I share the concerns about his bull-at-a-gate approach but confident that'll improve in time. I think part of it stems from wanting to bring others into the game.

What I do wonder though is how we would've developed / played Harvey Langford if we took him instead. I don't think he would've had more opportunities than Draper has, and certainly wouldn't be as prominent as he is at Melbourne right now. Which is a development concern rather than a drafting one.
Development is an absolute issue, its the only concern I have for Sid

Only your best players are allowed to "play to their strengths", the rest must survive and learn to thrive around those strengths. If they can't do that, they do not deserve the luxury of being "played to their strengths" because they've shown they're not capable of being high-impact enough to justify it
This attitude is exactly the problem, and I suspect it is the club’s development philosophy.

Playing to your strengths is not a luxury. If a player’s outstanding strength is their inside ball winning, you don’t play them on a wing, because you’re wasting their talents, and you’d be better off just getting a natural winger to play wing.

You give each player a role that best suits their best attributes, and demand they show those best attributes, and gradually, over time, you work on their weaknesses.

If their weaknesses make them too much of a liability, then they probably don’t get a lot of early games.

My concern is that his propensity to move faster than he thinks hasn’t improved since his draft year. It’s very hard to teach a bull at a gate player to slow down and make better decisions. This ballistic style of his also often leads to poor disposal.

I’m not writing him off yet. Too early. And k think he’ll play plenty of games. But I’m very, very concerned we stuffed up another golden opportunity to finally find that gem of a pure midfielder.
Like Dangerfield?

You dont develop mids in the SANFL because the vast difference between the two leagues in the highly technical midfield role between the two leagues.

Chayce Jones dominating SANFL as a mid, yet cant get the ball at AFL level highlight this.

Port have the same issue.

Get him in the AFL side ASAP.

I think we have to be careful comparing a generational player with Draper, even though they do share some similar traits on paper. Draper definitely isn’t passing the eye test that Danger was as same age.

Also, Draper couldn’t hold a candle to Danger’s contested abilities. He was an animal. Draper is more outside?
