Red tape limits Cats' big party

THOUSANDS of Cats fans will be locked out of Sunday's Supporters' Day at Skilled Stadium because of tough restrictions on crowd numbers.
The ground's official match-day capacity is 27,000, and even though fans will be allowed on the playing surface during the family day, Building Commission Victoria has capped the event capacity at 27,456.
It has issued a stern warning to the Geelong Football Club and City of Greater Geelong not to exceed that limit.
Last year, more than 30,000 spilled into the Cattery to welcome the players who broke the club's 44-year premiership drought.
Geelong Football Club chief executive officer Brian Cook said, while the club was still hoping for a massive crowd, the restriction was established for health and safety reasons.
"The rules have been set and we need to abide by them," Cook said.
"It will be first in best dressed.
"This year we have had to put on more security staff, and that makes the event a very costly one, but it all needs to be done to ensure the security and safety of fans."
Geelong cheersquad president Norm Richardson urged fans to arrive early.
"The club's membership has gone up, and even our cheersquad membership has increased," he said.
"It's possible there could be some disappointment on the day, but people should get there early, find a spot and relax; it's a totally relaxed day."
Building Commissioner Tony Arnel said numbers needed to be restricted in case patrons had to be evacuated during an emergency.
City of Greater Geelong infrastructure and recreation community general manager Dean Frost said some fences and seats had been removed for safety reasons.
"The Building Commission has indicated it expects council and the football club to adhere strictly to the maximum permitted capacity of Skilled Stadium's public areas during the Supporters' Day," Mr Frost said.

Can't get a ticket for the Grand Final? Don't worry. You won't be able to celebrate with em either.
Here's an idea. Don't have the bloody thing in the stadium. Whats wrong with the cricket oval out the back. They're both outside anyway. Or maybe not even have it at Kardinia Park. Maybe the racecourse, Beckley Park, fricken Bell Park. Who cares. Just somewhere in Geelong that allows unlimited celebratory supporters access.
