Hawk 787
Don't worry too much about it, a lot of us can say we are clued into families. I once played footy ( poorly ) with Sammy's brother in law. EFM effective freight management.
A couple of other ex AFL players have worked in the company.
I played cricket with a Deggers...

Pick 33 will be good for the Hawks. Mitchell with his soft tissue issues would only have given the Hawks around 15 games in 2017 and would have most likely retired without any ongoing draft benefit for the Hawks.

Now you have pick 33. Luke Parker was drafted at pick 40. You make find another Parker at 33.
We don't need players like Parker who turn into a withering mess trying to perform on gf days.

Can someone tell me why exactly we're doing this?

Let's look at the scenarios

- Sam goes to West Coast, plays for 2 years. We receive 1st round pick. Everyone is a winner and I suppose I can kind of understand a deal like this (particularly if he comes back after those years to coach with us).

- Sam goes to West Coast, plays for 2 years and we receive a 2nd round pick. Why on earth would we trade our reigning B+F winner for pennies in the dollar? Particularly when his value isn't purely linked to his on-field ability, but also his ability to teach and curate our younger mids?

Graham Wright says we dont need to offload Sam to afford Jaeger and Tom.

Am I missing something?

Is it possible this is just Sam's management pushing it behind the scenes trying to get a bit more out of Hawks before he ends his playing career? Or maybe trying to get Hawks to consider a coaching transition for Sam with them?

All parties seem to say this came from Clarko.

That makes sense if, as a friend and a mentor, Clarko points Sam in this direction.

But surely there's something we don't know about going on behind the scenes.

Surely Weagles send a first rounder our way and we swap some second/third rounders back to them ...

Money we save in 2017 can be spent in 2018
Maybe there is someone the club is targeting next off season and Sam's salary leaving helps with that as they suddenly get cap space back. On top of that any pick they get could either be used as part of a trade this year or on a player at a higher position than we would have otherwise had in the draft.

Mitch gets to move his family at a better time as far as the kids ages go, gets say 5-6 years in another system as a player and coach and can then move back to Vic as the kids enter high school for a coaching role here if he wants to.

WC get a really good player that can help them for the next year or two plus a good footy brain and trainer to help off the field. Plus with the relationship he and Simmo have both know what they are getting

Tend to agree with Anthony Hudson's thoughts on this.

“I was stunned when I was listening to him explain the Clarkson discussion, and as he said you could have knocked him over with a feather.

“It was great for him to get out and explain the whole situation, but I’m still struggling to terms a bit with the logic of it from a Hawthorn point of view if they’re coming and want to win it.

“I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to have Mitchell and O’Meara in that midfield… they obviously feel they want to look after him and they can cope without him next year.”

Yep, can't see why Hawks want to do this.

People obviously speculating and some people are probably correct but who knows.

Still think its a bizarre decision.

We all know that Vickery, Mitchell and JOM were all lined up well before the season ended. Hawks were also relatively late in extending the contracts of the 4 30+ y.o.'s It just doesn't add up for me to be honest.

I can completely understand the personal aspect of the trade. Give Sam a chance to move his family when it's best for them.

But is that all this is?

Like everyone, all i'm thinking is what does Clarko and Simmo expect to exchange so we can benefit somewhat from this deal ...

You don't re-sign Hodge, Burgoyne and Gibson for one final tilt at a flag, and then trade out your best player.

There is something much bigger at play here.
It might be a 2017 thing though.
GW up to something

For the love of all money, I want to agree with you, but I just cannot hypothesise a reason why we're contemplating this?

I can't see it either......but it just doesn't make sense to re-sign Hodge and Gibson (Silk is ok) and load up for one last tilt, but then turf out Mitchell who is easily the best player.

Mitchell is an absolute champion, our 3rd best player ever. The extractor, reliable beyond belief, elite user, gets repeatedly knocked around, gets back up and goes on with it. He represents a key part of who the Hawthorn Football Club are in the last 12 years - professional, intelligent, hard working, and a fierce desire to keep improving.

Next year, if he's gone, Mitchell represents a loss in that culture. Sewell retired a one club player, Mitchell should also do so - we should keep him over Vickery, who has a terrible on field attitude.

When I was younger, I wanted to start a Sammy Mitchell fan club, such was his importance to us - you never need to watch him with the ball, you just look at who he could pass it to next.

Sam Mitchell is Hawthorn, and with losing him, we lose a bit of Hawthorn. I think this might undermine future loyalty to our club and and the culture that Sam Mitchell represents. Not to mention how great he would be as a leader and mentor of our younger players and new recruits and ensures that this culture is instilled in them as well.

From a pure footballing POV he has two years left at least, and I can't see him doing off too much, as he has such pure footballing skills.

Hope he doesn't leave, but if he does, I don't know if I could accept him running around in another club's colours.

Like I said. A 1st Rounder and this begins to make a little more sense.

West Coast gets 2 years from the magician, we get cap room, Jaeger, Tom Mitch and an extra first rounder to play with.

Anything short of a 1st rounder or a decent player and this is absolute madness.

WCE won't give a first rounder
I doubt they will even give a 2nd Rounder.

Its probably pick 49
