MELBOURNE

PICK 1: Jack Trengove 18
Sturt SA, midfielder 185cm 82kg

The perfect replacement for Brock McLean. Almost single-handedly got Sturt into SANFL grand final this year.
Mature and ready to go - theory is he will be taken at No.1 as he is better equipped to handle pressure.

PICK 2: Tom Scully 18
Dandenong Stingrays, midfielder, 182cm 74kg

Best player in the draft. Wins hard ball and runs just as hard. If Dees had one pick, he would be it. But after the expectation placed on Jack Watts last year, they might decide to shield the local boy a little and give him time to emerge.

PICK 11: Aaron Black 18
Peel Thunder, WA, key forward, 193cm 78kg

With two midfielders in the bank, the Dees will surely look for a tall to complement Watts. Would love to get Butcher, but he'll be gone. Black is a good athlete who has had an impact in WAFL.

OTHER PICKS: 18, 34, 50, 66

CLUB NEEDS: More quality kids. The Dees are solid in defence, but another key forward would be nice.

CLUBS SAYS: "Last year, the quality ran really deep. While we had the No. 1 pick, it was a particularly difficult decision that was made really, really late and I don't think it gave us a great competitive advantage over the first 10 picks in the draft.

This year's draft isn't as good as that. For us to have two of the first eight to 10 picks is a powerful position."

loving this photo btw <3 lol :D

For the life of me, i cant believe Scully is listed as 8kgs lighter than Trengove. Looking at the footage and even that photo you would swear Trengove is Cale Mortonesc

Can't wait to see the photo re-done after draft day, it will be basically the same but both of which will FINALLY be in melbourne jumpers :D

Edit: what do you guys think about Aaron Black being predicted to be our number 11 pick?

Didn't like that comment much, I think in the end Watts was the standout prospect in the draft. The draft might have run much deeper in 08 but Watts made the no. 1 position his own.

As for a competitive advantage, you never expect that from a first year KPP but give it 3-5 years we will hopefully see that gap widen.

The "better equipped to handle the pressure" theory is probably the worst thing ever said in the mainstream media.

Maybe the club shouldn't play Scully's debut up as a media event like they did with Watts? There was bugger all 'pressure' on Jack that we didn't create ourselves.

well said.. what a wank saying that scully cant handle the pressure.. i hope as a club we dont buy into it and dont SAY anything about it.. scully looks to be warrior, should be able to handle anything.. take him at 1 and let his football handle the 'pressure'

Since it is a weaker draft than the 'super draft' last year, pick 1 (let alone pick 2) does give us a greater competitive advantage since the gaps in quality even within the first round should be larger.

Competitive advantage means nothing unless we are fighting for a finals spot or a flag & I don't see at least the latter happening in 2010.

Yes, he is correct in saying we have a greater competitive advantage but as you say, we need to capitalise on the advantage.

He lost all credibility when Gary Rohan was listed at 196cm and would help the spine of the Swans.

Also he's got Lucas at #14, I still think West Coast will go with Lucas and if they don't and he's there for us at #11, take him.

The whole 2 page spread looked like he'd just cut and paste it off the BF trade fourm. He could have at least included some of the fine C:\mydoc's... work being done on the bay.

The "better equipped to handle the pressure" theory is probably the worst thing ever said in the mainstream media.

Even if you do take this ridiculously stupid theory into play, my first thought is that you'd maybe want to keep the additional pressure off the kid from interstate, everyone seems to ignore this point, that if trengove cracks there's a risk he'd want to move closer to home (and yes i'm well aware his "go home" factor is reduced because he's not from adelaide & close to the Vic border, but still).

Also, Trengove has been rocketed into the limelight this year, Scully has been carrying the no.1 mantle for over a year, longer even, all word on Scully is that he's been totally dedicated to playing AFL for about 4-5 years & his manager was even quoted earlier in the year saying "Tom just wants to play AFL next year".

Not having met the 2 it's hard to say who you'd think handles it better, but my theory is that in previous years where the number was massively predetermined (Cooney, Deledio, Murphy, Gibbs), the "No.1 Mantle" hasnt had any detriment on their careers. Just stick with Scully

Im not just saying this because im a freo supporter but im glad Dees are picking them two because personally i think that Anthony Morabito is the player evryone should go for and here are some reasons why

Strong build and still growing

tall

Faster than Scully and Trengrove

Exciting playyounger than both scully and Trengrove

Can be a big body midfielder or a forward and even a defender

and i think he should be #1 in the draft

Clubs we wont be taking draft advice from: Fremantle.:D

Although your talent identification criteria may explain some of the decisions made in the past.

But seriously of the popular top 4 selections the only one thats likely to slide is Mora, some big question marks over his kicking. If Freo want Pav 2.0 Aaron Black looks a more likely type, not that he is a top 4 draft pick.

get outta here newbie... how can a team get beaten by 10 goals and expect to magically beat them next year. We must of done a pretty shit job of tanking when we can still beat you by 10 goals.

dream on... that 10-goal flogging was basically the only time we actually tried to win in the second half of the year, and look at the result.
