Stats: Anyone have any data on how many km's players run in a game?

Its called football around the world. Am I obliged to call it soccer just cos I am in Australia? Nope. Soz love. Carry on.

Seeing as though you are in Australia you should call it soccer. Football in Australia means AFL. If you are in Europe call it football but I assume you are not. Pretty simple really.

So thats some law now? You cant be for real. Ill call it whatever I want, I could just as well tell you to keep calling it "ossi rules" or "foody". But you wont do so, so neither will I.

Um, no, 300 million yanks call it soccer. Probably more in the latin world call it futbol or calcio (what is it in portuguese?).

Only about 60 mill poms call it football. And who cares what the poms think?

Back on topic... from the GPS report
Distance
The average distance covered in the games across all positions was 12.5km ±1.7km. This
is in contradiction to previous reports that have stated running distances of some players
were found to be upwards of 20km a game. Although these large distances may have
occurred in the past, they would appear to be atypical of a modern AFL game. The
shorter distances recorded (12-13km) may be due to the higher rotational strategy applied
to ensure that a high work rate is maintained during actual playing time. This indicates
that while the absolute distance covered in modern day AFL may be lower than
previously assessed, the intensity during on field playing periods may in actual fact be
increasing as the game, and capacity of players develops.

I watched some old doco about Man U back in 2000/01 after they'd won the Champions League. In it they claimed that Paul Scholes was the fittest player in the world and covered more ground than any other player, they then went on to say that in some games he could cover upto 14-15k's. They then went into a long section on the boots that Beckham and Scholes were wearing... :p

Imagine em getting cleaned up by a Leigh Mathews or Darren Milane? Run effort? About 10cms! Cracks me up when soccer heads try and tell me how far they run. Like saying Robert De Castella would be great at it, as long as no one tackled him!

I remember Bucks was measured once and he rand 19 or 10 km... clearly a few years ago... since he aint running nowhere currently
I'm pretty sure it was in 2003, and the maximum was 19km for the season and i think the average was 16km.

Something that these numbers also don't account for is the physical work (tackling, shepherding etc). I remember playing my first game of footy after playing soccer for many years, and i couldn't beleive how much harder it was (and i played in the midfield for soccer).
