Plenty of people I know are becoming disenchanted with football.

Most of us still watch and attend games. However there isn't the enjoyment and passion that once existed.

It seems everyone in football takes it way to serious. At the end of the day its a game, and we are there to watch and enjoy what happens on field.

The Hird incident was a good example. Yeah the bloke said the wrong thing and should have copped a whack for it. But reading the papers and listening to the AFL, you would have thought he had killed someone. Its time to get the perspective back.

Part of the change in focus I blame in part on the reporting. So often what we read from Wilson Smith etc is the off field issues. Lets start to focus the attention back to that which we are all interested in - on field.

Of course the irony is that its media "shows " like TFS that feed off the game like parasites that are creating most of this frenzy.

All entertainers and media personalities are now under scrutiny 100% of the time and while this rubbish sells papers or TV ads it will continue become more rampant.

I personally prefer the modern game (having played the game and watched it for over 40 years) apart from all the stoppages the game is more exciting and highly skilled compared to 20 years back.
Just tune into the 1980s replays of The Winners on Fox footy and you will be amazed at the difference.
No matter what happens off the field by wannabees Australian Football is still the Greatest Game of ALL!

Isnt Sam the guy, who during an interview with Jude Bolton, asked nothing but questions about his girlfriend, The same guy who relentlesly asks John Elliot about selling his house, the same guy who bleats for 10 minutes about an umpire's posture and running style, the same guy who at every opportunity 'beats up' all the off field c r a p that has nothing to do with football. But now he's got a problem with it?.

I find that you can tolerate loads more rubbish if your team happens to be on the winners list.

My guess would be that the ones bored and angry with the peripheral rubbish (and there is a tonne of that) happen to be Geelong, Richmond, Dogs, Collingwood and Crows fans.

GO SWANNIES!

Soon as the Swans have a loss, watch me jump on the whingers bandwagon

:D

The Host and Co-Host of The Footy show are the biggest offenders for carrying on about crap...Eddie is the biggest sook of all time and if Sam wants to whinge about the big Beat Ups in footy then he needs to turn to his right every Thursday night and tell the most powerful man in football to shut the hell up and just host

Sam Newman is a relic who has nothing but overly simplistic solutions for everything.

You can almost predict what he is going to say on any issue

If colluding is ok and lying at the tribunal is ok then why not change the rules so virtually nothing is illegal, as allowing people to escape with no punishment for breaking rules is tacit acceptance that the rules should not be there

Never mind the fact that if you are unlucky yenough to get caught on video you will get suspsended but if the charge relies on player's testimony you will get off because players lie.

A new culture of truth needs to be created.

The game itself will always sell itself because its so entertaining

When you go to see your team play, the last thing on your mind is salary cap concessions or tribunal colluding and you are only insterested in the on-field action in the greatest game in the world

This doesn't meam however that we shouldn't try to get things right off the field.

Encouraging people to obey the rules and supporting honesty rather than deceit would be a good start.

That's because unlike some others we are intelligent enough to know that last night was a pre-meditated beat up-again. The Footy Show has fallen victim to trying to top its' last performance every week and now has to stage weak stunts to try and generate controversy. There was no James Hird this week, but they still harped on that dead horse with Gavin Dore. The Lions wouldn't talk to the Footy Show as they know that the host was rubbing himself under the table with glee about the fines. The "big" story was the collusion at the tribunal, which is not a big story at all because this happens every time a player goes to the tribunal anyway. The two clubs were just unlucky that the AFL seems to believe that controversy is bringing people through the gates. Andrew Demetriou will go down in history as the worst CEO of the AFL ever and will be remembered as the guy who finally labelled football as business and not sport.

I used to love watching the Footy Show and watching the banter about SA vs VIC etc., but now it doesn't have any appeal at all as it is not spontaneous or even mildly amusing. I think it is time to go back to talking about footy and not about all the peripheral garbage that has dominated the AFL. People will lose patience with this and the figures won't be so encouraging next year. I think there are bigger problems like why the Bulldogs can only scrape up 17,000 members, why the umpiring is sub-standard despite the so-called professionalism, why the Channel 9/10 coverage of AFL is stil;l so far below the standard of 7 etc. etc.

I follow my team that it it. I used to watch every game I could, read as much as I could but not anymore. Most of the time I watch a movie and just check scores during the ads, lets face it you don't miss much.

