But this is only half of the equation .....the Academy Scheme, with its flood of players coming thru, enables GC to better meet MELB's needs with higher Draft Picks and/or players

We don't have the Goose & Golden eggs to compete on the same level
The QLD teams now have 3 distinct advantages:

(1) allure of lifestyle. ADL and BNE had similar populations in the mid 1980’s (thanks to Mummy and Daddy’s World Book Encyclopaedias). BNE now double with massive natural inflows mainly net interstate migration for lifestyle reasons.
(2) ridiculously generous NGAs. Argued that Suns needed one as no FS but Lions almost equally benefiting despite the best FS in the league since Cats 20+ years ago. NGA = sick joke and needs to end.
(3) combined above 2 factors leading to success becomes self fulfilling. See Lions this year attracting both Draper and Allen and now Suns Petracca.

The AFL won’t be happy until it’s an all QLD final and I expect this within 2 years as both clubs are set up for dynasties like NO other clubs
Lol that’s how you say it these days is it?
Nothing gets past you Froggy!

I did :) ....one of the first incoming players into my SC side, once I saw Rowell running & carrying the ball early season

Likewise, Clarry will be in 2026 .....given his last 4-5 games, where he showed he was back physically, and getting contest to contest again
Clarry hasn’t improved his kicking though - it shite

Surely we look at Davies at GC?
Not OOC until next year but will be pushed out further again Last next year
2025 - 17 Disposals, 4.4 Clearances, 5.5 Tackles, 2.2 I50's

No slouch

He may not be it, but he’s got enough standout attributes that he’s infinitely better than taking a look at a ‘proven’ vanilla type.

Seriously good contested ball winner, unreal at navigating traffic. Good tackler, great size.

The other one I love, probably more than Davies, is Will Graham. We bid on him a couple of years ago too. Earlier than people expected.

Solid size, really good defensive game - positions well, tackles hard. And on top of that, his athletic profile is elite - second in the sprint & jump in his draft year. And got the most professional award at their B&F last night as a second year - so culturally can be confident he’s got the work rate and application.

With the athleticism he projects as someone with some real burst, but the discipline and work rate means he’ll fit in wherever. Would love him.

It's no surprise, how many of the good ball winning mids are average kicks .....Green is on a par with Oliver

SYD's Warner, average
GEEL's Dangerfield, average
BRIS's Dunkley, average

But their strengths outweigh the weakness ....you just can't have too many poor kicks ....and besides Oliver predominately handballs

It's a chicken and egg situation.

If we were fine with a 4 year deal but pulled out on a 5 year deal, then his negotiating position is weaker, which might cause Gold Coast to lower their offer, in which case we'd re-enter the race with our original offer.

This would force Gold Coast to pay a higher deal in the end anyway if that's the reason he is joining them
Rationale is right ....but it would require Petracca to reverse his decision with Club of choice ....and that won't happen

Gut feel is Petracca's preference was strongly towards Gold Coast and the extra money/year was the price to change his mind.

I reckon he will join the Suns without the extra year/money on his normal 4 year contract. Ultimately he will have forced us to walk away on purpose, rather than it being a Crows-led choice
No, he’s signed a 5 year deal with the Suns on extra money, that was the difference. Got that on very good authority.

Mmmm ....are you saying, it became a bit of auction for his services .....how predatory of Petracca

Fair enough, I trust your source

If that does turn out to be true then I retract everything I said earlier today about us pulling out of the deal

Yes, changed my mind on it too, that could end up in the situation Melbourne are in now with these inflated contracts in 2-3 years for us, maybe costing us signing someone like Curtin long term.

I personally think he only has a maximum of 2 years of top end football left

Well well well. Another day, another disappointment as a crows fan. Must address the midfield deficiencies NOW, not draft for the future.

The only out I can see from the clubs perspective is there was an issue with the medical (doubt), concerns around focus on football rather than brand or the most likely the trade cost too much.

Where we are at in our window right now I would’ve given him a 5th year I don’t care. If we could snag one flag in the next 5 years rather than be there abouts but not make it I’ll take that any day of the week.

Now with Petracca out, Oliver is probably worth looking at ONLY if we can minimise risk as far as possible contractually. We tried to with Stengle and he didn’t accept our contract offer with certain provisions.

I would only accept Oliver on the basis of clear and enforceable contract termination provisions (with no huge payouts) due to serious behavioural or drugs breaches as otherwise his “cheap” 3-3.5m contract could become our biggest ever albatross.

Would anyone really be surprised with whatever number strikes he may be on. Isn’t the rule 3 strikes and you are out? We MUST be protected against this clear risk.

If we were offering 3m to NWM for the first 2 years, then 700k for 5 years for Oliver and 1.2-1.3 for Bailey would sit well within the capacity I imagine. We would have been underpaying the 100% salary cap for years whilst prepaying our long term contracted players like Fog, Rachele, Soli and TT.

My hope is we still have at least 3 -4 quality mature players to be brought in. Ah Chee and Oliver would only be 2 and at least a couple still to come. If Lions are bringing in FA on 750-1m we should be able to do the same,e over the next half decade esp with many local elite lads not demanding absolute top dollar (TT, Rankine)

Since the NWM money went unspent and Petracca looks to be a no go, let's jump into the race for Butters

Really spice up the rivalry
Haha, only issue is their pretty purse is bigger than ours so watch out for the “Gentleman’s agreement” between the 2 clubs not to try and poach each others quality players go out the door
