We could have almost 2 more months of Scooter campaigning on our tax dollars before calling the election

I suspect he will try to do just that because once its called and he is officially campaigning the LNP has to foot the bill

Looks like Putin is going full into the Ukraine. Attacks all over the country, including Kiev.

In a week when the polls show everyone now in fear and the Liberals now ahead Morrison will call an election. And probably win.

Saved by Vladimir it looks like.....

They have red arses. Will give you that.

You never expanded on the fight though. Who started it?

The baboon accosted a girl carrying 2 shopping bags.

She screamed (understandably).

I, kinda looking like David Hasselhoff, ran over in slow motion.

I shouted at the baboon. The baboon ignored me and continued attacking the girl with the shopping.

I punched the baboon in the jaw. The baboon turned to me and shaped up.

I screamed at the baboon and waved my arms.

The baboon picked up a fallen banana and ran away with various workers arriving on the scene throwing rocks after him.

The girl walked away without so much as saying thank you (although to be fair she was probably a bit in shock).

I'm more worried about what will kick off than a percieved impact on polls when the election can't happen until April at the earliest

Unlikely. Morrison came out yesterday and stated "we always stand up to bullies".

Well, precisely what is Morrison going to do?

Again, as usual Morrison will be shown to be all piss and wind.

Well there's another thread about that, this is about Aus Pol. And no doubt the Libs are going to take advantage of this to the max. Morrison can now appear "strong" by offering assistance to the Ukraine without any real consequences. There's not much that he can stuff up. So he'll get a lot of credit with no way to be critiqued.

This is a turning point I think.

Sportsbet is paying $2.95 for a Coalition win, I think it was $3.10 a few weeks ago. Not much movement, but let's see what happens next round of polls. Roy Morgan, Essential and Newspoll all due early March. Let's see how big the "War leader" bump is.

I don't see this as an automatic win for Scooter

Precisely what is Morrison going to offer? Thoughts and prayers?

Again, as usual Morrison will be shown to be all piss and wind.

It's more that the war will erase people's memories of the pandemic pretty quick. The negativity of the bushfires was erased very soon after Covid started, and Morrison rode the popularity in a "time of crisis". Then as time dragged on people realised he was all piss and wind. Now he'll ride a popularity wave due to "standing up to the bully Putin", but it will only last a few months or so while the crisis goes on. Problem for the ALP is he will be calling the election in the next few months.

If the polls due within the next few weeks show a move to the Libs expect a snap election to be called ASAP.

You know Bruce, I choose to believe this yarn, so well done you.

Baboons are truly scary things. Don't know what I would have done.

Of course Morrison is irrelevant, he will offer nothing but platitudes and empty hands. But that's not the point.

Politics is about perception, if the public perceives Morrison as being a "strong wartime leader", and the war in Ukraine diverts their attention away from the government's failures for long enough (just like the initial wave of Covid distracted them from his bushfire performance) then he gets back in.

Won't happen. This will fill the news cycle for another week or so, then it will go the same way as Syria, Afghanistan, etc. A far away conflict in another land that very few people have any interest in.

It will be all but forgotten by the time the actual election campaign starts. It has already bee going for 9 years and been completely ignored for the most part.

I would have agreed with you up until today because I thought Vlad would just be limiting his actions to Donbas, it would be handbags at 20 paces and then an uneasy truce. Now it's more likely he's going to try and topple the government, the war will last at least a few months and be very bloody. It looks as if it will dominate media headlines for the next few months. I never remember Russia into Ukraine and Donbas in 2014 dominating headlines as much as this. The only thing that dominated Aussie headlines was MH17, and that was a negative because of Abbott's "shirtfront" rubbish. Unfortunately Scomo is a bit less dumb and controlled and won't make such a stupid remark.

If it does then it becomes the major election issue. It also dominates media talk, and the last 3 years of Scomo f ups are ignored. It gives them a perfect line of attack on Albo for his student union past where his faction had some links with the Communists. Now of course Putin isn't a communist, but the average swinging voter doesn't know the difference. For them Russian bad guy = Commie, and Libs run ads painting Albo as a Commie.

All I'll say is if I was a Liberal party PR ad guy today I would be salivating over these events.

Where are these Polls saying the liberals are now ahead

THINGS YET TO BE TICKED OFF THE ELECTION '22 BINGO CARD

1 - The daily tele hit piece on Albos mom
2 - michael smith with some historical allegation
3 - shirko calling Labor " cocky "

Scummo is one lucky bastard. This is going to be the saviour of his election chances. Another Tampa

Yep.

Don't get me wrong, I loather Scummo and his cronies as much as anyone with a brain. But he will milk this for all it's worth. The media will be more focused on this than his last 3 years of f ups. I can see from the ABC News live feed he's preparing to address the nation at a podium flanked by Australian flags.

As much as I hate to do it here's a Sky News clip of snarky ass Caleb Bond. Yes he's a d*ckhead but he's revealing the Liberals election strategy.

Australia has to ‘look strong’ for the sake of the West

The Herald Sun’s Caleb Bond says it will “bode well” for Scott Morrison if things get worse in Ukraine as Australians will be leaning toward the incumbent government.
“But the only problem, really is there’s nothing we can do,” Mr Bond said.
“Having said that, we do have to try and look strong for the sake of the West, and that’ll look good to voters.”

I hate to say it but the election campaign fundamentally changed today. The Libs have the upper hand now I'm afraid.
