Round 4 vs Dragons FFC @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by Philreich

This was the sort of game you’d make your mother in law watch if you don’t like her – it never reached any great heights. We were finally playing at home, but could we make that advantage count?

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, our early wayward goal kicking was evident again. We had double the number of scoring shots, but trailed at the first change.

¼ time: Swamprats 1:3 (9) to Dragons 2:0 (12)

We hit back in the second quarter, which we won narrowly. We took a slender lead into half time.

Half time: Swamprats 4:5 (29) to Dragons 4:3 (27)

The third quarter netted just 2 goals, and unfortunately we didn’t kick either of them. As a result, we turned for home, trailing by 11 points.

¾ time: Swamprats 4:7 (31) to Dragons 6:6 (42)

We scored 2 goals in the last, but unfortunately, so did they. It meant a 13 point loss, and a 1-3 record after 4 games. Our season was on life support!!!

Full time: Swamprats 6:7 (43) to Dragons 8:8 (56)

Round 5 vs Warriors @ Van Cordlandt Park
Match Report by Philreich

We arrived at Warriorville, knowing that another loss would leave a severe dent in our finals aspirations. Of course knowing something, and being able to carry out that plan are sometimes 2 very different things, as The Filth Wizard chose this game to create a bit of history!!!

We started OK, ramming home 4 goals – the only trouble was, the opposition answered with 7 of their own.

¼ time Warriors 7:2 (44) to Swamprats 4:2 (26)

I don’t want to spend too much time talking about what happened in the second quarter – let’s just say that we were a part of history, after conceding one of the highest first half totals in history.

½ time Warriors 19:4 (118) to Swamprats 9:2 (56)

Down by 62 points at half time, all we could do in the second half was play for a bit of pride. We won the third quarter narrowly, but the margin was still almost as ugly as Julia Gillard in a bikini, with a quarter to play.

¾ time Warriors 23:5 (143) to Swamprats 14:5 (89)

Thankfully a repeat of the second quarter was avoided, but the final margin was still 68 points. Yours truly, Power Raid and Kennedy Parker shared 10 goals between us, but it was still 2 less than Filthy managed off his own boot. Time to quickly forget this one, and focus on making amends against the Roys a week later.

Full time Warriors 28:8 (176) to Swamprats 17:6 (108)

Round 6 vs Roys @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by Philreich

The home crowd was in a sombre mood before this one – if we couldn’t beat the Roys, it was more or less season over. How would we respond?

This was a very different Rats team for the one that didn’t show up a week earlier. We were out of the blocks in a flash – thankfully helped by wayward goal kicking from the opposition.

¼ time Swamprats 6:1 (37) to Roys 1:5 (11)

We kept the foot on the throat in the second quarter, ramming home another 6 goals. Remarkably we went into the long break, leading by 44 points, and the commentators were suggesting that we were on some sort of performance enhancing drugs – how could a team that had been so ordinary against the Warriors be so dominant, just 7 days later?

½ time Swamprats 12:3 (75) to Roys 4:7 (31)

With the 4 points virtually sewn up, we took the foot off the gas slightly in the third quarter. However we still led by 38 points with a quarter to play.

¾ time Swamprats 15:5 (95) to Roys 8:9 (57)

Pleasingly, we finished the game with another 5 goals, to run out convincing winners by 48 points. The skipper was heard to say after the game, “Why can’t we play the Roys every week?”

Full time Swamprats 20:7 (127) to Roys 11:13 (79)

Round 7 vs Gold City Royals @ Golden Throne
Match Report by jackster83

After a strong response in round 6 against the Roys, the Rats were hoping for consecutive wins for the first time this season as they headed to the Golden Throne to take on the Royals. Former skipper and new FF philreich was up and about early as he celebrated 40 years of being funded by the taxpayer, while Firestarter was at his fiery best.

The game started in explosive fashion with new Swamprats CHB okeydoke7 cleaned up. Despite his protests to the skipper, he was not moved back to his old FF position. Some solid body work by Power Raid set Kennedy Parker up to open the scoring for the Rats. The Royals hit back with three consecutive goals of their own, before GotTheGoodes and Philreich helped level things back up. Rodney Dangerfield copped a nasty bump late that resulted in a goal to the Royals, but coach Qen Hinkley stopped the doctor going out to do a concussion test. At quarter time the Royals were leading 4.1 (25) to 3.1 (19).