All I want to see is good, fair footy run professionaly. I do not care about social programs, role models and whatever other crap the AFL spouts. People are just looking for someone else to shoulder their responsibilites.

Instead of this crap the AFL should be looking at the big issues such as; standard of umpiring, struggling clubs and how to fix them, inconsistency at the tribunal, the cost of going to the game, allcoation of GF tickets.

Sure sign that they have too much money, AFL is heading for a crisis of some form, it is the natural order of things.

I agree with all you have said, does that make me an intelligent Victorian?
BTW Are you saying all South Australians are intelligent?

1st point.

Contrived, contrived, contrived.

Why was NR there in the 1st place?

2nd point.

People have be complaining about the negativity thats creeping into the game. Where is this negativity coming from. My answer is Channel 9.

I am sure plenty of people remember League Teams. It was the start of the new football week. It was simple, and of course things have evolved since then. But one thing it did was get the excitement going for the weekend of footy ahead. Now we have TFS, which is the start of the football week. For the last few years, after watching this show, it certainly hasnt welled the excitement in me and increased my expectation for a weekend of football. Week by week it is becoming more negative, more contrived, and full of agenda driven crap.

So why do I watch it. I dont know. The only reason I can see is that like most football lovers, ecspecially from the football states, I am drawn to all things football.

With the AFL going forward, and year by year increasing its supporter base nationally, why is TFS going backwards.

Shane Crawford's tongue in cheek interview with EM, on street talk, summed it up perfectly for me. These players are becoming owned by Channel 9 and its face of football, EM.

So I ask. Is it only my perception, or is there more negativity coming into our great game. If, so then where is this coming from and how can we get rid of it.?

Good point!! You must be intelligent if you agree with me:D
Having lived in both SA and VIC for almost equal time, I think that my statement about intelligence may have been somewhat misleading. Fair to say that I don't really distinguish between the two other than when responding to a xenophobic Victorian or South Australian for that matter. As I said in my post, I actually used to enjoy the SA vs VIC thing as long as it's done in good humour on both sides. It appears that TFS has gone from a vehicle to bag SA, to a vehicle to bag C7 with comments like "with channel 7's two cameras and a box brownie" etc. It's fine for 9 to brag about their number of cameras and technology etc. but this "over coverage" is what is helping to kill the interest. Focus on footy and banter between opposition supporters and ye will cometh.

Some things are over analysed.

Crawford flicks Darcys waisteband and Darcy bends over. Took 1.5 secons yer there is 1.5 days of airtime discussing it.

For 2 days it was "how stupid was craford to hurt him" then find he's not hurt at all and 'should we have rules to stop playrs acin like Darcy"

The umpires are maligned but the one here that day probably saw it and saw it was a load of rot.

Had enough of the Footy Show.
Too many stunts, not enough laughs.
What the hell is Hank Bulger MD supposed to be? unfunny, yes.
League Teams on Fox Footy is much better, only coz they talk about the games and Barnsey annoys Mike Shehan.

I'm sick of all the bull****. TFS used to be a preview of the weekends matches / teams and some laughs with players.

now the players that they have on are robots (even more so after j hird ****ed up on air) on one big infomercial.

Did Mike Sheahan smile last night? I think I might have caught a hint of a smile after Huddo announced that Brisbane and Hawthorn were playing for the Rodney Eade smashed telephone.

Whats the bet that come monday, either in the Hun, Age, or Aussieralian we see Sheehan and co.. basically paraphrase this thread into their own astute and in-touch observations?

I'd put a tenner on it

I think the problem is that many of the journos these days have other gigs on either the radio or television or sometimes both.

Therefore it is in their interest to drum up these non issues so they can have something 'new' to talk about in whatever role comes up next.

We then see the most trivialised incidents become major because Mike, Patrick etc cannot talk about the same subject on their various gigs - They would soon be asked by their employer - what use are you when you said the same thing in the paper.

So they need something different to talk about, they usually come to the same conclusion and instead of it being a one column story in one paper, it becomes a one column story in 3 papers. Other media pick this up, run with it and all of a sudden we have an issue out of control.

There needs to be some paring down. I know these guys want to make as much money as possible but all its doing is diluting the quality of journalism and not letting new faces in.

Unfortunatly i was on the 'phone last nite[ 1+30hrs],missed most of TFS.Did Newman return or not?.
