Black days: former Essendon coach Bill Stephen (front right) was criticised because his team didn't win enough games, but he is now regarded as the father of the "Baby Bombers."

Great pic. Looking at some of the players in the pic, except for Max Crow standing up the back, it reminds me of what a poor list Stephen inherited. He showed a lot of faith in the likes of Madden, Watson, Van Der Haar & did lay the foundations for the success that followed at Essendon.

Walls has a continuing obsession with attacking AFL coaches, at any given time he always needs at least one he can demonize. In 2005 it was Paul Roos, in early 2006 it was Cuddles and in late 06 it was Worsfold. He never has the grace to admit when he's wrong (which turns out to be all the time)

Maybe these issues go back to some of his failures as a coach.

I get the impression Walls' stuff is more about Walls being controversial than about what even he believes to be true.

He'd prefer to be wrong and in the papers daily, than right and no-one listen to him.

He's a bit like Caro, except that people have a go at him for his bitterness. Caro cops it for stupidity, and sheer ugliness.

I think I'm going to be sick.

Now he's on about Worsfold not being a good tactician.

Fair dinkum, someone needs to "Strempel" this bloke.

and people say hes class. good on sheeds for letting the old grump know hes not wanted anymore. about time channel ten and 3aw give the grump the flick.

And his changing of views. A few seasons ago he commentated a game we played at the dome. He praised Lloyd for having a set routine whilst lining up for a shot on goal (this included the grass throwing) saying it was a great example for young players to follow. A season later he was ciritising him for time wasting, writing an article saying how the ALF should 'clamp down' on this nonsense, or some such.

Caro cops it for stupidity, and sheer ugliness.
She also tries to pass herself off as a 'football writer'. Considering she's never written about a game in her life this is highly amusing. The Footy Record went downhill when she was the editor. Take the weekend of Jim Stynes record unbroken run of games. What was on the cover? A picture of Stynes? No. A picture of Tony Shaw bungee jumping. Stynes got a 1 and a half page mention. If it weren't for one of her richmond relatives, we wouldn't have to bypass her tripe each week in the age.

Is that a hard a gig as coaching Fitzroy and the Bears at Carrara?

No one could argue that and only a fool like Sheedy would suggest he was responsible for the death of two clubs. Walls didn't deserve to be sacked but I think he had worn out his welcome with the players and I think he changed his style when he went to Brisbane.

Walls was a very good coach of Victoria in State of Origin and he did alot to promote that when the AFL wanted to dump it.

Did Robert coach Australia against Ireland?

The selection of Wallis was a move to rough up Carlton in Richmond fashion and our only two key forwards were Kernahan and Spalding. Maybe we should remember the way the Australia attacked the man and not the ball when Sheedy coached Australia in the international series. ;)

You can take the backpocket out of Richmond, but you can't take the Richmond out of the backpocket.

It's irrelevant, Walls got sacked just two years after Elliot bought him a premiership, Walls is a nothing coach and doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as greats like Sheedy, Hafey, Jeans, Barassi and co

Here is the article that goes with it.

Kevin Sheedy was holding court at a leadership seminar at Windy Hill this week when Bill Stephen caught his eye at the other end of the room.
Sheedy broke away from the group of corporates, walked over and grabbed Stephen's hand, turning back to the visitors: "This is the bloke who set up my first premiership. Got me (Tim) Watson, (Merv) Neagle, (Paul) Van Der Haar."

They both started in 1981...imagine we got Walls and Fitzroy got Sheedy. My club might be dead right now.

Walls is a knob - he makes Channel 10 coverage eben worse then it should be!

I don't understand why executives think he is appealing to the fans!

Walls just says his bit as part of the job. If people actually believe what he says all the time then...well...zero respect from over this way.

Caro is simply a complete moron who couldn't tell crap from crystal, on or off the field.

I think Walls writes about womens makup somewhere or other, and Caro buys what he endorses.

Kickett had played every game for the year, so he was hardly lacking match fitness.
Kickett is still bitter to this day, shows his attitude was right on the money - then and now.
Form is temporary.

Kickett has not played a decent game since Round 17-18 that year and had not showing the required committment at training either.

Kickett can be as bitter as he wishes but the fact is given his form and attitude he did not deserve to be in the team for the 93 Grand Final.

A sad case of Dumb and Dumber, Sheedy in this case being the dumber of the two. Why wouldnt he just shut his mouth and get on with the job of coaching his side, instead of fuelling Walls' desire to write these pieces, which he is perfectly entitled to do, about himself and his club. Especially in March, Walls has a whole year to jump on Essendon as soon as they start failing again.

Kevin, you idiot.

Sheedy doesn't regret dropping Kickett. There's nothing to regret as we'd been carrying him for quite a while and we won the premiership. He definately regrets how Kickett found out and how he handled it.

Carrying him ?? Speaking as an outsider, I can remember at least one game that year where Kickett was the difference between winning & losing. Could the same be said of Wallis, taht year or any other ?

So what you are saying is Sheedy did pick up a list full of potential.

What I don't understand is why Carlton supporters defend Walls. I guess in truth it's just one of many things I don't understand about Carlton supporters.

He's hung more crap on the team in the past 5 years than anyone . . . well, ok maybe not everyone ;) . . . and you acknowledge his double speak and his uncanny knack of throwing barbs at the opposition prior to just about every Cartlon game. Hardly does Carlton any favours and infact does quite the opposite.

Sure he was a great player for the club, but as the saying goes, what's he done for you lately?

Strange mob these Carlton supporters.

Is the time frame for this since 1967?

You know, the year he rolled up.

If so, then after you've listed every StKilda player, supporter, board member, or whatever, who has done more for the aints than Walls has for Carlton in this time frame, we'll let you cut loose on him without fear of reprisal.

:D
