So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

I think people are getting good honest player confused with under rated players. Also thinking about who gets air time as opposed to who is actually rated highly by football fans. Names like Schulz, Jones, Toovey, they may not get mentioned on TV much because they're not as 'sexy' but the majority of football fans rate them for what they're worth. Jones and Schulz even more so it seems from this thread.

Reading the top 5 rucks thread, I'd say that Naitanui is very much underrated. When fit he is clearly the best ruckman in the competition. Doesn't spend as much time in the ruck as other first rucks due to Cox but when he's firing he has a genuine impact on the contest that few ruckmen do, regardless of how many hit outs they get.

Rioli as well. Often derided as inconsistent and occasionally laughably described as lazy. He is consistently good and sporadically brilliant as far as small forwards go. In his AA year in 2012 he must've only played 2 or 3 average games, with the others ranging from good to exceptional. No other small forward consistently impacts the contest like Rioli does.

Steve Johnson in recent times has been every bit a top 10 player in the competition but too often described as mercurial but not in the absolute upper echelon of players that he has been.

I'd say if an opposition supporter mentions another teams player then they probably aren't all that 'underrated'.

With this in mind I would nominate Jackson Trengove, one of our key cogs down back and relieving Lobbe in the ruck - think he has one goal kicked on him all year and even that was debateable.

Head over to the draft board though and he isn't even rated top 25 in his draft by most.

While I'd say Port have the side with the most underrated players in it, Trengove is not one of them. He has played quite well this season ( so has Jaensch;)), but he's been just an ok player up until then.

I've always liked Jonas. Rarely beaten and has solid skills. Ebert is another. Great hard running player to have in your side and rarely coughs it up.

I'd say the underrated but starting to get recognition players are Douglas and Cunnington.

Ones that are consistently underrated are Broadbent and Gia.

From us, Dale Morris is underrated a fair bit.

I think Kane Cornes is pretty underrated. Even though he's retired now Joel Corey was massively underrated.

Who doesn't rate Dale Morris? Whenever I watch the Dogs play the commentators spend 10 minutes talking about how good he is. Picken is a better nomination for the dogs IMO

I've got no supporting arguments for my opinion, but I tend to think Alipate Carlile is pretty underrated. It comes off the back of the prelim last year where he played very well on Trav. He then followed up the week later on Hawkins.

I don't know what his stats are and how many goals he concedes but if he played for a Victorian club, no doubt he'd get more recognition.

Matty Stokes at Geelong has been sneaky good for a couple of years now. elite midfielder good. not a word.
Lindsay Thomas - but he is a penis so no one is going to admit he's good.
Rampe - that kid is a future capt of the Swans

Jason Winderlinch from essendon. had 8 or 9 years of terrible injuries.
when ever he plays he has a impact on the field, brilliant one on one, and quick and accurate kick.

Brad Ebert. By a long way too.

35 touches, nine marks, eight tackles on weekend. Has been remarkably consistent over the last couple of years.

A great kick, fantastic hands, a solid mark, has immense strength, decent leg speed and is great both inside and outside of the contest. Can kick a goal too.

Almost a complete footballer.
