If the jet did crash into the Indian Ocean - whatever the cause - life will become dramatically more difficult for those searching for the plane.

The sea has depths of more than 7,000 metres (23,000 feet). Winds and currents could shift any surface debris tens of nautical miles within hours.

"Ships alone are not going to get you that coverage, helicopters are barely going to make a dent in it and only a few countries fly P-3s (long-range search aircraft)," William Marks, spokesman for the U.S. Seventh Fleet, said.

The older pilot seemed to live for flying. He had a pretty awesome simulator set up at home. There have been reports of the plane changing altitude significantly ... as far as we know there's still been nothing found or demands made.

I think the pilot lost his mind, went for a joyride and then crashed somewhere isolated like the middle of the Indian Ocean.

There may have been someone really important on that plane that terrorists either wanted to 1) kill or 2) take hostage
Those 20 workers for that tech company. :p

Maybe that's what it was about TBH. Far out suggestion, but could it have been extortion? Maybe for IP, details on some security flaw, or just cash?

They have 17 billion semiconductors and industrial controllers in the market. If there was an inbuilt backdoor or vulnerability, it would supply a danger of such massive consequence, given the damage that could be done to any company or state that uses their hardware. I mean Raetheon use their chips FFS.

None of that is "evidence" of anything. And as well as those points there were plenty of other reports/"evidence" that don't fit.

Someone who can say "this is what happened, and this is how we know", not people saying "I saw a post on a forum from a former pilot who says he thinks..."

It is looking like a hijack might be the case - although it's been a week of "official reports" closely followed by press conferences denying those reports. All I'm saying is that if it does turn out to be a hijack, the people who were saying that five days ago weren't saying it on the basis of any special knowledge or insight, they were just guessing like the rest of us.

circumstantial evidence!

Well after a week, even if not confirmed, the families have something to hold onto.

This is so crazy!

Did someone just say Kazakhstan....

could make it with 2hrs of fuel to spare...the problem with that is the crossing of the Himalaya's and requires a special air-routing.

ALA airport might make sense if the Uyghur passenger wanted to hijack the flight.

Putin. I'm calling it
China or Iran.

It seems incredibly unlikely, but the conspiracy idea I made up jokingly at the start of the thread, was Snowden leaks contain info about a vulnerability in Freescales hardware, China or someone has details and attempts to negotiate with one of the workers for information. On the flight over something happens, maybe a deliberate hijacking, maybe sabotage to prevent said people reaching China.

99% sure this won't be the case, but still?

So somewhere between Kazakhstan, Thailand, Indonesia, possibly Turkey.. da faq!?!?
