does anyone think Essendon will get the spoon in 2008?

I mean we've lost Sheedy and Hird, new coach, few retirees.

thoughts??

Although sheedy is the greatest coach anyone has ever seen i feel he did a pretty dodgy job this year... MJ--> not quick so dont play him on quick forwards, play him in the forward line where his pressure and good footy smarts can be of advantage..

Lucas--> dont play him in defence he is of most value forward

Just the overall defensive pressure that coaches are responsible for, rarely did we see a shepheard being put on, very low amounts of tackline even though we ararely had the ball.. no accountability.. This is the main reason i wanted hardwick there but we will see how knights goes. if we can fix these aspects we will be on the improve in 2008

We've lost Hird, he is THE major loss that will be hard to replace.

Dont even bother mentioning the other retirees as as a reason for us slipping next year. :o

We won 10 games this season. Hird is gone, but you would like to think that 10 or so young guys will improve enough to offset the lose of Hird. Fletch, Lloyd & Lucas will be a year older but hopefully the can still play at the level the did this season. The key guys are Lovett, Monfries, Jetta, Houli, Dempsey, Keppler, Laycock us these are the guys who I believe can give as more next season then they did this season. If they all play above what they did in 2007 then the lose of Hird should be covered.

wouldnt be surprised if we did we have a pretty crap list, i doubt we will get higher than bottom 4 :o

What sort of question is that? No way will we get the spoon next year! We have a better list than what most people think We just need somebody to bring it all together, that would be Knights.

Carlton of Melbourne will get the wooden spoon, more than likely Carlton. Essendon will play finals.

too hard to say what sort of a coach knights is going to be and hence where we will finish.

i would not be surprised to see us finish bottom 4and i don't think we will play finals. the hird factor can not be underestimated. its having a player like him on your side that turns a loss into a win in games like the sydney and west coast ones this year.

We'll definately be in contention for it... a new coach with fresh ideas isn't going to transform us overnight, there's a long couple of years ahead if the state of our list is anything to go by, anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly delusional...

honestly, i see more upside in the teams that finished below us this year.

i'm not hopefuly of doing well at all in the next few years. the age gap between our top players, especially our spine: lloyd, lucas, fletcher and michael, and our younger group is massive, thanks to some pretty poor drafts in years gone by.

can we win a premiership in the new 2-3 years? i think not. those players above will be either retired, and well past their best by then, just as our good young players develop enough to lead the side. that will leave a further gap in our list.

i'll still be there cheering them on like i always have, but i'm less optimistic than i've ever been as a bombers supporter. and it has nothing to do with knights either.

Lol you guys really overate sheedy and hird dont you
Matthews is way ahead of sheeds as good as sheeds was
Norm Smith also wasnt bad

I cant see us dropping below where we came this year, but I cant see us gaing too much ground either. We were lucky to be where we were this year IMO. But with our development, I think we will be around 13-10, but deserve to be there.

how about the giesch? kb? robert walls? spud?

had a few good ones haven't you
Geez relax. He wasnt saying that Richmond have had better coaches. He brings up a valid point. Norm Smith probably was the greatest ever coach. Sheedy would be in the next teir with Matthews and a few others probably.

From an outsider's view and i'm not attempting to troll. (feel free to correct me where i'm wrong you lot probably know more than me regarding Essendon)

I honestly think the bombers will struggle for the next few years.

Apart from last years draft, there hasn't been many quality youngsters coming through. For most of Sheedy's career he's managed to 'top' up a list to great success, and find quality players that struggled at other clubs.
The last couple of years however have really not worked out that well with regards to trading.

Strengths for Essendon are your terrific forward line and solid defense. Your best players in these positions have probably 3 years left in them.

Weakness is your midfield, probably bottom 4 in the competition, although this looks to be rectified from drafting it will most likely take another 2 years before your midfield is in the top8 of the competition.

At this time I feel your Forward and back lines will be heavily hit with retirements.

So I don't quite think Essendon will get the spoon next year, I do feel you will be languishing in the bottom 6 for another 3-4 years.

Best Case scenario is of course players like Gumbleton, Ryder, Dempsey,Monfries, Neagle come along a lot quicker than expected and fill the void of those key players expected to retire, then you have a chance to be mixing it in 8 the in 1-2years time.

Youre pretty spot on there Blue Boys. Our problem will not be in replacing our froward line IMO, but in defense, With Mal and Fletch being so solid, and Wellman before that, we have never had a problem. But we have no young KPP defenders coming through.

Our midfield is a problem, but only because they are nowhere near accountable enough for their opponents. I think we finished 4th for centre clearences in the league, so thats not a bad sign. Its just that we get killed on the rebound.
