Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Should be a good pickup and might be an impact player off the bench. I am sure Clarko has a job in mind for him!

WORST case scenario Stewy unloads a few bombs straight thru the sticks from the center of the City Oval for Box Hill Hawks! Still be well worth watching:D

Hell yeah! johnny barker kicked a few from just infront of the circle, i am sure dewey could kick em from FB

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Stuey Dew is a great pick-up for Hawthorn. As someone said (Power Supremecy?) Dewy will kick it from half back to half foward and put it straight on to Buddy's chest, off one step, and it will be a flat kick too, not a loopy kick.

This is a pretty good photo:)

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Glad we took a punt on Dew.

I don't think it was a massive gamble at all considering the amount of youth we already have on the list, and the fact we once again kept and used our first and second round selections.

I've like how we picked up some more mature guys to compliment our junior players over the last three years. Guerra (PSD), Gilham (rookie), Taylor (late pick), McGlynn (rookie) means we added some harder bodies to our young team without giving up anything of real value.

If it comes off could really add something to our side we lack, and whilst it seemed a strange selection at first, could really pay off for us. If it doesn't we haven't it wont matter given the amount of developing players on the list.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

It amazes me the amount of know all, know nothings that post on this board. Hawthorn, and Dew copped heaps of crap after he was drafted, about his weight mainly.

I would imagine Clarko and Pelchen may have a bit more of an idea on drafting, and Dew than the vast majority of negative posters here. Maybe it's jealousy, I think so. Stuart Dew will be the bagain pick up of the draft. With around 10 weeks to go till round 1, I'm sure as a professional footy club, they will be monitoring his weight, diet, fitness and strength. The man has not lost his skill. If it was'nt for his weight, he would have gone top 20.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Guerra has been one of the better trades in recent yrs...an underrated pick up .

Dew is unlikely to suddenly become a better footballer than he was when fit...so he's not even an issue even if he does get fit enough.

Not looking too chunky there in the background! Definitely think he is a handy selection! :)

You're kidding aren't you? Trying to justify your clubs stupid decision.

Take a good hard look at the 2 running players in the background. One is slim, comfortable running while Dewy is a fat lard puffing away and struggling.

Any shot of him shows a gut that yes he may slim down a bit but at the end of the day all others are well ahead of him.

I agree.:thumbsu:

Also the game is even faster compared to a few seasons ago. Sure the guy can kick, I'll pay that, but how long will he be able to keep up if he can at all. Byron Picket looked fantastic when he joined Melbourne in '06 but come 3/4 the way through the season he was spent. Anyone who thinks Dew will be coming off half back is an absolute tool. The only way he can be an asset for the Hawks is around half forward drilling goals or pin point passes but I don't think he'll last. Hats off to the Hawks if he does as they did go out on a limb but he may be just too slow and the modern game is about defence as well as offence and most players will leave him in their tracks.

Not sure:

Its not like he retired like Lockett did, and came back when he was past it.

Dew is 28, and had a year off, like many do with a knee injury and still come back very good players. Instead of an injury Dew had time to rest his body, and do a huge fitness program to be in better shape than his last couple of years at Port, and hopefully back to where he was 2003/04.

Probably wont be back to his absolute best, but I can't see why he can't get close to it.

We actually got him in the PSD, and at the time a lot of fans were spewing chips that we didn't pick up an extra rookie. This is similar to Dew where there are a lot of fans angry we "wasted" a draft pick on what many deem a "has been" over a kid who, in all likelihood, probably won't be on our list in three years.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

He looke better after christmas than when i saw him during the SANFL season...

Stick him at FF and he will kick a few, maybe.

Tony Lockett role? Although where does Williams sit then.

I like Dew as a player, but marking is definitely not his specialty....

At his best (and fittest) he makes a brilliant half back flanker who can go forward and kick a few from a long way out. The key is using his kick in the best way possible, either setting up or finishing off play.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Looks like he's doing it hard to me. Dewy's back on his heels and blowing whereas the young blokes are on their toes and smilin'.
Course he.s doing it hard,he,s big and somewhat over weight, but he is there for a reason and barring any unforseen injuries or accidents he will be very valuable to the HAWKS, big kick, hard man, he will do whatever is asked of him.Yep he is a good get
don,t be fooled .

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

I'd like to see him play on Sampi. That'd be a hoot.

Seriously he should keep slimming down and then give the NFL a go.

My understanding is that Dew is fitter now than he was in his last two years at Port.

He still has 3 months to go and he is on a programme that gets him right for round 1, not the pre-season. I expect him to start in a forward pocket with Willo and Boyle and as his fitness improves, move up to a flank.

Dicko got 30-odd goals last year in that role, so can't see why Dewie can't do the same.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

The season is only 10 weeks away.

Dew will not be fit enough to play whole games, but, like Acka for the Dogs last year, will win us a game or 2 by kicked big last quarter goals. Could be the difference between 13 wins & 15 wins.