The second quarter started with a tussle between ex-team mates GotTheGoodes and SarahSmiles, which saw the former come off better and a goal to Firestarter resulted, which leveled the scores. When Philreich added his second, the Rats were 8 points up. The Royals briefly hit back before three consecutive goals to the visitors saw the Rats start to build a lead. The Royals hit back late, but some bad misses meant they could not make a serious dent into the lead. Scores were Swamprats 8.4 (52) to Royals 6.3 (39).

The home side kicked the first of the third term before the spectators had even gotten back to their seats with their beers. Firestarter added another, but the Rats were starting to miss some gettable shots. It took the experience of Philreich to consolidate before Jewelsbon added her first. Okeydok7 was controlling things in the back half, and ant555 was having a good quarter, also getting involved on the scoreboard to put the Rats 30 points up. Two late goals to the Royals cut the margin down, but the Rats still had a three goal buffer, leading 13.10 (88) to 11.4 (70).

The Rats backline was under serious pressure to start the final term, but was holding up well. Eventually they got it forward thanks to HirdsTheWord, before GotTheGoodes kicked a brilliant goal. Okey was continuing to hold things together in the backline and when Philreich and Shuestar13 goaled, the margin was out to a game high 35 points. The Royals didn’t stop fighting, but were unable to make any ground against a determined Sin City outfit.

Final scores were Swamprats 17.11 (113) to Royals 12.9 (81).

Round 8 vs Las Vegas Bears @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by jackster83

With two wins on the trot, the rejuvenated Swamprats were looking to make it a rat-trick at home against the Bears. Interestingly, the ledger between the two sides was currently sitting at 18 wins apiece. The Bears, under the leadership of legitimate businessman tony were not going to make it easy though, having made a strong start to the season themselves.

The early stages of the game were a tough watch as both teams could not get the qootball past their half forward line, but it was the Bears who scored the first six pointer. GotTheGoodes then took it upon himself to get the Rats going, scoring a goal from the center circle in a stunning solo effort. It worked as the Rats scored four more goals in quick succession. By the first break the Rats had established a solid lead, leading 5.2 (32) to 1.1 (7).

A fired up paraaaa scored the opening goal of the second term, before the Bears needing a lift, got it via a terrible turnover from the Rats’ skipper. Two more quick goals followed, before the Rats responded through Power Raid. The Bears were fighting hard in the midfield, but were unable to make serious inroads into the deficit. At half time the Rats were leading 8.2 (50) to 5.4 (34).

The Bears were attacking early in the third term but could not convert, and it was Jewelsbon who made them pay, scoring her second for the game. The Bears were ringing the changes, but it did little to slow the Rats down, with paraaaa again extending the lead. Consecutive goals to the Bears late in the term gave them some hope, with them trailing 8.8 (56) to 11.5 (71).

Some early missed chances on goal to start the final term had the home crowd getting restless, before the Bears then scored courtesy of a free kick from point blank range. A nice intercept by Shuestar13 led to a goal by the vice captain BloodySwan. The Bears would not go away though, and when MWPP goaled in the latter stages of the quarter, the lead was down to just two points. Some more missed chances at goal had the Rats’ faithful biting their nails, before a classy finish from spookism calmed their nerves slightly. Another free kick in front of goal to the Bears brought the margin to under a kick, but the Rats were saved by the siren.

Final scores were Swamprats 13.11 (89) to Bears 12.12 (84).

Round 9 vs Olphidian Old Boys @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by jackster83

Coming off a nail biting win against the Bears, the Swamprats next clash against the wayward OOB’s was deemed to be the MOTR as they looked to bring up their fourth straight win. The Old Boys started the week by placing rat traps in sneaky locations, however they were unsuccessful. Firestarter was up and about, which gave the Rats supporters a bad feeling about this game: so much so that it resulted in the resignation of Dan Andrews.

A slow and error riddled start by both teams saw very little work for the goal umpires until 11 minutes in when the visitors finally drew first blood. The Rats quickly hit back via a fantastic goal from ex-skipper philreich, before jackster83 and GotTheGoodes combined to give the home side the lead. spookism had two chances to push out the lead, but could only trouble the scorers for a minor score in both occasions, before Kennedy Parker joined the party with a long goal on the run. The Old Boys finished the quarter strongly, with three quick goals giving them the lead. Quarter time scores were the Swamprats 3.2 (20) trailing the Old Boys 4.3 (27).

