just been re-watching the final 5 minutes of the cats v hawks game, and watching bartels mark, i noticed something id never noticed before. bartel is free in the pocket, running backwards, looking only at the ball. there is a hawk perfectly placed to spoil, would have absolutely hammered it over the line for a draw. little stokesy puts a sheperd on the hawk, stopping him from reaching the contest, and giving jimmy an uncontested mark. along with mackies tackle on buddy, it was one of the greatest moments from the game. hardly noticeable, but brilliant. happens at 8:18 of the video...

also, a brilliant tunnel handball by selwood at 1:06. totally unfazed by the pressure around him, deep in the hawks backline.

what a game that was.

Re: stokes' sheperd final 10 seconds V hawthorn

I love the passage of play from about 5:10 to 5:30 when three or four Geelong players just will themselves to get the ball loose. First you have Hawkins just tear the ball out of the hands of a teammate, then you have Varcoe ripping the ball out of the hands of a Hawks player, then Rooke crashing his way through two or three tackles to get the ball to Ablett, who shrugged a tackle and passed it to Bartel who has a shot. It was a shame Jimmy didn't see Mackie streaming into an open goal, as that passage of play really deserved to end up with a goal.

I remember there being a better video. Also, Stokes sheperd was debated a lot just after the game.

debated? theres no debate necessary on that sheperd. im assuming the debate was over whether or not it was legal. only side contact i could see, and was involved in the play.

I still laugh at Gaz's reaction to Mummy standing on his foot. :D

Re: stokes' sheperd final 10 seconds V hawthorn

if stokes wasn't so crap we might have won the game by more:thumbsu:

Don't read BF much? We were filfthy about it.

(even if illegal shepards are only paid 3-4 times a season....when it decides a game... ;))

When was that? I don't recall seeing that :s

*EDIT* Saw it.

As for the shepherd yeah i saw it and thought it was nicely down by Stokes. I didn't see it as illegal so didn't put much thought into it.

Any one else notice that the first behind Bartel kicked, Mackie was free and Bartel could've past it to him?

I think it was like Joel Corey's kick and just a rushed kick towards goal hoping to just take the lead. Under the pressure he was in i can forgive him for not spotting Mackie.

Re: stokes' sheperd final 10 seconds V hawthorn

I mentioned it on this board at the time------- A smart shepherd from a smart player We need stokesy to fire in the finals I hope he does. He'll be hurting from that GF whitewash last year. I have confidence in the little guy to deliver this year:thumbsu:

You gotta be joking!
Campbell Brown has made a CAREER out of illegal shepherds off the ball, long before the ball reaches the forwards. How do you think Fluke Hodge and that hack Gilham get all those uncontested marks?

He was up there with the best in the '07 Prelim and GF. Here's hoping he can find some of that form this weekend and help us go all the way.

:D

But Simon, you also claimed that the free kick to Mooney wasn't there because Rooke pushed your dud ruckman into him, right? ;)

*goes back and edits 6 month old post*

....no, what are you talking about? :D

Haha
Your contributions to that thread were freaking awesome and made it easily the most entertaining thread i've read this year.
I admire the passion, but man, you could whine for Australia.

I'm incredibly bored and doing all i can to avoid having to do the work i'm being paid to do so i've had another read through that thread this morning, and for the reading pleasure of those who missed it, here are some highlights of Simon's performance in the last five minutes of the game:

Geelong work over the umps again.

Rooke pushes Taylor over Mooney.

**** you umpires.

**** you umpires.

6 times a Hawk forward is taken down after a mark. At LEAST 3 are paid 50m every game. NONE were paid. 5 of those 6 shots were subsequently missed.

Even if they only paid one of the obvious ones (like Scarlett's potentially reportable knee drop into Dowler first up) we win.

HTB - Schoenmakers, Mitchell and Sewell all copped horrible calls. Yet Selwood, Taylor, Bartel and Chappy? all got away with worse. Geelong kicked two goals from those decisions - we would have got shots from 3.

Taylor-Mooney in the back. Rooke pushes Taylor who stumbles forward into Mooney.

Lewis-High - There were 4-5 infringements prior (all to Hawthorn) of which none were paid. Lewis reacts (as usual - which is why he cops it) and is penalised.

Thank you, Simon :D
