Did Season 2/3 need to happen? Probably not

Did the ending need to happen? Probably not

But I still enjoyed it enough to give it a positive review

I do like how the Korean shows go where Anglo tv doesnt

Not happy about a US version but I at least got Cate right. There was a US version where it was reality rather than drama - I wasnt a fan of that . The problem for any spin off is coming up with new games and new concepts

A bit meh and predictable. Frontman going soft and the spin off at the end that we all know will be dog shit.

S1 did set the bar high. It’s hard to replicate the first season to maintain that fresh, shock factor.

What I don't understand about the ending is...
Why was Cate Blanchett's character playing ddaki with a homeless man? I get that this was setting up a hook for Squid Game: USA, but why ddaki?

Ddaki is a game which is unique to Korean culture, as far as I am aware. I had never heard of it before SG S1, and I doubt the homeless guy had heard of it either. Why didn't they choose a game which was more commonly played in the USA, for the right to enter the SG?

Not really. It's pretty obvious they never thought about anything more than 1 season and then all of a sudden it's a phenomenon so they have to scramble to make something up quickly to make more money. More often than not it's crap compared to the first.

Fair point but it was a link to the original - thats all

ie it didnt matter it was a uniquely Korean game - we as the viewer knew immediately what it meant

You're entitled to your opinion. I think S1 is worthy of top 10 status.

But I think the existence of S3 means it cannot remain in the top 10.

It didn't go the way of most American shows which I find refreshing. Of course there were plot holes but that's the same with every show, I felt they tied up all the stories really well.

I find most TV watchers now go into a show expecting an outcome and if that outcome is not what what they want they consider the show shit. I like seeing a show pull off endings that make sense and this definitely did.

It wasn't the ending that grated with me (in fact I liked it) - it was the characters which I didn't really get into and (slight spoilers I suppose) they killed off the more interesting ones too early.

I do agree with characterising S1 as top tier TV though even if the ending is predictable.
 
A mixed last season. Probably the weakest of the 3, but not to the extent that I didn't enjoy large parts of it. Obviously, massive spoilers below.

Dae-ho was done ultra dirty. The 'I lied about being in the Marines' felt like a gross oversimplification of someone who was being set up as quite a complex character. I wanted to know more about his family dynamic, why he played primarily with his sisters, what his father's opinion of him would have been. I guess it was largely hinted at, but I was very sad when he went so early into the season.

222 never felt like much of a character to me, outside of being pregnant. I think she's more a popstar than an actress? It kind of showed as her range was pretty limited. Effective enough, did the job she was paid to do.

Yong-sik in the Hide and Seek game was tragic because you just knew when he donned the red vest that he wasn't going to be capable of doing what needed to be done. It seemed tragically appropriate that his life ends because of screw up after screw up after screw up. His mum being the one to do it (indirectly) was probably the most shocking moment of the season for me, but it made sense. I hated that she did what she did afterwards, I know she'd said if he died she would have nothing to live for, and how could you after doing that to your child - but 149 leaving 222 alone in the games (she had no idea whether Gi-Hun would step up or not) felt out of character for me.

I thought the highlight(s) of the season were the secondary antagonists. The Shaman lady was a great watch during Hide and Seek - her backing out of that door and rushing off might be the funniest moment in the entirety of the show. Followed closely by her peeking at the bloody arrows to convince 100 she's psychic. Nam-Gyu was a strong and fun presence all the way up to his end. 100 felt like a necessary plot device to keep around to push the 'let's keep playing' argument but probably should have died during Jump Rope. Even unnamed players like 203 were fun to watch once they reached the final game or so.

Min-Su getting his revenge was a great moment and him on the pills was an interesting angle. It felt a bit sudden that everyone started calling him an addict straight off the bat though. His presence in the last game amounting to nothing was a bit of a let-down.

120 went out the way she should have, protecting the group and being a bad ass. Would have won the whole thing (and taken people with her, no doubt.

333 killing 100 was such a frustrating moment. Get him to drag the lunch across and then kill him. And not pressing the button on the last one...my guys... I don't know what to make of him as a character.

It was good that they gave the gangster an important role to play and he felt a lot more competent this season.

The plotline with the defected guard and 246 was done well, fun action piece fighting the Officer in the Captain's quarters. No notes, did enjoy.

The real letdown was the lack of payoff between the detective and front man. All of that build up over '2' seasons for a 'why' with no answer?

My main issue with that final scene has already been mentioned - beyond making it obvious for the audience, why Ddakji? Something like Jacks would have made more sense, and the slapping would have been enough. I'd say I wouldn't watch a US spin off if it happens, but I know that's a lie.
 
Well I enjoyed it up until

Gi Hun died.

Episode 2 hide and seek was probably the best episode in the whole series.

The new games were intense and well thought out. Put the characters into interesting scenarios.

Thought the chick that saved 246 would get the baby not Junho. Swerve.

The VIP’s in this show were pathetic. Horribly acted. What makes them such sick ****s that want to see babies being murdered? That could have been explored.

The CGI baby and dog were laughable.

The dude going through withdrawals after taking 1 MDMA cap. It doesn’t work like that South Korea 😂

Ending was absolute horse shit but I enjoyed the LA part. Keen for more Squid Games

Stayed up til the wee hours last night to finish season 3.

The CGI was immersion breaking too often. I know the dog and baby have been mentioned but one other that got me was the woman VIP - her mouth movements look to be CGI as I believe her voice is dubbed in post.

Not since Game of Thrones have I had so many moments thinking "oh wow their story is over, their purpose is served, they're going to die in the next scene". It's like you're watching the plot armour ripped from them in real time. The only character whose death came as a shock was 149. After reading a little bit I forgot a line of dialogue where she said without her son she had nothing to live for, so taking things into her own hands is understandable.

Overall I quite enjoyed the whole thing, could have done without the baby.

There was hope that the baby would replace that idea in her mind

I think for me her end was more shocking because I felt she would continue on because of it

Certainly puts her desperation during the vote into context, as well as her dialogue with 456 prior.

For the writers the baby was a handy plot device, the scene where 011 is about to take their own life before hearing the baby cry is powerful enough. It's just they ran out of ideas with what to do with the child in the end. I think a bit of ambiguity there would have been better instead of the Front Man giving the baby and the money to his brother. Much like the ambiguity of 011's own daughter apparently in China somewhere.

That being said, I appreciated the closure on the daughters of 456 and 256.

I think it was an 8 out of 10. It did break the empathy a bit, but what are you gonna do?