The Rats were the first to hit the scoreboard early in the second term, as a result of a defensive half turnover by the Old Boys. The Rats then conceded a goal after some strong defensive pressure from Bonz resulted in a turnover in the goalsquare. The pattern of defensive half turnovers continued, with Kennedy Parker capitalizing again for the home side. Moments later, Philreich capitalized on a deliberate out of bounds call to level the scores. The Old Boys started to gain the ascendency late in the quarter as they did in the first, going in to half time in front 8.4 (52) to the Swamprats 6.4(40).

The Rats got off to a perfect start in the third term, with Philreich on the end of some slick forward line ball movement. Less than two minutes later he scored again, which caused the crowd to start finding their voice as the scores were leveled. The Old Boys responded with a major of their own, before Ticky009 put the Rats in front in the 12th minute. Former Swamprats wingman haydo wrestled the lead back for the Old Boys before two more goals from Philreich and one from Firestarter saw the Rats get out to a 14 point lead. The Old Boys tried to rally late in the term but were only able to add one more goal to their tally. At three quarter time, the Rats led 12.6 (78) to 11.4 (70).

The final term started as an arm wrestle with neither team hitting the scoreboard until Rats rookie Shuestar13 kicked a spectacular goal on the run. The Rats had all the momentum, and further goals to Ticky009 and ant555 saw the margin extend out to 27 points. The Old Boys were dogged if nothing though, and kept fighting, eventually scoring the last three goals of the game. The Swamprats held on for their fourth straight win.

Final scores were Swamprats 16.8 (104) to Old Boys 15.7 (97).

Round 11 vs Fighting Furies @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by jackster83

Coming off a four match winning streak, and hung over refreshed after the bye, the Swamprats were ready to make it five straight wins against the hapless Furies. The Furies themselves were more interested in getting autographs from Jewelsbon than the game in the lead up. All the while Australia were still yet to win a game at the cricket world cup (and we know how that turned out). The Rats were quick to post an unchanged line up, which came as a surprise to no one.

The Furies were the first to hit the scoreboard, care of former Swamprat ShaunDuggan, before ex-skipper philreich responded for the home side. Crowd favourite Firestarter got them up and about with two goals on the run in the space of a minute. The Furies then hit back, leveling the scores, which were tied at 3.2 (20 each at quarter time.

The Furies were on top early in the second term, peppering the goals. Fortunately for the home side, they could not convert their opportunities. The Rats then steadied after Jewelsbon sold some candy and added a major. The Furies then clawed back the lead with two goals of their own, before Philreich added his second for the match. A long stretch between scores ensued, with both sides making errors while attempting to move the ball forward, before Rats rookie Shuestar13 kicked truly from long range to give the Rats back the lead. At half time, the Rats held a narrow 6.2 (38) to 5.6 (36) lead.

The low-scoring arm wrestle continued early in the third term with both sides struggling to get the ball with time and space. After a tick over eight minutes, it was the Furies who hit the lead. They added another before vice captain BloodySwan bounced through a running shot at goal. A great intercept at half back by Shuestar13 led to Kennedy Parker giving the Rats back the lead. It was short lived however, as the Furies slammed on two goals of their own, inciting the crowd in the process. A late goal to Philreich saw the Rats narrow the deficit to three points, trailing 9.3 (57) to 9.6 (60).

The air was thick with tension to start the final term, and again the game descended into a slogfest. The Rats were unable to convert their chances, before the Furies responded with another goal of their own. Firestarter narrowed the margin to just two points before The Jesus gave the home side the lead. Bloodyswan eventually kicked the sealer to make it five wins on the trot for the Swamprats.

Final scores were Swamprats 12.6 (78) to Furies 10.7 (67).

Qualifying Final vs Gumbies FFC @ House of Gumby
Match Report by jackster83

After sneaking into fourth spot and securing the double chance, the Rats were aware they were up against it in the first week of finals against a rampant Gumbies side that had cruised to the minor premiership. The Gumbies pretended to be worried about straight sets and choking, but everyone could see through it. The Rats also faced the dilemma of choosing who to use at full forward. Eventually it was settled to go with the season’s leading goalkicker in philreich, much to the chagrin of the okeydoke7 cheersquad.

