Time for another installment of #ratstats.

This time it was the OOB's turn to fall victim to the unstoppable Swamprats juggernaut, as we brought up four wins on the trot.

The #ratrun will have to pause for a week as we face North Melbourne the bye.

Time for the latest installment of #ratstats.

We are now known as the Sin City Swwwwwamprats after our fifth win in succession, this time over the hapless Furies.

Time for another installment of #ratstats.

An absolute nail biter against the checks notes Wonders saw us go down in controversial circumstances after a late goal was not recorded in the sim.

Next opponent: Gumbies (A)

#ratstats time.

A reasonable start against the Gumbies was blown away after we conceded 10 goals in the second term. We were never really in it after half time.

philreich continues to show strong form at FF, while paraaaa is showing strong form in the reserves.

Next up: Roys (A) in Heritage Round.

Time for another edition of #ratstats.

In heritage round, the Rats held on for a thrilling win over the Roys. okeydoke7 was the star with 7 goals.

Next: Bye and then Warriors (H)

Time for another edition of #ratstats!

A hard fought win against the Warriors saw the Rats not just qualify for finals, but also earn a double chance.

The 250 gamer Kennedy Parker booted three goals, while Rodney Dangerfield played a crucial role against Filthy.

Congratulations on a great season guys, thought you would have struggled without me 🫢 but look how better you’ve fared.🥴
Would be good if you & Bombers do it the hard way & both make it to the GF.
Good luck guys, you’re a good bunch. 👍

Time for a belated edition of #ratstats.

A tough day at the office in our qualifying final against the Gumbies. The pricks kept us at arm's length for most of the game.

1700829937330.png

A very tough day at the office for former skipper and full forward philreich.

Time to hit back in our home semi final against the Demons.

#ratstats time and unfortunately this will be the last edition for 2023 as the Rats were eliminated from the finals series.

A strong first half saw the Rats get out to a 47 point lead early in the third term before the Rats channeled their inner Roys, coughing up a huge lead to go down by 24 points and go out of the finals in straight sets.

Even more unfortunate is that coach Qen Hinkley had signed a contract extension just on the verge of finals.

Hello all and welcome to what should be a fun filled evening, as we celebrate the ups and downs of the season that was. We are only a few moments away from getting the Best and Fairest (named in honour of legendary Swamprats and Bay 13 figure Toots Hibbert) underway. There certainly were plenty of highlights although we did not go as far into the finals as we would have liked.

Just a word of warning to watch out for your wallets, especially once a few of the younger Rats get on the sauce and want some loose change to go to MaQdonalds across the road.

Before we get underway, I'd like to raise a toast to the other members of the leadership group for season 36. Being a relatively small LG, they carried a heavy workload.

BloodySwan our fearless vice captain
philreich the former skipper and powerhouse of match threads (and dad jokes)
okeydoke7 the heavy hitter

Round 1 vs Mount Buller Demons @ Snow Dome
Match Report by Philreich

We started the new season against the team we handed the wooden spoon to in S35, so they would have had revenge on their minds. We also had a new skipper, so there was no risk of philreich stuffing up another team sheet. :)

We began promisingly against the Dees. We had 11 shots in the first quarter to their 7, but the problem was we couldn’t kick straight, and we therefor trailed by a point at the first change.

¼ time: Demons 6:1 (37) to Swamprats 5:6 (36)

The home team got on top in the second stanza, registering 5 goals to 2. That 1 point quarter time deficit was now 21 points at the long break, and things weren’t looking great.

½ time Demons 11:4 (70) to Swamprats 7:7 (49)

The premiership quarter was more competitive, but we failed to make any inroads into the half time deficit, and in fact trailed by an even 5 goals with a quarter to play.

¾ time Demons 16:8 (104) to Swamprats 11:8 (74)

Unfortunately the run home was embarrassing, and the coach would have been quite within his rights to actually make us run home, instead of taking the bus. We clearly came out with just 1 goal in mind, because that’s all we kicked.

Full time Demons 22:9 (141) to Swamprats 12:9 (81)

Nobody scored more than 2 goals, in a forgettable day for the club.

Round 2 vs Baghdad Bombers @ Abdu Prison
Match Report by Philreich

We headed to Abdu Prison, hoping to square the ledger at 1-1 after 2 games. After a recent dominance against the Bombers, they’d beaten us in more recent contests, so it’d be nice to get one back on them!!!

Unfortunately our only scorer in the first quarter was okeydoke7, and he could only register a behind. So being 6 goals down at the first change wasn’t part of the plan.

¼ time: Bombers 6:1 (37) to Swamprats 0:1 (1)

We won the second quarter fairly convincingly, our return of 5:4 for the quarter needed to be 8:1 or better, in order to get back into the game (plus the opposition simply couldn’t miss!!!. We still trailed by 27 points at the main break.

¼ time: Bombers 10:2 (62) to Swamprats 5:5 (35)

We won the third quarter marginally, but it was still a yawnfest. That first quarter had done all the damage, and we simply couldn’t bridge the gap enough to give ourselves a proper chance.

¾ time: Bombers 13:4 (82) to Swamprats 9:6 (60)

For the second week in a row, we could only manage a single goal in the last quarter, so we went down comfortably by 29 points. At least okey finally registered his 1000th goal……

Full time: Bombers 15:6 (96) to Swamprats 10:7 (67)

Round 3 vs East Side Phoenix @ The Eyrie
Match Report by Philreich

Yet another away game – by now, many of our players had probably forgotten what a home game felt like!!! We were now in must win territory, because another loss would make finals highly unlikely.

It was a tight first quarter. We should have been in front at the first change, but once again, wayward goal kicking plagued our forward line.

¼ time: Phoenix 3:2 (20) to Swamprats 2:5 (17)

The second quarter was much better. we kept the opposition to just 2 scoring shots (unfortunately both were goals!!!), while we piled on 4 goals of our own. It allowed us to take an 11 point lead into the long break.

¼ time: Phoenix 5:2 (32) to Swamprats 6:7 (43)

The teams couldn’t be separated in the premiership quarter, as it was 3:3 each. We turned for home with the same lead as we’d held at half time (funny how that works…..)

¾ time: Phoenix 8:5 (53) to Swamprats 9:10 (64)

The final quarter was a heart stopper. The Phoenix hit the front by a point, with a few minutes remaining, but thankfully Jewelsbon stepped up to slot the winner in the final minute. We managed to hold on in a 5 point thriller!!!

Full time: Phoenix 12:6 (78) to Swamprats 12:11 (83)

We were finally on the board – could we back it up and square the ledger in round 4?

Reserves Team Results

The Alberton Swamprats participated in the inaugural season of the Spam FL and finished in 8th spot at the end of the minor round, just sneaking into the finals. Unfortunately, despite a monster game from Jewelsbon in the ruck, they were comprehensively beaten in the elimination final by the Baghdad Bandits over at Abdu Prison.
