They should allow teams to trade one year in advance.
ie: Warnock for your second pick this year + 4th round pick next year (whatever it turns out to be)

What's everyone elses thoughts?

Yeah I 100% argee. Should be able to do it up to 10 years away. How good would it be having the first pick in the draft from a trade 10 years before. It would be good to see GMs screwing their clubs up for years to come. If it ever happened the AFL would exclude freo.

Nah, I can't explain why, but I just don't like the idea.

It wouldn't come in until after both the expansion teams (GC17 and WSFC) have both being in the league for a few years and have settled with their draft picks etc ..

This is why I don't like it. Coaches trying to hang on to their careers would trade away future picks for stopgap players, in an attempt to finish higher on the ladder for that year and keep their jobs.

When a new coach comes in he might have no chance to rebuild his team because his early draft picks are gone for several years.

One year at most if it comes in.

if they do it needs to have a top number protected like what the nba has. say for instance we trade our number 1 next year but make it top 3 protected and we finish 15th again we keep it but it goes onto the next year. and yeah make it only say 1 or 2 years in advance.

but i think you need to also trust your club to make the right decisions. its not just upto the coach to make the trade. if everyone agrees to it then they all fail.

Definately. Would make trade week a lot better and would help resolve struggles like the Warnock trade. In the NBA you can't trade 1st round picks in consecutive years. I.E. if the dogs traded their 2009 first rounder they had to keep their 2010 1st or aquire another one before they traded it. Preventing teams trading away their future. And definately only 3 years in advance to trade picks

Trading future draft picks is a terrible, terrible idea. Far too open to abuse, would allow clubs to self destruct to even greater completion.

Not to mention the fact that it would make absolutely no difference to the number of trades that occur in trade week. What makes any of you think that say, Hawthorn, would have been any able to make the Ryan O'Keefe trade by giving up a pair of second round picks from consecutive years - and what makes you think sydney would have been any more willing to accept?

More pie in the sky rule changes that screw everyone and achieve nothing.

I like the idea of it. Clubs wouldn't be stupid and trade 1st round picks for 3 years.

Even Freo wouldn't.

Are you sure about that???

If it happened, there would have to be 2 conditions.

1. A limit to how many years ahead. ( 2 or 3 )
2. A commitment from the AFL not to mess with the draft for without at least that many years notice.

The other problem with it would be father/son...Team Y knows they have a great kid coming through next year, and trades away their first rounder..Team X bids a first rounder....what happens?

Actually, the more I think about it, no....It raises potential problems for no appreciable gain.

good point.

maybe restrict what future picks you can offer.
(1) no pick top 10 pick or no 1st round pick
(2) can only trade one future every two years
(3) only can trade the next years pick
(4) make the pick conditional, pick 18 is quiet different to pick 35.

But arn't these problems the clubs have to decide on ?
To me it is just like ending up with a dud in the draft. You take a risk but it does not work out.
The only variable would be with the AFL changing any rules.
Im all for it and if clubs screw it up then their boards will have to put the heat on the list manager or coach who makes the call.

I say yes, but only one year in advance and not a first round pick. It would add extra liquidity into the market and increase player movement.

I don't think it would be a tremendous boost, but it would help. I doubt that the measures would be necessary, but a 1-2 year limit should be applicable. First round picks should definitely be up for grabs. Its up to the clubs. It would much easier for a Daniel Kerr style trade, not requiring clubs to make multiple trades, squibbing over 4th round draft picks.

This concept will be way to difficult for the muppets at Freo to comprehend. They struggle currently with trading/drafting, so it'll be cruel for the AFL to add another dimension.

you should be able to trade any future draft picks for up to say 3 years ahead. This is almost a given to happen down the track like free agency.

I wouldnt mind a one year ahead trading scheme which included first round draft picks and discluded clubs from being able to trade more than one advanced year pick. Then after a 3-5 year go at this limited rule it could be expanded to include 2-3 years of picks. It would significantly increase player trades.

Wouldn't like to see this brought in, but draft day deals must be allowed to happen!
