In all honesty, who in this list would be wanted by another club. Burton would be the only player of any value. Unfortunately we can only rely on the draft to improve our list. There is no way we can trade up given the cattle that we have to offer. It is going to be a few more years before we have a healthy list again.

Getting rid of Ayres would be my first priority.

Gotta say, a week is a short time in football.
If we had suggested we get rid of players listed so far, after the Power game, I would have been howled down.
We need to be less emotional and more realistic to our future needs.

You can have players who get a truckload of possessions, and continually turn the ball over or pick the wrong option,or have got poor disposal, and yet we herald them for 1 piece of play, or the possessions they got. Stenglein is a classic example.
In a game where we had more first year players, 2nd stringers, and underdone players than I have seen for a good number of years, where were the supposed leaders?
Certainly Stenglein was less than prominent for someone of his "star" status.

If you have a team full of second stringers, and no KPP of note, then the result was as expected.

No way would I trade Schuback and Reilly for Ottens. IMHO, I wouldn't go after Ottens unless we could get him for Burton + second round pick. IMO, Hudson and Biglands can be used as ruckman for the next couple of years; they are bash-and-crash types, and Brisbane haven't done too badly with that approach, and they offer more around the ground than Clarke anyway.

We played terrible, there's no doubt about it, but as Wayne said, the team was full of second stringers, first year players and guys that were underdone.

Unlike Wayne though, I thought Stenglein was one of our best. At least he put his body on the line, and he wasn't fully fit.

We desperately lack a goal-kicker. We haven't had a classy, reliable, star forward since Modra. How we can address this I'm not exactly sure. Obviously Watts is our future CHF, but he is a Jon Brown type in that he doesn't kick a hell of a lot of goals. We probably need to draft a talented young forward with an early pick and be patient.

We need to be playing Schuey and Reilly. They are midfielders and - wait for it - have pace, which is something we desperately lack.

We need early draft picks. Maybe we'll be given two first rounders if we continue our form of last night, and we HAVE to trade Burton for one.

Personally, I'll back Parker and Hentschel to become quality tall defenders, and McGregor can be used up forward until Watts settles, and then we can trade Ken for an early pick. Harsh, but its what we need.

Yes I have been on about our lack of pace and hardness in the midfield, need that dual combination which we should be able to get with a low drafty pick or two, if we can trade the right player or combination of players for a draft pick.

Stenglein, I love his attitude and his approach to the game. But he has physical and skill level limitations, which IMO means he should not be in our midfield rotation.
Why couldn't he go back to a HBF?

Reilly will come back and prove all the doubters wrong, just wait and see.

Just picking out parts of your post.

1. If you can deliver Ottens for Burton + second round pick, you will be a genius. It would certainly be my preferred option, but I can't see it happening.

2. And we will desperately lack a class ruckman when Clarke retires. Ottens takes marks and also kicks goals.

3. We lack a proper structure now because we have holes in our spine, the backbone that holds the whole fabric of the team together. Trading McGregor who is by far the strongest part of that spine would make us even more schaisenhausen!!!

Seriously Richmond would be mad to trade Otto.. He is not easily replaceable and players like him are very hard to find.

1. I know it would be a stroke of genius - which is why it won't happen. We are talking about the AFC Recruiting "experts" here.

2. Ottens hasn't come close to playing to his potential. I still think we are looking at him as he could be, not what he is. I just think we have more pressing needs (quality inside midfielders for example), than Ottens, and would be better served using our resources (Burton, draft picks) to fill other gaps in our squad.

I'll admit, its a bit early to suggest we should trade Ken, as he gives excellent flexibility in that he can play forward and back. It was just a thought for the mid-term future.

Think Parker has a long long way to go just to get in the side, nevermind occupying one of the most important KP on the ground.

2. Again, I agree. He is no star but he is a very good player.

3. Couldn't have said it better myself. Watts has the potential to be a CHF in the Jonathan Brown type. He is not a goal kicker mainly because he playes a bit further up the ground. We definetly need a tall forward who is a goal kicker. Wouldn't we kill for someone like Tarrant who you can pencil in for 50 goals a season. If we end up with a priority pick I would use those 2 top 10 picks on a tall goal kicking forward and a gun midfielder.

4. You were going along alright until then. No f***ing way!!!!!! He is one player we can count on. As much as I like Parker, McGregor will always be a better player.

Like Rutten, I have doubts if Parker will ever get a game for the AFC, even less likely given he is on the rookie list. This is not an opinion on based ability but based the way our match commitee operates and the selections and decisions have been going over the past year or so.

We're preying at Tigerland that both Otto and Cogs will re-sign, but seems to be an air of uncertainty around Otto.

Since day one there was always talk of him wanting to return home.

Richmond mightnt be that silly (uh oh) to offer Otto the Captaincy ahead of Cogs for next year. Could also see him reach his potential further.

Heck, even we could end up bottom yet.. We have Port in Ade, followed by WCE in perth... could really destroy any confidence already built.. Of course Im hoping that isnt the case.

But it would be an absolute travesty if we lost Otto for squilch..

Rutten will go close to being delisted at the end of this year IMO. If not this year, then next for sure.

UNLESS he actually gets a game and an opportunity to prove himself.

Personally I think he's too slow for AFL, but he needs a chance to prove or disprove that once and for all.

As for Parker, he has the job ahead of him just to get onto the list.

As I have said, in sport, players if they are good enough, pick themselves. The fringe one rely somewhat on luck, but they USUALLY remain fringe players.

BTW I can't see it happening, I think a third club would get a deal over the line in that situation. But the thing is you may not get maximum return for Ottens, ala Stevens and Port.

If he gets delisted without a better opportunity to prove himself, then that is a real blight on the recruiting staff/coach.
His pace (if that is what is holding him back) hasn't changed since he was rookied. If he's delisted for that reason, then why recruit him in the first place?

He does, but I'll back him and support him fully until he is no longer on our list. Just as I'll back Reilly, who I still think will be a gun.

We played ****ing poorly last night, no doubt, but I still think we have a few promising kids. We can turn it around - whether its this year or next is yet to be seen.

Guys like Shirley and Skippy however, are just running on the spot, they haven't improved and aren't going too. As dyertribe said, excess baggage.
