Sure, but at the time he was only 26 and a year off winning a best and fairest.

Silvagni is just a player.

We were awful that year and the AFL couldn’t even give us a little boost like they have with other struggling clubs.

Maybe they would have given us band 2 instead of 3 but I don't think Brad was ever the calibre of player that deserved first round compensation.

There were pretty strong rumors at the time that no club other than St Kilda was interested. With no competitive bidding war that would have reduced his contract offer.

Personally I don't think it's a conspiracy the AFL denied us band 1 compensation

If he goes to Gold Coast on a five year deal, fair enough, we were outbid with a high offer, weren't prepared to go there and walked away

If he wanted 5 years from Adelaide but signs for 4 at Gold Coast it's a pretty clear sign he chose them specifically and forced our hand
But this is only half of the equation .....the Academy Scheme, with its flood of players coming thru, enables GC to better meet MELB's needs with higher Draft Picks and/or players

We don't have the Goose & Golden eggs to compete on the same level

Apparently, Brad had triggers for an extra year which would have gotten us much better compo. But since it wasn’t guaranteed it didn’t get taken into consideration. At the time I thought that was absolute bullshit. However if my memory is correct Brad didn’t end up hitting those triggers and was delisted/retired, so in hindsight probably fair.

Your boy Campbell Chesser would have been worth approaching - although he may be better suited to a wing than right in the guts

Wing is an area we need to improve upon. Cumming isn’t high end, barely best 23, we need pressure on that role. Especially if Curtin’s future isn’t as a full time wing.

All hell breaks loose if a Capt of a Club seeks a trade (Merrett) ....but apparently, nothing to see here, if a Club wants to trade their Capt

Throw out all the rules, you grew up believing in Football ....there's a new world order now
How may bnfs has Steele won and pretty sure he was giving up the captaincy anyway.
Slightly different scenario.
There hasn’t been the same angst with Allen or simpkin as there has been with Merrett due to the player quality.

Petracca still needs to agree to go there.

Gold Coast (and GWS) have always had tons of picks and players to trade but have struggled to get talent to go there. I think the Academy/pick stuff is a non factor, the real draw card is the combination of location + (now) potential success

Like previous trades (Houston for example), if Petracca had nominated us, the deal would have gotten done

not potentially. it comes with huge risk!

but sometimes you need to take a risk... but there's a reason no one wants a 28yo brownlow medalist bull mid.

oh if only we had an academy, father son A grade mids and 3rd party deals that extend past free hiluxs and radio segments.
In MLB for the GF, I was lucky enough to meat a lovely young (ish) lady who was working for a prominent Tax Acct group that seemingly looked after many AFL players.

Now clearly nothing confidential or specific was divulged but she made the point how many players had incomes DOUBLE their actual AFL salary (inc endorsements above 500k for high profile players), how many had multiple (5+) investment properties and that Player Managers earn their money in many cases by organising many aspects of a clients personal financial affairs - inc the PM recg salary into a Trust Fund type set up and only paying the player a monthly allowances, keeping most of the tax records required etc

Nothing groundbreaking perhaps but those 500k 3rd party deals and endorsements were perhaps higher than I was expecting and any decent player in the game for 6-8 years or more should never have to work again.

Player development has a habit of being weird. I doubt anyone would be keen to bet on Rowell being a Brownlow medalist in year 6 off his first 4 years of production (where he looked like a guy who could win clearances and not much else).
I did :) ....one of the first incoming players into my SC side, once I saw Rowell running & carrying the ball early season

Likewise, Clarry will be in 2026 .....given his last 4-5 games, where he showed he was back physically, and getting contest to contest again

Correct, however he was bereft of options, if the Crows pulled out .....became a one horse race

This somewhat negates his negotiating position on Contract & $$$$ .....if GC know it's only them in the hunt now

It's a chicken and egg situation.

If we were fine with a 4 year deal but pulled out on a 5 year deal, then his negotiating position is weaker, which might cause Gold Coast to lower their offer, in which case we'd re-enter the race with our original offer.

This would force Gold Coast to pay a higher deal in the end anyway if that's the reason he is joining them
