Just a friendly reminder that at the time the club was really needing key position players rather than mid/forwards and he was “meant” to be a clear standout.Just a friendly reminder Will Day was taken 7 picks after Fischer McAsey, with Hayden Young, Caleb Serong, Sam Flanders and Kysaiah Pickett in-between McAsey and Day.
McAsey certainly was a clear standout. Right up there with Angwin.Just a friendly reminder that at the time the club was really needing key position players rather than mid/forwards and he was “meant” to be a clear standout.
It was a dumb pick.Just a friendly reminder that at the time the club was really needing key position players rather than mid/forwards and he was “meant” to be a clear standout.
Ollie Wines, Brent Reilly, Travis Boak, Dan Curtin.... there's a lot of examples of players having similar reactions. It was a dumb pick.
With the mountain of knowledge recruiting teams have these days they would have well known the poor kid had mental health battles,
he clearly didn't want to go interstate (look at the family reaction trade night)
An unfortunate situation all round.

Yeah it was a pretty tough time to be away from your family and a crisis like that changes your perspective on everything. His father had a heart attack during Covid
It was quite unfortunate that we were the only club in the finals with two injured players. No but they would have made a big difference.
Hamish seems to struggle at times with mids, I think he can at times get too focused on a narrow set of skills, but then we also seem to struggle to develop too.
Chayce Jones, Ned McHenry, Harry Schoenberg, Ronin O'Connor, Luke Pedlar, Sam Berry, Jake Soligo, Zac Taylor, Billy Dowling, Hugh Bond, Charlie Edwards and Sid Draper all selected since 2018.
Needs to be some sort of serious overhaul on what we're rating or how we're developing/coaching if you can spend all that draft capital and you've jettisoned a lot of it or have it sitting on the flanks at best.
Someone talking common sense, WTH!Ollie Wines, Brent Reilly, Travis Boak, Dan Curtin.... there's a lot of examples of players having similar reactions.
Fish might have been the wrong pick (clearly), but he wasn't helped by the circumstances at the time.
Yep and add to your list Gallucci, Poholke, Signorello, the worst of the lot!Hamish seems to struggle at times with mids, I think he can at times get too focused on a narrow set of skills, but then we also seem to struggle to develop too.

Any good ones or all bad?Yep and add to your list Gallucci, Poholke, Signorello, the worst of the lot!
To be fair, Soligo did just make the 22 under 22 side. This is the problem in a nutshell at the AFC, recruiting the WRONG type of midfielder and then NOT developing them properly or playing them out of position etc.
Seriously - need someone to go spend an offseason to see what Brisbane do in their system to develop players.
He was one of only two forwards in the first final that fired a shot against Collingwood. Still think there's a player there with some of the things he does but I don't see it being any more than a HFF kind of role.I'm not as harsh on the club as many here for not having landed midfield talent this trade period - you can't force players to come, after all - but geez, we're now touting Pedlar as one of the answers to our midfield issues?
I was a massive Pedlar fan back in 2023, but there has been no indication whatsoever in the last two seasons that he will be a contributor in any role at AFL level in 2026, let alone representing significant improvement to our current midfield mix.
Nah. Not a natural ball winner. He's never shown he's capable of getting enough of the ball to be a mid.Pedlar is the potential inside midfielder we need. Has the right attributes. But the guy needs to spent the entire preseason running or on the bike Neil Craig style - looks gassed every time he does anything.

You cant really compare a guy like Signorello, I mean how many pick 60 odd midfielders actually make itYep and add to your list Gallucci, Poholke, Signorello, the worst of the lot!
While most teams draft record is 50/50 one of the areas we have under performed is in the Rookie Draft. With the exception of Butts and Keays they are mainly busts. Compare our record with Geelong. No wonder they can offer three firsts for Top 20 talent when they can find first team players in the rookie draft.

It does my head in how we have used the rookie draft in the last few years, we don't uncover talent, just extend an existing player for another year before cutting them.
It goes back to my thoughts on us not being ruthless enough with our list in an attempt to have a strong SANFL side.
You would think Murray Davis should know. This is the problem in a nutshell at the AFC, recruiting the WRONG type of midfielder and then NOT developing them properly or playing them out of position etc.

Murray Davis would know everything there is to know about Brisbane’s methods. We already have that intel. Also, development is one thing, sure, but their access to talent is the major factor for their success, and Fagan must be credited too. Elite Father-Son and Academy talents all over the place, with more to come. Plus they have traded superbly (Neale, Dunkley, Cameron, etc). Expect at least one more flag from this group. This is the problem in a nutshell at the AFC, recruiting the WRONG type of midfielder and then NOT developing them properly or playing them out of position etc.
