (64).

GremioPower had a big game in the ruck, while Grav and Dewyyyyy were influential around the ground.

We will now award the Groove Medal, to recognise our leading goal kicker for season 35. No prizes for guessing that the gong goes to okeydoke7, who steered through 51 goals. Pity it wasn't 53, as it would have put the 1000 goal discussion to bed once and for all. But well done to okey on a great season.

A real indictment of our forward line is the fact that the second highest goal scorer was Dominic03 (Dewyyyyy) with 23, and he ain't even playing this season - he's retired. It was basically okey or nobody for much of the season, so hopefully we find several avenues to goal in the season ahead.

Round 5 v Demons by jackster83

By now, at 0-4, things were getting desperate for Sin City’s finest. Fortunately they had one big thing in their favour this week, coming up against a fellow winless side in the Demons. In a curious quirk of the fixture, the Rats were playing their fourth home game in a row. Neither team was confident, though okeydoke7 was reminding everyone of his progress towards 1000 goals. philreich was also pretty buoyant at the news that the Redbacks had won a shield game.

In what was by now becoming an unwanted trademark, the Rats again got off to a poor start, conceding the first seven goals of the game. The Rats’ forwards could barely get a look in as Wosh and co were dominant at the other end. Another goalless quarter saw calls for Qen Hinkley to be sacked growing louder and the Rats trailing 0.3 (3) to 7.5 (47).

Finally, at long last, skipper Philreich gave the home fans something to cheer about, booting the Rats’ first goal two minutes into the second term. A long bomb to GotTheGoodes awoke the crowd from their slumber, which was partially caused by MWPP drip feeding the game slower than a press conference with the head of the Reserve Bank. Okey finally got onto the scoreboard, while HirdsTheWord had two missed shots on goal before finally converting on his third attempt. The Rats had failed to make significant inroads into the margin, and when the half time siren went, they still trailed 4.5 (29) to 9.7 (61).

Hoping to address the team’s lousy third quarters, skipper Philreich promised to buy the team ice cream if they won the quarter. Leading by example, he booted the first of the third term, before KinderSmock added his name to the scorer’s list. When Dewyyyyy added his first in a terrific solo effort, the margin was cut down to just 10 points. The game became an arm wrestle with both teams not troubling the scorers for a period, before the veteran Swamprat ant555 goaled to bring the margin back down to three points. The three quarter time siren went with the Rats trailing 8.10 (58) to 9.7 (61).

The Demons drew first blood of the final term care of Greenery, before Dewwwy added one and then another to give the Rats the lead. By now the tension was rising and the crowd was getting involved. The Demons weren’t done with yet however, and Hate coolly converted to give them back the lead. Kindersmock replied for the home side, before Philreich leveled the scores with his third goal. Ant555 and GremioPower scored to give the Rats a slender buffer, before crowd favourite Okeydoke7 goaled to extend the lead to 20 points. Another late charge by the Demons brought the margin back down to eight points, before ant555 sealed the game with his third goal. The siren went with the Rats registering their first victory for season 35, winning 16.12 (108) to 14.10 (94).

philreich, ant555 and Dewyyyyy shared the scoring with three goals apiece, while GremioPower had a huge game in the ruck. Firestarter was also influential around the ground.

Round 6 v Roys by jackster83

After a tough start to the year, the Swamprats were finally on the winners’ board. The burning effigies of philreich and the leadership group had disappeared, even if talk of a coach sacking was still doing the rounds. After a month at home, the Rats were back on the road, this time up against the Roys. Things got a little spicy early when young firebrand Dewyyyyy caught the ire of TedDougChris and the Roys.

For once the Rats didn’t concede a bag of unanswered goals to start the game. While they did concede three fairly early goals, at least they were also scoring themselves. okeydoke7 got his name in the paper with two early goals, before jackster83 missed an absolute soda. A low scoring quarter saw the Roys go in with a small lead at the first change, ahead 3.1 (19) to Sin City 2.2 (14).

The Roys added their fourth goal early on in the second term, before Okey kicked a third goal to keep the visitors in touch. The game continued to ebb and flow, before a long bomb from Philreich dragged the Rats to within five points. The half time siren went with the Roys leading 5.4 (34) to 4.2 (26).

Mooch extended the Roys’ lead early in the third term, before Okey responded with his fourth goal. The Roys edged away with two quick goals in reply, before Okey then added his fifth (out of the Rats’ six goals). Philreich then disrupted the Okey show with a goal of his own, before Dewyyy goaled to bring the margin down to a solitary point. Again the Roys responded however, and by three quarter time they led 10.5 (65) to 8.4 (52).

It took nearly eight minutes for a team to score in the final term, but it was the Roys who eventually kicked another major. Some nice link up play by Grav and ant555 followed, with the latter eventually kicking the goal. Trailing by 13 points, Okey tried to be the hero, but missed three shots in succession, much to his utter disbelief. He finally converted with his fourth attempt in ten minutes but unfortunately the Rats’ charge was thwarted by the clock (not for the first time in the season). The final score was Roys 12.7 (79) def Sin City 11.8 (74).

Despite the late misses, okeydoke7 was the star for the Rats with 6.3, while GremioPower had another strong game in the ruck.

Round 7 v Bears by philreich

We entered this away clash with the Bears sitting at 1-5, so we were desperate for a win to keep our season alive. The Bears had given us some fearful floggings in recent times, so it’d be nice to get one back on them!!!

We started strongly, scoring 4 goals to 2, to go into the first change with a 9 point lead.

¼ time: Bears 2:4 (16) to Swamprats 4:1 (25)

The goal kicking was a bit wayward in the second quarter – we booted 3:5. But we still went into half time with a 12 point lead.

½ time: Bears 5:6 (36) to Swamprats 7:6 (48)

Another very even quarter in the premiership term, with both teams scoring 3 goals. We turned for home with a 13 point lead.

¾ time: Bears 8:7 (55) to Swamprats 10:8 (68)

We kicked the first 3 goals of the last quarter, to get the lead out to a game high 33 points. We cruised a little from there – the Bears were able to score 5 goals, but we still managed to finish the game 14 points in front.

Full time: Bears 13:8 (86) to Swamprats 15:10 (100)

The stars of the show for us were spookism with 38 touches and 8 marks, and GremioPower with 31 touches and 14 hit outs.

Was our season sort of back on track? Another away clash with the Wonders would soon provide the answer.
