His rational was that 2007 is similar to 2005(we got drum, ibbo and nockers) and we snared Nockers with pick #41 hence they weren't prepared to cough up pick 40 for Bradley because the Dockers felt that pick 40 in 2007 has some currency.

For once I agree with the CEO

Good strategy by the club. We will still get Bradley through the PSD :thumbsu:

Thats funny, caus in 05 we had pick 6 and then a father son in the 3rd round. Think the only difference was our 2nd pick was off by a couple of places.

Warnock is an obvious success and a great pick.

Andrew Swallow is and forever will be a better player than Garrick Ibbotson. How they missed Swallow is nuts. Ibboston was rookie list material to me.

Whether we needed another flanker when midfield types like Shaun Higgins Nathan Jones and Shannon Hurn were picked with the picks after Marcus Drum is another mystery to me. At least Drum played out country Victoria way where Connolly grew up (who gives a rats).

Flame me with the whole 'with hindsight' argument but I believed all I have said the day after the draft and nothing has changed my mind so far.

Lets hope Harveys influence means we get value for picks.

I don't think we did well in that draft at all..

Warnock was possibly the best value we got, and the jury is still out on him.

I agree with you totally. TBH I have tried several times to convince myself that picking Drum before guys like Hurn was the right thing and I can't.

I can see the reasoning in Ibbotson, but again I can't fathom why you would take him so early(As Raffox points out)....

But anyway - whats done is done. I though the draft last year was pretty good (Do not underestimate Collard's talent!). Lets hope they have learnt from their mistakes.

Might pay to wait till Ibbotson gets out of his teens before writing him off. He is faster than Swallow, and has far better skills than Swallow. There is every chance he will be a better player once he bulks up.

Swallow is one of the first picked in a team that made a prelim.

Tough as nails physically, mentally strong and wins his own ball. His kicking deficiencies were overrated and he is faster than the Carrs, Bell and Hase at least.

Garrick would want to be pretty good.

He is only 6 months younger than Swallow.

I hope your right, but at the moment its not looking good.

When are supporters going to get real? Its quite rare that players in their first year come in and make an impact, and that is usually in lower teams. Murphy did it for Carlton who finished last, Thomas for Collingwood who finished second last, Swallow for the Kangas who finished third last. Get a grip on reality before you bag the great club you support.

Take off the rose coloured glasses and don't bag someone who has a critical eye.

I'm not trolling or being totally irrational. I stand by what I said. Two years in and it is not looking good re: Swallow vs Ibbotson. Garrick might explode this year but he'll have to improve tremendously to get near Swallow.

My point was the 'experts' on BigFooty would have picked Swallow ahead of Ibbotson and if they can get it right then why the hell couldn't CC and Smart?

Actually you originally said...

OK I'll weigh in here.

Drum
Drum was a good solid pick up with our first rounder. He has good skills and at 190 cm a guy who was thought to be able to play back, forward and eventually midfield is a fine choice. He has a bit of character about him too.

Much more highly regarded than Hurn by the so called experts so taking Drum was fine by me at the time and I can live with that one.

Verdict - can't complain

Ibbotsen

from Burgatron ...
..but Ibbotson has been linked to the Brisbane Lions, possibly at No.25. He may also be in the mix at No.41. Adelaide, Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos are also understood to have sounded him out. A composed defender, Ibbotson can play tall or small, while he has good pace.

This is why he would have been taken - Ibbo has a bit of pace about him and at 187cm is a good height. There is no doubt in my mind that the club see him as being a midfielder.

He is an underage player currently 19 years 6 months (Swallow 20 years 4 months). A years difference at this age is significant - this is an experiment that needs to be judged in 2 or 3 years time not now.

To put it in perspective Ibbo is the in the smame age bracket as Chris Smith (19 y 6 m) Mourish (19 y 4 m) & Brock O'Brien (19 y 4 m). If it is too early to call their futures, it is too early to call Ibbo's drafting 2nd round as a mistake.

Verdict - Tall, pacey and good skills ...what we needed (OK and what we still need). Too early to tell if this was a good risk

Warnock
Well another experiment ..the experts had him going at 68 and described as a long term project.

I honestly don't think you can bag the selectors for rolling the dice on Ibbo and in the same thread congratulate them on taking a risk with Warnock. In fact it was obviously a call between Swallow and Gnocchi ...I am very happy with that choice.

Would you rather the draft read Drum, Ibbo and Swallow as the draftees? We took Warnock at 42 rather than Swallow at 43 - which is probably a bigger risk.

Verdict - At the time 'What The??????' ...now 'Hell Yeah!!!!!!'
*******

Simply the club took a punt on Ibbotson as an under age player they were probably considering if they waited a season (if not drafted) he may have been a much higher pick.

Way too early to make this call and say Swallow should have been taken.

I think the fact they identified Warnock is a win out of that draft. I ahve no doubts that Drum will be in our best 22 within 2 seasons and as I said with Ibbotson - if you ar going to judge him on his development - how is he going against blokes his own age?

Example - Pies .....Ryan Cook, Brad Dick, Chris Dawes are the same age.

Give it time.

Dont think so. Hurn was touted as a possible #1 until mid way though 2005. His form fell away as the year progressed due to OP.

And to the person who said Ibot is quicker than Swallow. He's wrong. Swallow is very quick, ran 2.92 for the 20m at the DC. Ibot ran over 3secs. He just looks quick in the way he runs.

Ibbo is still faster than Swallow. Ibbo is the second fastest player at Freo.

No point arguing because nobody will win. But as I said before, Swallow is very quick and comfortably out performed Ibot at the DC. Perhaps his being the 2nd quickest at Freo reflects more on the pace of the side than a comparision with Swallow.

There is no way Swallow is quicker than Ibbo.
