As much as i cant stand him, he is a great player. Wonder if Wayne Carey still thinks he wouldn't get a game at any other club.

PS Thanks for that 50 metre penalty in the 2012 gf

Mitchell! He's too slow, he's too short, and he's rotund as well. Despite that he is an absolute champion, who just keeps finding the ball and setting Hawthorn up.

I remember the sceptical reaction 10 years ago when Mick Malthouse said that Mitchell was in the same league as Greg Williams. Time has proven Malthouse correct over and over again. I just wish that he had played for the Pies.

Congratulations on a wonderful career.

The list of greatest Hawks ever is :
1.Matthews
2.Hudson
3.Dunstall
4.Mitchell

Creates time and space when there is none. Tough as nails, was originally called "the extractor" because he kept winning contested possessions and creating clearances. Whenever he gets it, he disposes it to a Hawk player in a better position, and does this time after time. He's the player any other Hawk player handballs to if they're under pressure, and Mitchell evades the oncoming tackles like a fly.

What a player.

I still remember that match clearly. It was 2005 and we were rubbish. Collingwood were easily the better side and won by five goals. Mick spent most of his press conference talking about Mitchell because he had 39 disposals and 18 clearances :drunk:.

I don't like how the media seem to rate Hodge ahead of him when its clear that Mitchell has been the better player for longer. He is one of the best Hawthorn players in history and one of the best mids in history.

Agreed. Hodge is a pretty good player, but by no means is he in the same league as Mitchell.

Makes me wonder why Malthouse always seemed to let him run free.

Why do some people use this thread to undermine Hodge.

Most of us agree Mitchell has been a better player, but Hodge is a modern day great as well. Lose either and Hawthorn have no dynasty.

Champion player who deserves every accolade he gets.

How he does not have a Brownlow to go on his resume is seriously alarming and a blight on the comp when some serious questionable winners have been awarded with it but it is what it is.

AFL Hall of Famer for sure, well done Sam on a great career that is still fruitful and even at this age you are still a walk up start into every team in the comp as of right now. :thumbsu:

Hardly trying to undermine Hodge. I just don't like when the media tries to equate them as players. Hodge is a good player and a good captain, but Mitchell is one of the greatest Hawthorn players to have played the game.

Nathan Jones is a "good player and a good captain"

Mitchell is ahead of Hodge in the context that Mitchell is the 4th best Hawthorn player of all time. Hodge is probably 5th or 6th.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. :)

Dont take offense to this mate.

According to your profile, you were 9 years old when Hodge played his best year, which statistically similar to that of dangerfield/fyfes over the last two. You also support a different team. Mitchell is easily outperforming Hodge now, but he is almost a freak in how he has played his best footy past 30, and this could be Hodges last year. Between 2005 and 2010 it was a different story. You were probably too young to remember Hodge at his best.

Our board have discussed this plenty of times. Almost unanimously, we'd have Mitchell at 4th, behind Matthews, Dunstall and Hudson. Then most likely either Knights or Hodge 5th or 6th.. Crawford, Platten and Brereton after that with Tucks name floated about as well.

I've always had a heap of admiration for him because, besides being the champ he is, he's not overly big, he's slow and came from humble beginnings as far as draft position etc goes.

And yet, he's one of the best mids you'll ever see. A shining modern day example of how a brilliant footy brain and skill can still overcome all the athleticism and draft science-y stuff that seems to be so important to everyone these days.

Funny thing is he still feels underrated a lot of the time. A ultra consistent and damaging player that most of the time you simply cannot stop.

Sorry Mitchell has always been better.