The Gumbies got off to a flier, scoring the first goal in little over a minute, after a strong contested grab at CHF. The Rats quickly responded, after The Jesus set the skipper up with a classy handball. The Rats then comprehensively won the next centre clearance, with vice captain BloodySwan on the end of some textbook work out of the middle to put the Rats up by a goal. The swap was then made to put edgie up forward after Philreich stubbed his toe or something along those lines. Firestarter and edgie each added goals, but it was the Gumbies who set about establishing a lead, booting the last four goals of the quarter. At the first break the Gumbies led 6.2 (38) to 4.1 (25).

The Gumbies then repeated the start of the first term with a goal within the first two minutes to start the second quarter. The veteran Power Raid then got involved with two possessions in a chain of play to set up ant555. The Rats were unable to make much headway in to the deficit, though they were gradually coming back courtesy of two more goals to edgie, who was becoming a factor, and the skipper jackster83. At half time the Gumbies still had a 13 point buffer, leading 10.4 (64) to 8.3 (51).

The Rats again came out slow in the third term, as the Gumbies twice goaled to extend the lead to 25 points. Firestarter converted on the run to reduce the margin, and after a brief lull in scoring, edgie added his fourth goal to bring it back to the half time deficit. They were unable to make further headway though, as the Gumbies responded, to go into the final break with a 13.7 (85) to 10.4 (64) lead.

As was becoming habit, the Gumbies drew first blood in the final term. Needing a spark, the Rats got it through edgie, who added his 5th goal in a stunning finals performance to cut the margin down to 22 points. Unfortunately that was as close as they got, as the Gumbies ran away with it. Not even consolation goals from Firestarter and Kennedy Parker could cheer up the visitors as they succumbed to a comprehensive 44 point loss. Final score was Gumbies 18.9 (117) to Swamprats 13.5 (83).

Semi Final vs Mount Buller Demons @ Underground Stadium
Match Report by jackster83

After a disappointing showing in the first week of finals, the Swamprats were back in home surroundings for their sudden death semi final against the Demons. The Demons hit the match thread on the Monday with all guns blazing, with an assault usually reserved for a charcuterie board. It really was something. Tickets sold out in three and a half minutes with GremioPower “acquiring” 500 tickets for his fan club who were flying in from South America.

The Swamprats won the first clearance of the game, courtesy of Kennedy Parker. Some fine work by Power Raid set philreich up for the first goal of the game. The Demons quickly responded, before the Rats again started to build a lead with four goals in four minutes. GotTheGoodes was in everything early as the Rats got out to a 24 point lead. Again though, the Demons hit back with four straight goals of their own (with both sides being extremely accurate), before a brilliant solo effort from Jewelsbon gave the Rats a small buffer at quarter time. Scores were 6.1 (37) to 5.0 (30).

The second term started with some fierce contests in the middle, before The Jesus intercepted beautifully, and set up an attacking thrust that resulted in a goal to GremioPower. The home side was starting to gain ascendency and when edgie goaled, the margin was out to 27 points. The Demons then responded with a quick goal, but any semblance of momentum was quickly crushed by GremioPower and edgie. Skipper jackster83 scored a huge goal from the centre late in the quarter, which brought the house down. At half time the crowd were in raptures, as the Rats were leading 12.5 (77) to 6.2 (38).

Surely we couldn’t lose from here? Surely…

The third quarter started with the Rats momentum continuing, albeit without the accuracy of the first half. Nonetheless GremioPower split the middle to make it a 47 point margin. The Demons needed a spark and they found it courtesy of a run down tackle from Gralin, which resulted in a goal. Gralin again got involved to see the Demons add another. The margin was still 35 points, so no one was overly concerned just yet. Two more rapid fire goals to the Demons and suddenly the lead wasn’t looking insurmountable. Some poor defensive turnovers were creeping in as the pressure started to build on the home side. By three quarter time, the Demons had scored seven consecutive goals to reduce the margin to only three points. Scores were Swamprats 13.8 (86) to Demons 13.5 (83).

It didn’t take long for the Demons to go forward again early in the final term. A free in the goalsquare against Rodney Dangerfield, saw the Demons take the lead, despite the howls of protest from the incensed crowd. By now the Demons had eight straight goals, and when they quickly added two more, the Rats were on the ropes. Tarkyn_24 was unstoppable despite the best efforts of Rodders, and it became a procession. In the words of the skipper, “they literally could not ******* miss”. GremioPower added his fourth goal, but by now the damage was done, and the Rats’ season came to a crashing finish, going out in straight sets. Final scores were 14.13 (97) to 19.7 (121).
