Round 15 Trivia:

1) St Kilda won 3 consecutive round 15 matches 1907-9 and 1927-9. They didn't win three consecutive again until 2005-7.

2) Hawthorn first won 3 consecutive round 15 matches, 1959-61 and didn't lose consecutive round 15 matches after 1961 until 1997-98.

3) In round 15 1980 St Kilda 5.6-36 lost to Sydney/SM 6.14-50. In round 15 1981 St Kilda 5.5-35 lost to Carlton 6.14-50.

4) Adelaide has played 9 round 15 matches at home at Football Park, they have won all but one, 1994 v Richmond.

5) Fremantle has only won 1 round 15 match away from Perth. 2006 v Collingwood at the MCG.

I have always thought that Stevie Wright kicking eight goals against West Coast in 1987 must rank as one of the most flukish individual performances in modern football. He had never kicked five in a match before, and did not even like Ian Dunstan nine years before have an amazing number of possessions to get those goals.

I have not seen that game, but have seen the following week’s Essendon game and Wright got those goals just being where the ball was: not in the classic manner of a goalsneak. It is easy indeed to imagine Wright not getting a goal in a full season’s work against the great Eagle defence of the 1990s: there was no way they would have let him get the kind of goals he was kicking in those halcyon weeks of 1987 that the super Blues of Round 19 showed were a reflection of poor play by opponents. Collingwood in the Matthews era were in many ways a team of similar style to Carlton and West Coast: hard, man-on-man play which was extraordinarily effective at breaking up the Swans’ style if applied properly. The day where the Swans scored 2.11 (23) I recall quite well: the Swans’ two goals were the first and last scores of the match and a defence as solid as Carlton’s in the 1987 game demolished a team that had won four in a row in between.

Gary Sr's 14 goal hauls....two were in 1993, Rd's 6 and Rd 14 against the Swans. Gazza would have been about three months shy of his 32nd birthday at the time of that match.

Also great to see from Fron the Bear's stats how many classic Cat players of the early 90's played in the biggest wins, names such as Handley, Paul Brown, Forssman etc bring a tear to the eye sometimes...They were amazing days in those times, offensive footy at it's most pure form. Damn the Eagles for knocking us off in Grand Finals!
