Both forced their way into strong sides, playing predominantly half forward type roles. Both will be looking to spend more time in the midfield going forward, who would you prefer?

I'd probably take Sidebottom, he is the more rounded footballer. We have Yarran who is going to be very similar to Varcoe IMO. Although adding more pace would be a scary prospect.

As for who will be the better player, well I'm not too sure but I think Varcoe could impact games in a more effective way but Sidebottom may be more consistent.

Its hard to say given that Sidebottom has only been in the system for 2 seasons. besides these 2 are completely different types of players. a better comparison would be Wellingham and Varcoe since both are very similar players.

Why do they have to be so similiar? The poll's not about specific attributes, like who can run faster, it's just about 2 young players who'll hopefully get more midfield time. They're both half forward/midfielders, it's which one you'd prefer going forward?

IMO Sidebottom will be aiming to become a Boyd-type mid, and Varcoe a Cooney-type. Some people like consistency and smarts in a footballer, those who always do the basics right, others like explosiveness and game changing ability that lifts the team in a single passage.

Granted Sidebottom hasn't been in the system long, but I think we've seen enough to know he's got some quality about him, if anything it's a complement. While Varcoe's got a shitload of talent and really stepped it up last season, slower development that Sidebottom but I think they're at similiar stages - Not there yet but a lot of promise for the future.

Obviously I'm a bit biased but would choose Sidebottom. Think he will be a consistent gun for us for a long time. In saying that Varcoe is a jet who I think will be a very damaging goal kicking mid and will rip teams a part. Varcoe will be more exciting to watch but Sidebottom more reliable, both would be looking to really lift their game in 2011.

sidebottom just have alook at the number they gave him 22 its probally the clubs most famous number. this guy will captain the club when the time is right. big game player, finals, and 2 grand finals that were simply awesome. now i know varcoe has 5 on his back, but really get serious gablett was a legend varcoe can only dream about. varcoe seems to really go missing in big games, and if he inst selected or injured i think the cats would have 5/6 others who slot right in. sidebottom is already so far ahead theres no catching him, this applies to 2/3 of the competition. sidebottom in his mid 20;s will be pushing the very best in the comp, varcoe in his mid 20's could be pushing the sanfl best. he reminds a bit of cupido from the bombers, look where he is now.

Good poll.

Varcoe was great this year, and will only get better.

But Steele is something else. Will be a star of the comp one day. In a way I put into the same sort of group as Jack Grimes. One of those 'how the hell didnt he go top ten' type of players dominating at a young age!

In fact Grimes v Sidebottom poll would be interesting- very different players but the sort of guys that look like they'll be stars soon enough!

Who else is sick of the term " goes missing in big games" when its clear they havnt or worse one player hasnt played in a big game.

Definitely sick of "goes missing in big games". It gets bandied about far too often, usually with little or no actual foundation for it.

how about round 19 v collingwood, actually i was dissapointed when he was on the bench he more use to the pies while he was on the ground.
Grand final 09, watched the game last week on fox he was horrible, when the heat was on, which it was for the entire game. Qf 2010 v the saints again poor, and the clincher prelim 2010 v the pies, this guy is overrated to the max, i think he will not play more than 120 games, which 90 of them will be quiet as a mouse sort of games, then throw in 10 or so goodish games, and then maybe 5 great games, where the media will proclaim that wearing the number 5 has a just suiter. This will end to script just wait and see, delisted or traded within 4 years.

You mean the game when Varcoe had a hand in 6 of Geelong's 8 first goals (4 goal assists, including a 55m pass through the middle of the ground that hit his teammate on the chest running goalwards with an opponent right behind him without him having to break stride, a tackle across half back which set up a goal down the other end, plus one he kicked himself)?

Yeah, he was really poor that game.

I think the hype over Varcoe was not justified, sometimes a player is overhyped on BF to such an extent that their performances are judged too harshly.

Both Varcoe (injuries permitting) and Sidebottom will be gems but I will stick with Sidey if I had to choose.

Varcoe if I had to take one at the moment, Sidebottom has plenty of time to catch up though

All of a sudden people have started jumping on the "Varcoe will be a superstar" bandwagon, because in his fifth year he actually pulled his finger out and started doing something.

The fact that Sidebottom is arguably better performed than Varcoe despite the fact that he's almost three years younger would suggest that he's got more room to grow than Varcoe does.

Varcoe has pace in his favour, but virtually nothing else tips the scales to him over Sidebottom.

Aww diddums Vinnie.

Last year was his 4th playing senior football, after missing his pre-draft season with serious injury, and indeed has barely had a uninterrupted preseason his entire career.

Sidebottom is alright at gettign the ball fed to him on the end of a possession chain, that's about it. Varcoe is a class above, and will continue to show it.

If that was the case, why did Sidebottom have the most centre clearances in the replay of any player on the ground in GF2?

Unfair assessment of Varcoe, in 2009 he averaged 14 touches and a goal a game which is good for a small forward. He increased that to 16 touches and a 1.5 goals a game last year.
He has gotten better every year he has played and looks to do the same again. Has a class about him which sidebottom doesn't have though I do think Sidebottom will be the superior player.
