The Jumper or Guernsey is a real beauty but what has been your fav

Fortunately their hasn't been many changes

My fav is the Red v jumper from when they were South Melbourne and Sydney in the early days.

Then around 1987 ? The jumper changed sewing a white opera house over the cut red v which took the top part of the jumper and extended a small red portion down the back but maintaining a white back with red numbers and two red stripes down the side.

Then at the request of Garry Buckenarra to signal change at the Swans they changed the jumper to how it looks today pretty much with the red back and white numbers minus the SMFC on the back of course.

Their was one attept I think at a preseason jumper which you see as an opera house with large red and white stripes coming down from it (hard to describe sorry)

Then enter heritage round which saw a return of the old South Melbourne Jumper which excites me every year but always looks a bit strange without a red colar. I know players don't wear jumpers with colars anymore but I wish they would print a faux colar on to truly represent the heritage look. Collingwood did that one year.

Swans wore a Centenary Jumper in 1996 I think against Melbourne which was basically red and White Stripes and a fack lace up design on the front and did the warm up in knickerbocker style pants.

I don't know wnough about the old white jumper with the red sash and wonder if we will see that jumper one day in the heritage round.

Have seen some old seventies footage of white shorts and in the 90's they started wearing white shorts against some clashing teams such as Brisbane and hooped red and white socks against Fitzroy and Melbourne.

2006 seemed to be a permanent switch to hooped red and white socks.

Not sure why I'm typing all this other than for my own nostalgia

I kind of wish they would wear the Old South Melbourne jumper for Melbourne games similar to the the way Brisbane are giving a nod to Fitzroy with their current away strip.

Well my vote is for the old South Melbourne/Sydney jumper all white with a red number and red V on the front and red colar but my age may dictate that - 34

I'd assume some of the younger fans would love the opera house Sydney identity jumper of today.

Oh man sorry just love the red and white

We used to wear the hooped socks for our away games, I HATED them, they were so ugly! I guess I've just become used to them now. I used to think they were bad luck. Not so keen on the white shorts either.

For a decent view of the Centenary jumper you speak of, there is a vid of the game in the thread i'm posting links to the games in. :p

I think we wore that pre-season one with the Opera house and the pin stripes in 1996 as well.

Have to go with the red V, although i don't own one from the early Sydney ddays/Sth Melbourne era i have one of the heritage ones from 2005.

I for one would welcome a return to the red V on a more consistant basis.

I agree we should wear the heritage jumper in Melbourne games

White jumper, red V, and please , no hooped socks, they tried to introduce them when I was a junior at Sth Melb Dist, they where donated to us from South(Lakeside oval across the road), nearly every player played with them rolled down around our ankles, they only lasted a year then, but they just seem to keep coming back!..:thumbsd:

I LOVE THE STRIPE SOCKS they are wicked i love it when the plays have them pulled up they look awesome on Beanie (Jake Orreal) Goodes and Leo look awesome with them 2

Solid red seems stronger to me, hoops give the impression of little girls skipping or similar, sorry Soph, but Im not a fan of them, but hey, thats just my opinion!

Im with you, loving the white with the red V. Would love to see the club wear this jumper for games in Victoria, would be a great way of continuing to recognise the history of our club and the people who have supported the club since the South Melbourne days. :thumbsu:

Good suggestion bedford. The red V with SMFC on reverse brings a tear to the eye. This would be the perfect scenario for Melb games. Just add #35, my all time favourite player and the strip is perfect.

South wore the hoops BB, must agree with Soph

They changed to all red, early to mid 70's, before that, they wore hoops, but better ones, they were 'thicker' red at the top(similar to geelong now) didnt look so bad, I remember well, still have a pair tucked away somewhere with my South stuff, these new ones are like girls stockings, sorry mate, but not to my taste!..:thumbsu:

ps, wheels wore both hooped and all red!..;)

edit. might be wrong on the wheels thing, it was a long time ago!

I,still have 2 of the old Swans jumpers from the pre- Afl days, that i used to wear all the time in the old days when i lived in Sydney. Their both Sekem brand
knitted shirts. One is short sleeved, with a red collar the back is white ,with a red
band at the top. On the front there is a big red v,and a small embroidered opera
house logo at the bottom of the v.The sleeves have red piping, leading to a red
v down the side seams. On the front right is a big embroidered VFL logo.
The long sleeve version is pretty much the same, except that there is no red
sideseam, and the cuffs are red. Wore the long sleeve one last year at the
Essendon game at the SCG and got a few comments from our fans.
Sorry, if this was a boring reply, but i thought it was pertinent to this great
post.

Well......this is a discussion they won't be having over at the Collingwood board.

Yep, love the striped socks. Something very mod-Gwen Stefani about them! Also like the opera house jumper the best.

Any chance of you blokes wearing the white backed jumper against the lions?

This One Or the Red V

Am I the only who see's the clash with the current strip? because the AFL obviously dont.

Can't say I've ever had a problem distinguishing the players. They're 2 very different designs and colours.
