Well this is my point.... theres no point trading for just more shit and i think reid believes this too. going to have to keep drafting and hope eventually hit gold.
Brisbane will get 5 more premierships by the time we do that

Meanwhile Hawthorn and Gold Coast are topping up with top tier players, in order to take best advantage of their good form

Re Rachele in the midfield:

Gary Albert Jnr started as a small forward / forward pocket. He started playing small stints in the midfield around 22 years old and full time from 23 years old.

Josh Rachele is 22.

Similar height and weight.

I’m not saying Rachele will be good as one of the greatest players ever to play the game but the idea that we can’t even try him in the midfield is crazy. Guy is the second most skilled player after Rankine on the team, has high footy IQ, and is who you want getting the ball.

He had a horrid year with injuries but people forget how good he was early this year. Was AA form before the North injury. Even coming in for a half after missing months of footy was one of our best looking forwards against Hawks. He’s probably been set back a year with those injuries but absolutely should play a few midfield minutes and you never know.

He won’t be that inside player we need I’ll give you that, though…
I think of all the players we have, he is the most likely to evolve into an A grade midfielder. Literally can’t think of a reason he can’t. It has to be tried, and now.
We have the makings of a very diverse and fairly complete high quality midfield in our squad now. We need a coaching group that’s willing to experiment and persevere with the young talent and resist the temptation to go back to the likes of Laird when things don’t go to plan. There is only one way to get experience. I think the biggest obstacle is our risk adverse coaching approach. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I thought Pedlar had a great season this one compared to last. He was terrible last season. Hopefully it dawned on him how serious he needs to be to keep an AFL career. This year I thought he was serviceable. He kept himself in ok condition this year, fitter than last by a fair bit, and then hopefully a second good preseason gets him humming nicely for next year.

Similar to Milera in that their bodies held up and they got better and better across the season.
Pedlar had 2 good games, one of them against a side who won 1 game all year.

Let's not get carried away

Oh you poor little lad, surely it’s not that embarrassing being called out for being stupid. You claimed that the story about Reid being hard to deal with was made up by a poster on here and added some mayo about us not recruiting 3 guns or other such nonsense. It wasn’t exactly a hard to follow chain of discussion. Scorpus mentioned it, you chimed in with your chip and massive ego and I provided the background.

And now you can’t recall the relevance and have wigged out, again. It’s not me on the piss mate, I pre-partied last night, nothing for me today. You’re obviously a few in though, memory is shot. And rums again too, the hulk is back, you’ll get a day off to relax soon.
Pretty sure without going back, my comment was "probably" made up. You need to brush up on your reading and comprehension skills

Wigged out. Lol, more like I don't really give AF

So you got hammered last night. Pissed the bed. And now you're hungover, grumpy, lashing out and talking shit again?

I don't drink rum

It does my head in how we have used the rookie draft in the last few years, we don't uncover talent, just extend an existing player for another year before cutting them.

It goes back to my thoughts on us not being ruthless enough with our list in an attempt to have a strong SANFL side.
We're not exactly "extending" them by another year - in pretty much every case they were already contracted for that final year long beforehand, we were just using the AFL's mechanism for transferring them from the senior list to the rookie list for the final year of their (existing) contract. The only alternative is/was to pay out the final year of these contracts, which has salary cap implications.

The result of moving them to the rookie list is that it freed up an extra position on the senior list, which meant an extra pick in the ND instead of the RD. I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Would you care to explain it to me?

we will probably do the same thing this year. so far only smith and crouch and murphy have opened up main list spots.

We've stopped trying to take players late in the draft at all

We've only taken two new players in the draft beyond pick 50 in the entire time Matthew Nicks has been coach: Luke Nankervis and Tyler Welsh. Hugh Bond was taken exactly at pick 50

We've taken one pick in the mid-season draft in a couple of years, none of them have come on to be AFL players yet. A couple of SSPs like Keane and McAndrew to replace departures or injuries

Other clubs have found players later in the draft, including top 10 teams, such as:

Collingwood - Jack Ginnivan
Fremantle - Josh Treacy, Michael Frederick
Geelong - Brad Close, Oliver Dempsey, Lawson Humphries
Gold Coast - Sam Clohesy, Jy Farrar
GWS - Jake Riccardi, Jacob Wehr, Harvey Thomas
Hawthorn - Ned Long
Western Bulldogs - Riley Garcia, Lachlan McNeil, Sam Davidson, Luke Cleary

Not the most amazing strike rate over 6 drafts, but one or two players is better than the zero we've found
We've also taken a few via the PSSP - with our most notable success from this being Nick Murray..

