AFLW Sign and Trade - Official Player Movements Discussion

Very common in American sports - move on the gun player in their twilight years to a franchise needing a gun for hire (or "rental" as some say) and get players/picks, rather than just letting them retire (for no future franchise benefit).
This will have varying opinions because loyalty is probably a more significant thing to the players in AFL/W than American sports (some will disagree), but moving Daisy on rather than letting her retire could have absolutely sent the wrong message to the Melbourne playing group... and then they'd be the team getting raided.

Daisy wasn't going to be back in 2023. When I spoke to her at the VFL/W League Awards night at the side of the room (about 20 minutes before she went up on stage), she said wanted to take up the Geelong opportunity and couldn't have done '23 due to the overlap (and we mainly talked old VWFL stuff - Darebin v Diamo, etc).
She had the same opportunity at Essendon and knocked it back for a tilt at the S7 flag with Melbourne. The Geelong offer wasn't going away, and the timing of her retirement was solely based on what she felt she had left as a player.

Totally besides the point, anyway. Draft picks are useless without sufficient leadership, hence it's pointless to force out strong leaders in exchange for draft picks.

Then next year bang Purcel and Harris trades that are simply both gold standard trading for Melb. They then get West as a rookie signing. Like wtf were the other clubs doing? None went for her.
And why did Harris choose Melbourne? Oh yeah, it's because Daisy Pearce was still there.

Cut to 27 November 2022, Tayla halves a 1-on-3 contest in the forward-line and then kicks the premiership-winning goal 10 seconds later. The stuff of fairytales!

A good indicator of how the games progressing is how much mayo gets put on the retelling of good moments I think. 😏

This.
The expansion and growth of the womens game really owes alot to the mistakes of the mens expansion teams, it’s not just the AFL’s ideas but how every club has seen how GC had buggered it up.

Melbourne have a great group, played in the last two GF’s but it’s not a dynasty (I know your not saying that)
Every club that wins a flag and wins well or has a successful period looks like they’ve done things differently or have something the other clubs don’t.
Melbourne haven’t lost anyone they’ve wanted to keep apart from Pierce but I’m not convinced they’re head and shoulders above the comp.

Probably the best weapon against them wouldve been Tayla Harris to split packs and make the player in the hole lose her nerve.
Putting two behind the ball as soon as your 15 points up isnt a great look for the game. Not just in finals..pretty much their go to move all season.

Given the AFL highlighted before this how hard player movement would be, only 8/16 spots used in the PSP suggest they had a point.

A MEGA three-club, five-player deal between Collingwood, St Kilda and North Melbourne is set to kickstart the AFLW's sign and trade period, when the official window opens at 12pm AEDT on Friday.

The move is expected to see the Pies secure midfielder Tarni White and the versatile Grace Campbell, while the Saints will land experienced duo Steph Chiocci and Jaimee Lambert, and the Kangaroos will lock away key forward Kate Shierlaw.

Why are the Saints trading away Sheirlaw and Greiser?
Because they want to leave?

Writing's been on the wall for Greiser for a while anyway. To average <5 disposals and only 1 mark (for a player of her size??) per game across a season suggests there's something rotten in the Netherlands, with both parties in need of a clean break.

Today across the internet I've seen some wild appraisals of the players involved in the first trade.

Below is what their (now previous) clubs thought of them. Finishes in club B&F counts, in chronological order, with "--" meaning 11th place or lower:

Jaimee Lambert 30yo: --, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 4th, 1st, 2nd
Steph Chiocci 34yo: --, 6th, 6th, 6th, --, --, --

Kate Shierlaw 34yo: --, --, --, 6th, 9th, 1st
Tarni White 22yo: --, 10th, 6th, 9th

Grace Campbell 27yo: 4th, --, --, --

Why didn’t Essendon just get her for free last week
A theory might be (because the AFL don't release all the rules or they just make them up on the run) is a minimum length contract (say 2 years) might have to be offered for the PSP?

Thus Brown was worth at least 2 years, while Jacques was only deemed as worthy of 1 year?

Giving up a 2nd rounder isn't a lot in the context of this draft, which is really an extension of last year's draft (all the left overs). So in reality, the Bonbers gave up something like a 6th or 7th rounder.

Has she been playing?
Lambert 3 b&fs
Molloy has a b&f, is a gun and young. Oh and got the biggest contract in aflw history.

I stand by my comment that Pies have lost their two best players.

Pies stole Lambert off us anyway :p
