Sheahan's report on Dons
17 February 2006 Herald Sun
Mike Sheahan

IF THERE'S a club that should make a run from the tail-end this year, it is Essendon.

On the proviso the Bombers have reasonable luck with injury, they will play finals, or they will have stuffed up along the way.

That's a big call on a team that finished 13th last year, but logic says that's how it should unfold.

Here's why. James Hird, Matthew Lloyd and Dustin Fletcher remain elite players, fit and stung by the disappointment of 2005; Scott Lucas and Adam McPhee sit just below them; and then there is a group of solid, reliable performers headed by the Johnsons, Jason and Mark.

Midfielder Scott Camporeale joins them from Carlton to add class and pace where it has been needed most; Richard Cole, a Grand Final player at Collingwood at 20, gets a chance to restart his career where he wanted to be in the first place; and Chris Heffernan is back in hospitable territory after a forgettable stay at Melbourne.

Then there are the youngsters, a group headed by Brett Stanton, third in the best-and-fairest last year in only his second season.

The others include the gifted and exciting Andrew Lovett, Kepler Bradley, Jason Laycock, Jobe Watson, Ricky Dyson, Angus Monfries and Henry Slattery.

By any definition, this is a talented, experienced and versatile list. Hard to see it finishing in the bottom half of the ladder for the second year running.

Hird mightn't be quite what he was, but he will go into the season supremely fit, hungry and spurred by the thought he is only six months from retirement.

The major pluses between seasons are the solid preparation for new skipper Lloyd and the fitness of McPhee, even allowing for a minor knee problem.

Lloyd played too soon after a broken arm last year, lost confidence and didn't really hit his straps until the second half of the season.

He never looked quite the Lloyd of old, yet still managed 40 goals in the last 11 rounds.

McPhee is a gun, capable of being a top-20 player.

He appeared in 14 games last year, looked hampered by a stomach problem from quarter-time in the opening round after a blistering start, and still finished eighth in the best-and-fairest.

The Bombers toy with the idea of throwing him in the midfield and even playing him forward, but he is a natural rebounding defender.

Essendon struggled to field its best line-up from the opening round last year, when Lloyd, Laycock, David Hille and Dean Rioli were among the missing.

Yet the Bombers were good enough to beat St Kilda, Geelong and the Bulldogs in their worst of 25 seasons under Kevin Sheedy.

Essendon has a dream start this year, despite a first-up engagement against the premier. There will be no better time to play the Swans than Round 1.

The following six engagements don't involve one team that played finals last year.

In the first nine rounds, Essendon plays four games at the MCG and four at Telstra Dome, with the Round 2 trip to Brisbane the only travel commitment.

That is a not a draw; that's a head start.

Of the youngsters, Lovett is a star, Stanton looks a star in the making and Bradley and Laycock should be special.

Lovett was a late starter at 22, but the wait was worth it. He kicked 25 goals in 20 games in his first season, and, whatever he does, he does it with panache. Few players are more watchable.

Bradley probably plays centre half-back in this team, but you get the feeling Sheedy would love to try to turn him into Anthony Koutoufides of four or five years ago.

At 20, 198cm and 103kg, with 24 games to his name, it's worth a try.

Problem is, who is left to play at centre half-back? Dean Solomon can in an appropriate match-up, but he is only 189cm.

There's another interesting name among the youngsters, Watson.

He is gearing up for his fourth season having just turned 21. He's a boy, but boys with famous names have to grow up in a hurry.

I'm tipping he will be a player. He's not going to win at Stawell any Easter soon, but he's got footy smarts.

Like most young blokes, he needs time. He certainly deserves better luck with his body and, if he gets a fair crack at it, he will gradually establish himself.

Joel Reynolds represents a similar story. He has been around the place even longer, but has just 27 games to his name.

The romantic side of Sheedy desperately wants both boys to succeed. It is a big year for both.

Big year for the club, too. A repeat of 2005 won't be accepted meekly. Anything less than a spot in the eight should be deemed a failure.

==========================================================

I don't disagree with him.

Every now and again Mike Sheahan writes something sensible. I agree with most of what he has written here.

I expect us to make the final 8. Anything less and I will be extremely dissapointed and consider the season to be a failure.

Have to admit i thought it was pretty accurate. Now i am just waiting for the sky to fall down as it has been a while since Mike has written anything so normal about us:D

What he didn't point out was how we still don't have much depth in midfield, or to back up our tall backs. A few key injuries and we could easily end much further down the ladder.

We're getting there though.

Heffernan, Cole, Slattery, Winderlich, Reynolds, Dempesey, Johns, Ryder, Bolton and Henneman were left off the starting 22.

Some obvioulsy need some improving and none are superstars, but are all quite servicable.

Rubbish.

Bolton, Heffernen, Hennman are only just serviceable on recent performance. Winderlich, Reynolds, Slattery and Johns are of an age to possibly step up. It's unlikely more than one will. Ryder and Dempesey are first years. Not good to rely on. Cole has never played midfield for Collingwood, to say he is depth there is also hoping.