I think they prefer to use the PSSP these days, instead of the RD. Players who fall through to the RD (and beyond) are speculative at best. Some will make it, most will not. By waiting for the PSSP it gives us more time to look at the players and decide whether or not we think they have a chance of making it.

The AFL screwed our 2019 draft. Giving a priority pick to theGCS, took Noah Anderson off the table. You know, that big body skillful (and now team Captain / AA) mid type we were screaming out for. !

This board was screaming bloody murder if we were to pick another midget mid (Serong/Flanders), half back (Young) and even a small forward (Picket). I remember Bicks being the voice of reason thinking Ash/Young/Flanders/Serong would have been great gets, but everyone on the board kept screaming him down.

Now that you have revised history - can you name the other players people wanted to draft?

I can tell you I was on the Serong train and not so much the Dylan Stephens train

We've only done that three times. Ayce Taylor, Nick Murray and Tyler Brown. Just once in the last 4 seasons

That is, holding over a list spot for a train on player.

Keane and McAndrew were direct replacements for McAsey and Strachan after they became unavailable following the draft.

Edit: Actually Tyler Brown was as well, he was a direct replacement for Seedsman, so it's possible we've only done it twice

Yes, and one in a Final ....don't underestimate Finals type players ....Pedlar just needed some continuity, and hopefully 2025 is a good launching pad into 2026

It also depends on the depth of the Draft .....with the exception of what looks a super draft , drafts have probably not been strong enough to warrant rookie selections

However, as your list improves, you want to retain as many as possible ....who are regarded higher than potential rookies .....of course people prefer the turning over of seashells concept, those comments generally made by people who haven't watched any juniors play

Fk some of you crew are depressing - I’ll admit the finals were poo but some of you have lost the plot - I was at the Collingwood game , bitterly disappointing and I watched from OS the Hawthorn debacle but ffs get a grip.

I’m not a fan of Nick’s game day coaching or his team selection but this squad is quite impressive calm the farm sit back and enjoy.

Mind you I’ve had a few Bintangs and a couple of espresso martini’s so carry on.

New Bintang slogan: "Bintang - so good you can watch the Crows"

You'll all be very happy to know there is a very good player not spoken of in the media close to coming to the crows, The other club will hopefully agree to allow thr trade in the last few days of TP, They are happy to come here, and would be a 5 year deal if goes through. This will be out in media just before it hits.
Any clues?

Will Hayward?

gee ayce taylor i had completely wiped him from the memory banks

Agreed. It's the only way. The Golden generation of midfielders - Roo, Goodwin, Edwards, Kane Johnson...all drafted. And recently, Danger, Sloane, Crouchx2 ... all drafted. Traded Thompson and Dawson back home. McLeod was a bit of a special case with the Groom trade. Nobody else immediately comes to mind.

Unfortunately, rarely bottoming out has cost us high end draft picks, and then those mids we did draft in the teens and later we were poor at developing. Not forgetting some obvious woeful first round draft misses over the last 10 seasons.

Have to try and position ourselves higher in this draft to get the best mid we can. I don't have confidence in Hamish and Reid to do that though, but I'm sure they will spin it that we got a "top 10 rated player" with our 20th pick or whatever it will be by the time we select.
I dont see anyone in this draft that is "that" player. We will push our first into next year from what he said.

Its a shame that we have had no interest from other clubs in trading for Sholl or Jones even for later picks. Plenty of fringe players are moving clubs and we could do with some extra picks to bundle with the 3rds we have to get into position to take Ah Chee
I wonder why that is?
People overrate our players.

Luke Parker must finally be coming
