According to the Port web-site;

The club was informed today that Development Coach Brenton Sanderson will be leaving the club. James said the club was disappointed by Sanderson’s decision. “Brenton was contracted to the club for 2007 so we’re extremely disappointed he has decided to break that contract and return to Melbourne,” James said.

It's reported on CC that Sando will be returning to Geelong as an assistant coach, I'd assume as the development coach.

Good get if it's the case, although he's pulled a Cressa here. ;)

If we can get, then that's karma I guess.

Seems to be fairly highly regarded down at Alberton for his work with their group of kids (at least, when he was working for them). I'm not sure how much of the youth emergence down at Port can be attributed to Sando, but I've only heard good things.

Nothing against Sando, but why do we always get Geelong people back to the Cattery when we haven't had a premiership in 40-some years? Sure, they know the culture - but isn't that part of the problem? Maybe we need an assistant who's been part of a flag in the past decade.

Not wrapped in us incouraging somebody to break contracts. Dont like it when it happens to us , so whats good for the goose...
That being said Sando is quality and should never have been allowed to get away. He may have played elsewhere but he is a Cat and one who is swtiched on. He would be a top addition to our re-tuned , non playing personel.
Slowly , quietly but it is happening

That's what we all thought about Ayres, premiership experience in one of the most successful eras. We know what happened after that.

Maybe, but then again our last 3 senior coaches have been Malcolm Blight, Gary Ayres and Mark Thompson. As players they all tasted premiership glory, so I'm not sure what else the club could have done in that respect.

I'm not so sure Sando is best suited to the assistant coach's role - yet at least. I guess I envisaged him in a similar role to the one he held in good stead down at Port - in a player development position.

Great character, clubman, leader, communicator, and thinker of game and all, but there's something about the appointment that has me only 99% thrilled. Then again, as long as he can communicate his way to the players, I guess that's something to appreciate (and I suppose, someone like Mark Neeld in the player dev. role is a solid appointment in itself..)

And without questioning his character, I sincerely hope Sando doesn't convert to a simple "yes" man, as some ex-players tend to do.

Sando appears to be the makings of a good coach, I think it's a worrying trend that the GFC encouraged him to break his contract with PA.

That said I think we are seeing the fruits of Cook's review, there have been some quality decisions made in the football department (we can talk all we like about the technical nouse of Bomber). Brian Cook is a very astute and experienced club director and I think that in a year or two we may see some divedends.

i know they are going to rotate the assistant coaches through the forward, midfield and defence roles but who exactly is going to help the midfield now that we basically have two defensive minded and a forward coach as assistants?

i would have thought a coach to help the midfield grow tactically would have been more beneficial.

What's the go with Neeld, i.e. what has he been doing in the last 5 or so years to be in the running for this position.

Took over as coach of the Western Jets [TAC Cup] when 'Lurker' joined Geelong.Coached Ocean Grove to a couple [?] of premerships.

His name has been mentioned a couple of times with a job at Geelong in recent years.

Would a development coach at an AFL club be thought of as a better job than coaching a TAC cup side ???

Neeld is an idiot of the highest order, but that is a pesonal thing for me.

I must say though his coaching record is quite good.He would probably be a good appointment.

I would still prefer Buddha though.

Depends which midfield coaches are out there, though.

Point taken. Hadn't thought about it in quite that light. Thanks for that!

Thiese 2 statements probably sum up the appointment of some of the previous coaching staff:rolleyes:

our midfield is in dire need of someone dymanic, tactical and had preferrably played in the midfield to help them out which sanderson does not fit the bill.

the smart thing would have been to have him fill a similar role to that he had in port instead of guaranteeing him a contract for 2-3 years ala Lovell.

im not sure what midfield coaches are out there either but surely there must be someone out there who more closely fits the bill of what we need.

I think getting sando back is a good move in that not only has he done a very good job at the Power as the development coach, but he already is very well liked and respected at our club. It's a shame that means German is now off the radar as I thought he would of been a real kick ass get. But GFC is playing it safe here getting a man they already know.

German might be heading to Freo, that's why he may not have got the gig.
