So... Hale or Bailey?

It seems it take a little bit for big Hale to get going. Was truly shocking in the first quarter, one of his worst quarters for a long time. But to his credit got back into the game and played some very good football.

I think for the rest fo the year, Bailey should really trying to improve his marking and work on moving into the forward line for Box Hill. If Bails can add that to his bow, he will be very important for us.

Ill go thru WCE games after and see how other sides stack up against them.

In Round 16 when Sydney defeated WC at Patersons by 52 points, the hit out count that night was 50-46 in favor off WCE, the ruck duo of Mumford and Pyke really took it up too Cox and Natanui and they physically matched them for the entire match. If you look at the game on the weekend, Sydney won the hit out count 53-50, yet we we're able to match them in that hit out department and clearances after quarter time, that's despite Roughead being about 193cm and his opponents in Pyke 200cm and Mumford 202cm. I thought we did very well in that area.

I don't think we should bring in Bailey this week. If we do, all this does is play into WC hands, we shouldn't bring in Bailey and sacrifice having an extra running player. I'm confident Hale and Roughead can at least make it a contest, not necessarily in the hit outs, i think we have no chance of actually beating them in that stat, but more so we can nullify their influence at the clearances. The last time we played WCE we we're smashed in the center clearances and had not impact at all. Hopefully this time, we can try and find a way to rove Cox and Natanui hit outs. We have to watch out for Natanui going third man up at the stoppages.

Most on here know that I rate the role of Ruckmen very high and that I support two Rucks providing both are good enough.

Bails does not have the form or fitness to warrant inclusion and, in any case, he is probably injured. The only "Two Rucks" option now is Hale and McCAuley. That combination does not fit the criteria of both being good enough.

The Hale/Roughead duo has been surprisingly successful and that will be the combination for the rest of the season. Bit worried about Roughy - looked sick or injured last Saturday ,or just "plumb tuckered out".

Am not a fan of the horses for courses theory. Just stick with the best. Maybe next year for Hale and Bailey or others.

Round 22 AFLCA votes

Sydney vs Hawthorn

9 Burgoyne (Haw)
8 Kennedy (Syd),
4 Guerra (Haw)
4 O'Keefe (Syd)
3 Lewis (Haw)
1 Franklin (Haw)
1 Hale (Haw) - against a fairly tidy opponent.

I may be completely alone, but I feel Bailey is pretty average around the ground and less than average up forward. We also can't manage to keep on the ground uninjured long enough to see if he can improve in these areas.

You can't just carry a ruck for his taps. They need to impose themselves much more than that. I feel it's getting too risky for the team to rely on him staying healthy, so I'm going to bite the bullet - we need to trade for another decent ruck or look to pick up a mature age Ruck. The only other half hope we have is Lowden. It could really cost us during our premiership window.

PS. Hale is doing a good job Rucking, taking marks and kicking 20-25 goals per year.

Hale deserves a darn good Roast for tonights efforts.

He was never gonna win the hitouts. For mine it wasnt likely that he would have a better game around the ground either. But this he certainly did.
I think we can safely say Bailey wouldnt have.

Well done David and thanks to Rough for the assistance:thumbsu:

After last night, this debate is over.
Hale, with the assistance of roughy, were fantastic.
The mid field knew that Hale would struggle to get the tap so they were right onto their opponent.
If we can do it against WCE we can do it against anyone.

David Hale has had a very good season so far. It's probably been his best season in his 11 year career. The performances he has put in, has gone some what unnoticed. A great 2012 season from David Hale!

2012 Stats
Games played: 22
Total hit outs: 500 Average: 22.7
Disposals: 308 Average: 14
Marks: 89 Average: 4

For interest sake, David "Hail, Hail, Richy" Hale came 7th for the Hawks in the Coaches award on 31 votes just behind Jordan Lewis. Got 3 votes v Eagles.

What is the future of Max Bailey? If he is not injured and can't get a game because of the success of Hale and Roughead will he look for opportunity elsewhere?

It feels kinda sad that for 4 years we were craving him to be fit but now we don't need him.

Would think given our ruck and injury issues over the last couple of seasons we will fight hard to retain him. Plus HFC has shown a lot of patience in him, it would be a bit disappointing if he wanted to do a runner after a couple of games at BHH.

TBH I can't see too many clubs being interested in an injury prone ruckman who is yet to prove his worth.

If I was a club looking for a ruckman I would be chasing Griffen from Freo or Warnock/Hampson from Carlton.

If Bails can get a good preseason under his belt next year and have a good run with injury I think we will see him play a bit more. I really think that the coaching staff want to see how Hale, Bailey and Roughead go in the same team for an extended amount of time to see if it can work.

I know people say it's too tall but look at West Coast they make Cox, Nic Nat, Lynch, Darling, Kennedy work. Geelong used Hawkins, Pods, Walker, West at times. Collingwood use Jolley, Dawes, Cloke, Goldsack as well as Tarrant, Brown, Maxwell, Reid. Adelaide have gone with Jacobs, Tippet, Walker and Jenkins at stages this year as well.

With Hale being so capable up forward and Roughead capable of playing everywhere - forward, on the ball, down back, Playing all 3 is not out of the questions as long as all 3 are in good form and contribute to the team and don't upset the structures. But this obviously won't happen this year now, but I for 1 would like to see if it can work next year.

The Water this year is extremely muddied by the fact Big Max missed the first half+ of the year. I don't know how others read it, but my gut feel was Max was our number 1 pick at the start of the year right up to the point he got injuried. I think the plan was Bailey mostly in the ruck, Hale resting him and Roughy up forward/down back. Roughy, in an article in last few days, said that the club didn't think he would ruck this year. I think when Max went down the plans on Roughy changed.

I don't think they'd want to ruck Roughy too much, could knock a good year or 2 off the end of his career. Does he enjoy playing there so often?

Well said. I think there might be a different ruck set up next year if Bailey is fit and remains from the start.

I agree Mollyfud, but I think the temporary change in strategy may be permanent.

For mine, although Roughy always gave glimpses of being a fantastic powerforward, he never really delivered. Before people start quoting stats for games here and there, I don't mean in a particular game - but rather for a sequence of games. I am not sure if this is due to lack of ability or due to our 'focus' on Buddy.

Roughy is now an awesome player for us who plays the forward role well (as it is his primary role), but also plays the backup ruckman exceptionally well too (don't look at hit-outs so much as overall effect). This means that he gets the touches he needs to really get into a game, which I think translates to improved performance when he is forward. Win - win.

For me, it is now about having a primary ruckman for Roughy to be support to (obviously with Roughy hopefully missing a match here or there to have a well earned rest when we can have two rucks).

Now Hale has front spot and it is up to Bailey to fight it off him (next season), with Lowden about to enter the ring!!!
