SANFL mini-draft

Sadly, i think there are other factors at play in selection of these guys.
Is anyone really suprised to see Cloke and Butcher at Port Magpies?? Of course not, they are about to fold, they need all of the help they can get.
Me smells a conspiracy!!

Of course this also would help them with their desire to have Port magpies as their 2nds team.

I have to agree with this. I can understand Cam Cloke going at 2 to Port, but there is no way Butcher will be playing a more than a handful of games next year. For a pick 8 in the ND to go last in the SANFL mini draft is ludicrous.

Shattered that Norwood didn't get a pick. I know you guys are all shattered too that you won't get any more super awesome reviews of the latest draftee.

I'm also biased but pretty disappointed as well.

Other teams have breached the salary cap and never had this kind of penalty. IMO it penalises the AFL teams as well. Norwood are struggling on and off the field and have shown a tendency to give young draftees every chance to play senior SANFL football. Walker, Kite and Young are three recent examples.

Young guys like Shaw at Glenelg and Gunston at Centrals will find it very hard to break into what were the garnd final sides last year.

For mine I would have much rather seen one of them at Norwood.

What people are ignoring is that Port are alot more 'proactive' with their SANFL players being more willing to move them around and try and set ground rules with the SANFL clubs on where they should play. This makes the Crows recruits more appealing to many clubs.

Also, imagine the pressure on the SANFL club that took Butcher to give the second coming of Warren 100% game time at FF in league regardless of performance.

Glenelg made the Grand Final last year?;)

I know by June they had declared themselves grand finalists (and premiers) already but they forgot they had to play a bit of finals footy as well....

even though he ****ed up what he was trying to say, the **** up was actually correct

Theres no guarantee that Butcher will play all year in the SANFL, let alone 3 years. If hes any good, theres not many standing in his way for a spot in the side. Hes potentially better than Salter, Stewart and the Hoffs combined so if he shows good early form, and we arent winning games, then he'll be in the side by mid year in my opinion.

I didnt think he'd go last though.

Cloke has to get on the main list first to be able to play the majority of games.

Cloke will get upgraded in Rodan's spot. He will tear it up in the NAB cup and play round 1.

Norwood should have got a pick because of (1) sympathy and (2) to give Nathan Bassett something a little extra to work with than what we've already got for old times sake and to jack up our LEGIONS of supporters again.

That would have been really handy. I'm bitter, bitter I tells you. Surely we just had a little administrative stuff up in our salary cap (or did we do the Carlton thing?) Surely nothing untoward goes on out at the Parade.

Oh well, go legs.

Wa hoping the D Blues would take a Crow....oh well.

Me too

As an aside, do you guys reckon the SANFL clubs should be divided the same way they are for father - son selections. The clubs aligned to the Crows are able to select only from the Crows recruits, and likewise for the Power aligned clubs, they could only select from the Power recruits.

The clubs aligned to the Crows are Sturt, Norwood, Glenelg and South, the clubs aligned to the Power are the Port Magpies, Centrals, Norths, Westies and WWT.

So instead of turning out like this --

1. Panthers - Daniel Talia
2. Port Magpies - Cameron Cloke
3. West - Scott Harding
4. North - Andrew Moore
5. Eagles - Luke Thompson
6. Glenelg - Sam Shaw
7. Sturt- Jasper McMillan-Pittard
8. Central - Jack Gunston
9. Panthers - Daniel Bass
10. Port Magpies - John Butcher

It would have looked something like this --

1. Panthers - Daniel Talia
2. Port Magpies - Cameron Cloke
3. West - Scott Harding
4. North - Andrew Moore
5. Eagles - Jasper McMillan-Pittard
6. Glenelg - Sam Shaw
7. Sturt - Luke Thompson
8. Central - Jack Gunston
9. Panthers - pass
10. Port Magpies - John Butcher
11. West - Daniel Bass

Okay, South Adelaide misses out in an extra player this year, but it would probably even itself out over the years. Some years the Crows would have more new players than the Power, hence the 4 Crows aligned clubs would get more players in those seasons.

The main reason for doing the way I suggest is that the new Crows players, and the new Power players, would get more time with their new AFL team-mates, not all mixed up all over the place.

Maybe if the SANFL clubs were to see sense, all the Crows players could be transferred to one of the Crows aligned clubs, and all the Power players could be transferred to one of the Power aligned clubs.

Sure this may take several seasons, but I can see benefits in the scheme.

Anyone agree, or violently disagree?

As someone who identifies very strongly with the AFC's F/S SANFL teams, I love it. But I expect a tonne of our NA supporters on this board to spit chips, for example.

I don't see that it would make that much difference. I guess it means that the Crows have fewer clubs they have to deal with, but with the number of players involved I don't see that 9 clubs is a major imposition over 4 clubs.

The Crows are only 1 or 2 years off losing our SANFL F/S affiliations anyway. Once we hit the 20 year mark we're only able to take sons of players who played their eligibility games with the Crows.

As for Asgardian's idea I think it's the equivalent of moving football to Adelaide Oval instead of AAMI or a new stadium. A half assed idea designed to solve a non-existant problem by upsetting a formula that's not causing any problems.

Terrible idea.

Even in your workings you have Crows-listed Gunston going to Centrals. Also means clubs legitmately entitled to a player from the mini-draft miss out because there may be 1-2 players left, but they're both Crows listed or Power listed, and the club can only pick from one club.

The current mini-draft works well.

It was Carlton-esque I believe, hence the severe penalties.

OK, he made a mistake with assigning Gunston to Centrals. However, he did point out that some years there would be more Port recruits and more Adelaide recruits in other years. Over the course of time it should all balance out (though Port seem to focus more on recruiting locally than Adelaide do these days).

John Butcher sliding all the way to the very last pick. I call shenanigans.

It would make it easier for Crows (or Port) listed players to begin playing together. there are definite benefits in doing it. I don't know how much say the AFL clubs have in their player development in the SANFL .... its not a perfect system thats for sure.

One negative is how do you align 9 clubs to 2 AFL sides evenly. The father/son split works for what it is, but to allocate players - it is slightly skewed.