We may have the depth in a year or two. We don't have it now.

That's why I said we're getting there, not that we have great depth right now. Yes I agree we'll be there in 1-2 years, but most of what I said are serviciable. And Ryder, Dempesey, John and Reynolds need imrpovement, but are not hacks at the momengt IMO.

He did say injury permitting....

I think in this era of salary caps and drafts it is very difficult to have great depth.

The saints would have the most depth of any club going around, but if Sydney lost a couple of KPPs then they would struggle as would the Eagles as is what happened in the second half of the home and away season.

Injuries are more and more having an influence over team's season as no one has super depth.

Adelaide had something like 2 injuries at any one time (generally to non crucial players too) and finished top, another 2 injuries too key players they may not have made the top 4.

He wrote probably what every Essendon fan wanted to hear, dosn't necessarily mean he is right though or it is all going to pan out that way.

What is Sheahan's Essendon best 22?

B:McVeigh , Fletcher , Welsh
HB:Solomon , Bradley , McPhee

FOL:Hille , M Johnson , Peverill

INT:Dyson , Lovett-Murray , Laycock , Rioli.
EMG:Slattery , Cole , Heffernan

Trying to predict the outcome of an AFL season in recent years has been an absolute lottery. Who knows where we will finish? Certainly not Sheahan, nor myself, nor any of us.

Objectively I'll say we'll make the 8, but seriously who knows? Adelaide minor-premiers in 2005? Sydney GF winners? You've gotta be kidding. WE all know nothing.

Well I agree with Mike on the majority of the article except this. I would love to dream but lets not forget the Kouta of 5 years ago didn't play all year due to a knee injury, maybe that's what he was thinking when he wrote this. I love Kep to death but thats just funny. Let's just let him develop at CHB and hope he becomes the player we all know he can

i thought kouta played in 2001, and he did his knee again in that final against richmond? although year 200 was the year of the kouta, he should've a brownlow for that year instead of woey.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he meant the 2000 season where Kouta absolutely tore the competition a new arseh*le.

I thought the article was good, but the team itself showed no imagination, in so far as Essendon improving and going forward from past 4 years. All players were named in positions that they have mostly played over this period. This may be O.K for the sake of Crazy Frogs article, but for a bomber nut I am hoping Sheeds pulls a couple of leftfield master strokes and that some younger guys mature into positions already ear marked for them. This will share the load more and allow established stars some respite.

Sheahans side;
B:McVeigh , Fletcher , Welsh
HB:Solomon , Bradley , McPhee
C:Camporeale , J Johnson , Stanton
HF:Lovett , Lucas , Hird
F:Monfries , Lloyd, Watson
FOL:Hille , M Johnson , Peverill

INTyson , Lovett-Murray , Laycock , Rioli.
EMG:Slattery , Cole , Heffernan

My side is based more on hope and looking for some spark that may prove contagious, similar to 93.
B; Soloman ,Fletcher , Slattery
HB;Camporeale ,Bradley , McPhee
C; Dyson , Stanton ,Lovett-Murray
HF;Lucas , Laycock , Lovett
F Hird , Llyod , M Johnson
Fol; Hille , J,Jhonson, McVeigh
INT; Rioli, Monfries, Watson, Cartledge
EMe;Winderlich, Welsh Heff ,Cole, Johns , Lee,Pev, Nash
P.S- any of the emergencies could slip in at any time without losing much.
- have high hopes for Licha ,Johns, Lee ,Nash, Watson and Welsh will raise eyebrows but I feel he stagnated last 18 mths.
- Cartledge the big queery ,May need Laycock to Ruck.
- Campo must produce early.

Dont like Campo at half back , he needs to play midfield so he can move back or forward. Laycock would be better used as a forward pocket. Leave Lucas at CHF , Lloyd leading from the goal square and Laycock as the third tall hopefully exposing the oposition for height close to goal. And Cartledge be a queryin the ruck;)

B: Welsh Fletcher Lovett-Murray
HB: McPhee Bradley Solomon
C: Dyson Camporeale McVeigh
HF: Lovett Lucas Hird
F: M.Johnson Lloyd Watson
Ru: Hille Stanton J.Johnson

Int: Monfries Laycock Rioi Peverill

Emg: Cartledge, Heffernan, Cole, Winderlich, Slattery, Johns, Reynolds

This team is capable of beating Sydney, therefore capable of winning the premiership :D

It all looks good on paper, but we allways look good on paper, if we learnt anything from last year it is that it means fk all when it comes to the season proper.

What will get us there is ability in our depth and a little bit of sheedy genius.

hey guys..

i think you guys will be surprised with cole... he can play.. good frame too.. great disposal & i think he'll end up slotting into the 22... same with heff... HE'S BACK!:thumbsu:
